Okay, this is silly but is your bone folder made of real bone? I lost my favorite bone folder (white plastic) and went on-line to order another one. As I was reading the comments (who knew people could get so passionate about bone folders?) I saw several people state their disappointment that when the folder arrived, it was plastic, not bone. Uh, really?

Yes, really. I have a bunch of them and most are real bone. They are SO much nicer than the plastic ones because the real ones are smoother and seem harder which makes a difference when you are scoring or working with heavier papers.

I have no idea. It's from stampin up and 10+ years old. Just looked at their website and it doesn't say what it's made of other than "sanded smooth and polished", but since the description includes "bone", I'm assuming it's real bone?
I use that thing all the time.

I'm assuming mine is plastic or resin since it's Martha Stewart and about 8 years old. What kind of bone would it be made out of? I just figured that's what it was called originally years ago when it was invented and was made of bone, but that today it was made of a cheaper (and less creepy) alternative.

Where do they get these bones? Horrified. I had no idea and still wish I didn't know, ack! Vegan here and animal lover I have a plastic one and it works fine. Apparently scrapping products and finsihed layouts need to state, "No animals were harmed in the making of this scrapbook product / layout"

I'm pretty sure it is hard plastic or some other man-made substance.

I'm not sure. It's a really old Making Memories and I would hate to lose it. It does a much better job than the newer ones I've tried. It doesn't tear the paper and is super smooth.

From Wikipedia, so take it for what it's worth:
A bone folder or bonefolder is a dull edged handtool used to fold and crease material in crafts such as bookbinding, cardmaking, origami, and other papercrafts where a sharp crease or fold is needed.
Often made from the leg bone of a cow, deer, or similar animal,[5] there are also synthetic alternatives made from plastics. However those made from bone may be less prone to leaving residues on the workpiece.[6] In Japanese bookbinding the equivalent folding tool is traditionally made from bamboo, although a Japanese fabric marking tool ("hera") or Western bone folder may be substituted.[7]
The bone folder is also used for marking fabric where a temporary mark needs to be made without damaging the material
I did not imagine the older ones were made of real bone. I have both kinds. I definitely like my older one better, it is more gentle on the paper.

I have a bone and had a Martha Stewart plastic one. The plastic one has gotten lost, but there is no search and rescue going on. In comparison to my real bone folder, it su-u-u-cked comparatively. but go with what you're comfortable with

All I know is they really do work better than the plastic ones. Sorry.

I have one I bought a gazillion years ago. I don't know if it is real bone but it is always cool in my hand. It works so much better than a plastic one.

Mine came with a Martha Stewart scoring thingy. I'm assuming it's plastic because that's what it feels like.

I have an old one that could be bone. And a pink EK Success one that I'm sure is resin/plastic. Then the ones that came with my score boards and the WRMK envelope maker. OK, I think I have too many.

I don't think I own any that are real bone. I'm sure my MS ones are plastic and my favorite one is the teflon one from Ellen Hutson.

I picked up the really big MS one. It's great for making bigger sized envelopes when needed.

Well, I ordered two and they arrived this weekend. One I knew was going to be white plastic/resin because it was a replacement for one I've used/lost. The other one I ordered stated that it was real bone. It kind of skeeved me out a little but once I used it, I don't think I'll go back to plastic/resin. It's heavier and smoother than the plastic/resin one and seems to glide along the paper better. The story I'm telling myself: The cow or deer that this came from lived a long and happy life and died of old age, after first putting in his/her will that he/she would like to be remembered fondly in the scrapbooking world!

Mine is made of wood, but I can't remember actually buying it so it might have been a tool from my ceramics classes back in the day...
