My dh has a hernia that has been bothering him for years. He finally agreed to go to the doctor--at last. I am not sure whether to go to a gastrointologist or general practice doc. He never goes to the doctor , so we have neither one. I know he will need surgery, but I am not sure which one to call first. Thanks for any suggestions carol

If your insurance allows you to go to a "specialist" without a referral, I'd make an appointment with a general surgeon. If it needs repair, and it sounds like it does, a surgeon would be the one to see.

my BF went to his general doctor who said 'yup, it's bad enough you should do something about it' and then gave him the referral to the specialist...
His was getting worse, and we were going on vacation later in the summer- I told him I did NOT want him to have emergency surgery because he over-exerted himself hiking while we were on vacation; I tried to appeal to his more practical, money-saving nature, lol! He finally had surgery for it, so I guess it worked.
ETA: since neither of you have a doctor you regularly see, you might start there first, too, because he'll probably need a physical (ekg, etc. and maybe some blood work) once it's determined that he will need surgery. That way you'll already have a doctor lined up who can do that part of things.

General surgeon or surgoein who specializes in hernia repairs ^^ This, You may wish to start with your primary care physician, they should be able to recommend someone in your area that they know of that does these kinds of surgeries regularly. My BF had his hernia repaired with kevlar mesh a few years back. Good luck to you! (and your husband, but if you have to take care of him, you'll need the luck )

...my BF had his repaired with Kevlar mesh, too... so now whenever we see those commercials about the bladder sling / mesh erosion class action lawsuits, he asks 'I wonder if mine is okay?' (he's a bit of a drama queen, lol!)

(he's a bit of a drama queen, lol!) Unfortunately, my BF's mesh/hernia is not okay, but I can't get him to go back to the surgeon to have it looked at. Either the mesh wasn't big enough and he still has a hernia or the mesh attached in a bad way and scar tissue is pulling/too tight down there. Ya'd think anything "down there" would cause an immediate trip to the doctor, but who knows how men think sometimes :/

One would see a surgeon for a hernia. That said, in this situation, also seeing an internist or family practitioner would also be advised. He has had no healthcare in years. If he is of a certain age, he will need other testing prior to surgery such as an EKG. The man needs a physical.

Thanks so much, he actually did see a gp last year, when his psoriasis was bothering him and he told me that he was going to ask him about the hernia. When he came out I asked about it. His responses -- I forgot to tell him. From then on I go in with him. He went to the dermatologist for his psoriasis and could not believe that drugs actually do work. Totally improved his skin. So now he wil move on to his hernia.

A general surgeon takes care of it. If you don't need referrals, book the appointment with the general surgeon - a g.p. will just refer you there anyway.

Dh went to his regular physician first, and then his doctor recommended a surgeon. We are not required to have a referral with our insurance, but we'd rather have somewhere to start from in choosing one, kwim?
