But that doesn't mean I'm willing to be yours!
MIL calls and says a guy knocked on her door. Lost his house in a fire and wants to buy my camper. I call my older friend who helped with my car. He knows campers too. I told him "give me wisdom I don't want to do something stupid." He offers to meet me there. I had already talked to him earlier today, we were going to plan a time to meet there to see what shape the camper is in anyway. I need to do something about it but just because something is easy doesn't make it best.
The camper is in worse shape than I anticipated but nowhere near as bad as the guy tried to imply. My friend gave me a high and low #.
Dude offered me a whopping $2,000 Don't let the door hit you! I didn't need my friend to tell me that would not be in my favor! Friend says I'd set it on fire before I'd sell that low! But if you decide to sell it for $2,000 I'll buy it! LOL
Yeah I'm doubtful as to the guy's story. And of course he tried playing on my sympathy. And of course no renters insurance. He knew from jump street he wasn't offering any more than $2,000. Don't waste my time.

I don't blame you for not wanting to sell it for $2,000

I've heard that story before. My parents had a couple approach them because they had "just lost everything." They were wondering if the camper was for sale. My parents gave it to them. Three weeks later we saw it for sale on the side of the road. Yeah, it was a scam.

Good for you! Unfortunately the "we are down on our luck" stories are more and more often, just that...stories.

low ballers make me laugh because the brass ones on them! I would not be able to keep a straight face if someone offered me that. I would just start laughing in disbelief and then kindly tell them no.

I could have spun my own tale for them but I've learned no is a complete answer. I will take a big loss on it but I refuse to take that big of a loss.

I am so glad you are surrounded by so many wonderful people who jump at the chance to support you. Thanks. It is so true. I was thinking about that today. I can't think of anything I might need advice for that I don't have somebody willing to help. I am so blessed.

Good for you for getting the info you needed before you talked to the guy. Nope. I will only sell it for X amount. The end.

Be prepared. As soon as people (mostly men) find out that you're not only "single" but recently widowed (they assume a big life insurance policy), they'll go in for the jugular. My dad died 7 years ago, and this guy started turning up at my mom's house (my mom lives out in the country alone). Instead of telling him to piss off, she tried to be polite which was a big mistake. One day he made her nervous and she locked the doors and she heard him trying to open the doors to come in!! I don't know how she finally ditched him, I got the impression he was trying to be a suitor but really wanted to rake my mom over the coals.

Be careful, it just doesn't magically "disappear" one day. Trailers, fifth wheels, are great targets in my area, towed out into boonies for meth labs.

People that prey on widows are the worst of the worst on the scumbag scale.
You might want to let your local police department know that there's a man trying to scam people with a down on his luck story and was trying to pressure you into selling your property at a loss. They like to keep their eyes on people like this.
My grandfather was a retired mechanic and had a shop full of amazing tools as well as a shed full of radio equipment. So many people tried to scam my grandmother out of her tools, etc. by low balling offers and making her worry by pointing out that stuff could "just go missing" or "get lost in a fire"--wink, wink, nudge, nudge. Thankfully the local police kept a good eye on her and her property.
I am so sorry you're having to deal with this on top of everything else right now. I am happy that you do have so many people watching your back and advising you.

Was this guy coming around because he knew your circumstances or just because he saw the camper?
We've had a number of people just randomly knock on our door to ask if the RV is for sale. Funny, we've never had a for sale sign on it, yet it keeps happening. Best are the "Travelers" that also want to do your driveway because they are doing other driveways in the area. And that's funny too because, well, there aren't many driveways that near us because there are not many houses here. So, when I tell them we don't want our driveway redone, they ask about buying the RV. I had the same guy come and have the same conversation with me two years in a row!

I too would worry about scammers reading a recent obituary and trying to find the family to scam. I'm glad you didn't take the bait! I hate how much personal information is readily available online even if all you know someone's full name and general location.

Thanks girls. I have a friend on the police force. He'll get it too, his wife is the "commandant" of our church camping club. I'll call him in the morning and ask if the PD is interested in a potential scammer. I have the guy's first name and phone number.

I need to ask mil if she told him about dh. Because when we were alone in the camper he said he was sorry for my loss. It did take me aback because I couldn't see her volunteering that information to a stranger.
