So my little guy is going to Kindergarten in September - full days. I have been a sahm since 11/2004! and I am ready to go back to work. I get myself all psyched up about it and then I lose my self esteem. My DH works out of state and leaves about 8:15 am and gets home between 7:30 & 8:00 pm. I will only be able to work mother's hours or a possibly Saturday or Sunday here or there.
Any other SAHM's going back to work? What is your plan?
Or if you were a SAHM but when back to work when the youngest entered school, what did you go back to work doing?
Thanks!

I've only been a SAHM/WAHM (I have an online/Etsy business) since 2011 but I applied for the school secretary position at the elementary school (youngest ds will be in the pre-k program there). I wasn't really planning to get a job but this position opened up so I applied, we'll see what happens. I only applied because the hours/location are perfect, dh travels a lot and we live in the middle of nowhere so I'm limited on location and hours.

I was a SAHM for 23 years. Once all three of my boys were in college I went back to work. I have a retail job (I work in a Wegmans grocery store, if you are familiar with that chain). I work weekdays, mornings and early afternoons only. I have weekends off -- unless my department manager really needs me, but I always know well in advance if I'm going to be scheduled to work on a weekend. I love my job! I work in the dairy department.

When My Youngest hit Kindergarten I started subbing in my school district. I loved it because it was school hours and flexible. Then last year my youngest was in 6th grade and I got an aid job at her elementary. Not as flexible but part time. This year an opportunity opened up that I had to take. It's full time but still at school. I am now a elementary school librarian. With her being in Jr High now I'm ready to take the step of going into full time and this is my dream job! Tina

OP, have you thought about being a lunch lady? That's one of the jobs that I was looking into when I decided to go to work last year.

Me, but I'm self employed so I work when I want to. I worked part time from the time DD was born up until about a year ago (had great PT in home child care but she needed a FT job), and then all the chasing around with preschool and no childcare made things difficult so I've kind of been on hiatus since then.
I've also been doing some of the bookkeeping for DH's business, and that will probably ramp up too once I can take over doing more of it without a thousand interruptions. I'm looking forward to having a little more structure in my life again, I kind of feel like I've been drifting for the past year!

I was a SAHM from 1996-2006. When my daughter was in 5th grade I started subbing. I've been doing that for the past 8 years (part time) and LOVED the flexibility!! Now I'm heading back full time...teaching kindergarten!

Is afterschool care or day care not an option?
You probably won't find many jobs that will support only working during the school day and an occasional weekend day here or there.
I'm going back to work in a few weeks after staying at home for 4. Our youngest isn't in school yet (I was originally planning on waiting for that but couldn't wait another 2 years for a variety of reasons). I'm going to really really hate missing out on stuff, but I am excited about my job.

My youngest (twins) are starting kindergarten this year too! I've been teaching piano lessons from home and accompanying for a non-profit children's chorus (paid position) since before they were born. But since they're going to school full time, I started looking for more work to supplement that - things I could do while they're gone. I found a contract position on craigslist doing writing/editing/resumes that is so far turning out to be great. (I did as much research as I could beforehand to make sure it wasn't a scam. Once I got a check, I decided it was definitely legit ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/Q_m8lDOvc_3Le3r1GKdf.jpg) .)I can work at home and accept or reject jobs on my own schedule. I have occasional skype trainings and meetings with the boss. It's been a bit rough getting started with the kids still being home, but I think it'll be really nice once they're back in school.

Teaching preschool might be a good fit - lots of our teachers are mommies with school age kids. You might have to work out morning arrangements, but should be able to be at the bus stop every afternoon.

I started back to work last year. My DS is starting 6th grade and I really wanted something where I could take and pick him up from school daily and no weekends. I am a CPA and public accounting doesn't fit well with that schedule. However, the small school district near me needed a business manager. It has worked out beautifully! We transferred DS to the same school and he loves it!

OP, have you thought about being a lunch lady? That's one of the jobs that I was looking into when I decided to go to work last year. My MIL was a lunch lady for years. She just followed my husband from school to school so she always worked the same days he was in school. There are also some days lunch isn't served so she had a few more off.

I am just switching from working mom to SAHM. My boys are 19 and 21 so it is officially retirement, but I like the idea of being a SAHM, it sounds younger. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg) I loved the teaching schedule. My poor boys had to go to school with me 90 minutes before school started and often stayed 90 minutes after school got out, but they seemed to find friends to hang out with and had quiet time to get their homework done. Is there an opening for something you could do at the school?

School districts are awesome if you don't need full time. The biggest bonus is that you don't have to find daycare next summer to continue to work.
Subbing, para, or office in a school would be ideal

I used to work for a bank. the tellers had flexible hours. At the bank I worked for, the tellers were not full time, and so they didn't work a full day. They were closed Sundays, and rotated Saturdays!

I did hair so It was easy for me to go back after staying home with my 2 oldest ones until the oldest was 2 and son was 9 months. I went back to work because the ex was an ass hole. then when we split I continued to work. I worked right up until I had youngest daughter then I was in the hospital for a week before I had her and she was so early that I had to go back for my 2 weeks when I gave notice I was quitting because I didn't want to be an ass. I stayed home with her until she was almost a year I got the best job I ever had doing hair and it was Friday Saturday and Sunday. Her dad could watch her on Saturday and Sunday and my neighbor watched her on Friday. I did that schedule until she was about 2 and I was living on my own and had to go back to work. Then husband and I got together when she was almost 3. I worked for a while after that but hated her being in day care. A friend was opening a salon in a small town she said I could bring daughter to work with me so I took her up on the opportunity. I did that until she was 5 and then I stayed home with her until she was in the 7th grade. I went back to work because I wanted to. I started grooming dogs and worked from 8 to when ever I got done usually before she got out of school.
When she was in the 8th grade I changed jobs and started working for Petsmart working the hours that everybody hated but we had to rotate the sucky hours with the good hours so it was fair for everybody. I ended up quitting there in 2008 and have been home since. I needed to deal with my home being sick and get her the medical help she needed and I was going from The Portland Area to home for a few months and then finally I got her moved down here after a long 3 1/2 weeks in the hospital. I worked a few months in 2011 but I got injured and while I was recovering I got fired. I know not legal but it happened. It wasn't worth the fight. I have been home since.

It's almost time for me to go back to work and I'm so excited! I started my own wedding photography business in 1990 when DS was a 1 year old because it was a perfect fit. Before DS's birth I'd spent 4 years working in a studio in McLean, Va. learning the business inside and out. Doing weddings I shot Saturdays while ex-DH watched DS, and I was home with him all week doing all of the other work-sorting negs (yes this was back in the film days) sending them off to the labs for prints, making proof albums, making wedding albums. When DS was diagnosed with ADHD in 5th grade and after a disastrous year of school in which he hated school with a passion I pulled him out and homeschooled him from 6th grade through 12th, putting my business on hold. Next came 10 years of battling a severe case of depression called, "treatment resistant depression". I finally hit remission and have been feeling 100% better for the last 18 months. But I couldn't figure out what to do with my life. DS graduated from college in December. The photography world for professionals has changed 100%. I went to a lecture at my old school of photography and the man speaking spoke a lot about commercial photography being very lucrative. I seriously thought about that for over a year, making plans, writing down what equipment I would need and being really discouraged because I couldn't see a way to even get started finacially without borrowing money-and that is something DH doesn't like to do-at all. Just recently, within the last three days it hit me-I'm going to go back to wedding photography. It's what I love and what I know. I was always so happy spending the day with families on one of the happiest days of their lives. I was always praised for my work, how I got along with folks, got them to do what I needed them to do and yet they still had fun. I don't care if I have to compete with all of the newbie photographers out there who are practically giving their work away for free. There is room for Walmart and Whole Foods in the marketplace. I'll just be the Whole Foods ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg) Wedding photography also means less gear than commercial photography. It's a win-win. I've got a lot of planning and research to do before I "put out my shingle", but I'm psyched! Debbie in MD.
