Please PLEASE everyone with little ones take a minute to review car seat safety (maybe a Pea with a reputable source could help with a link? I don't have kids so I'm not up on the recommendations). My sister and mom were recently in a bad accident with my 19 month old niece in the back seat. Thank goodness my sister is a safety nut, my niece is still rear facing and was buckled in properly. Apparently it's so common for incorrect car seat use that the police officer who arrived on scene thanked my sister because he too often has to see kids that weren't properly restrained and aren't always ok like my niece was. Everyone was alright, thank goodness. My niece didn't have a scratch on her and showed no signs of any injury. My mom and sister were banged up and bruised, but nothing serious or lasting. My son and daughter are sticklers for car seat safety too. So glad your niece is okay! Hope your mom and sister heal quickly.

So glad they are okay. Yes - such a true point about car seat safety. When I was pregnant with my youngest I went to the local pd to have it set properly in my car. This is a service that they did free, not sure if they still do this. The police officer told me the same thing and the % he said was like 75% of people do not have their car seats installed properly or use them in the right way. I had a scrapbook acquaintance/friend that was a nurse and her dh was a doctor. I was appalled how loosely they had their son strapped into his car seat. I also have a neighbor takes safety precautions so lightly, I guess in all aspects. I cringe when I see how she has her kids in her car and she is not a slow driver.

It bothers me that people in this country are so afraid to keep their four and five-year-old harness ( are there two or three-year-old rear facing) and so quickly to move them into a booster seat that provides a lot less protection for their little bodies. Car seat safety is one area that Europe consistently wins.

Here is a nice picture guide on how to secure a child in a seat, how long to use which one, etc as well as a few links at the bottom of the post for further info.

Thank goodness your niece was harnessed correctly. You can never take child safety too seriously. You just never know when something will happen. Thank you for the reminder! Hope your Mom and sister are better soon.

I'm so glad they are fine!
My husband calls me the car seat police. When we had our child a friend suggested I look for help finding a great convertible seat on "car seats for the littles" on Facebook. Those ladies are bright, and many trained in the industry. I recommend them to everyone and love following them!
I learned my car brand has latch, but has never tested it for crashes in the center! Our car manual only pointed out the latches and not to share a hook with two car seats - never to not latch in the center. I was so horrified when I found out my seat was installed incorrectly - but thankful for the women on the site that guided me to that!

Wow, that's some photo! Glad everyone is all right. I remember (back in the Dark Ages when we turned our kids facing forward way sooner than you all do today) after I turned my ds I stopped by one of those car seat safety checks. Our fire department was doing it in the hospital parking lot. My dh, who's stronger than I am, had manhandled that seat in as tight as he could. Yet the fireman pulled the strap a certain way and was able to get it in MUCH tighter. omg. After that we never took it out (we used to switch it back and forth between our two cars). Instead we bought a second one and had that one installed in dh's car by a fire fighter also, so it was done correctly from the very beginning. Did the same when dd came along.

I often fight with my family over car seat safety (the adults mind you, not the kids) and it frustrates me to no end. NO, my child's safety is NOT up for debate. Call me all the names you want to.
