Well I did it. I finally went to my brother's boat for the weekend. We stayed at the marina Floatel (floating hotel) but hung out on the boat in the slip, and went for a sunset cruise. I don't do boats well - I was in a speed boat when I was 3, and the guy driving wouldn't slow down, no matter how much the crying 3 year old begged him. And then we hit a sailboat wake and were barely touching the water. So speed & boats aren't my thing. But my brother's boat is a 38 ft, sleeps 8, not a speed boat. So I was a bit more comfortable on that! We had a lovely 2 hour ride out to into Georgian Bay to watch the sun set. A friend of my brother's who grew up near the marina was our captain. Barely needed the sonar to get us home in the dark - once he knew what marker to look for, we were off. Now, I didn't sit on the front of the boat like my crazy family, but I did sit up beside the captain to watch the sights! This is my brother looking back to give me the thumbs up and make sure I'm ok....LOL (and my hubby & girls sitting up front!):

I'm glad you went and had a good time. I wonder if your adventure will inspire a new cake. Ha! It kind of did! I'm working for my friend today....but when I get home I'll share a photo. It was my brother's birthday on the 23rd, so I brought cake. His boat is called "Naughty Tailgate" and I had my niece send me a photo of the name, and I put that on top....

Good for you! It makes me sad that you had such a traumatic experience as a child-being on the water in any kind of boat is a happy place for me and it such a shame that you were denied that joy.
Will you do it again? Or was it enough to conquer the fear?

Will you do it again? Or was it enough to conquer the fear? Oh for sure! I was not really fearful of this boat - I knew it was not going anywhere near 100 miles an hour - I think he said top speed is maybe 70. And even then it is a big boat so a fairly smooth ride. But my nephew's 4 seater Sea-doo boat? Not a chance in hell....LOL

I'm glad you survived it ok. And now that you've done it, you don't have to go again if you don't want to. I grew up around boats so have no fears about them but plenty of fears about other things. You probably hadn't heard yet of the 2 teens missing since Friday off the Atlantic in a capsized boat or you might have requested being returned to land immediately!

I'm so glad you gave it a try and it worked out well for you. I have a funny about DH and boats.
My DH had a traumatic event involving a near drowning happen when he was a small child; as a result, he never learned to swim and fears being on the water. He decided that he could handle a cruise ship, so we started cruising. As we got ready for our second cruise, he got really brave and decided that he could handle being on a chartered rum runner sailboat. I made sure he saw lots of photos of the boat before I booked the charter, so I knew he was aware of what we were going on.
We arrived at the marina to get on the boat and I realized that we were going to have to take an inflatable out to the boat since it wasn't docked in the marina. I didn't tell DH about the raft, just that the captain was on the way to pick us up. When the captain arrived in the raft, DH looked accusingly at me and said, "It looked bigger in the pictures." LOL He hesitated for a moment, but the captain assured him the trip in the raft would be short (we could see our boat from the dock). We made it out to the boat and DH had a wonderful time. Turns out the crew were Jimmy Buffett fans and they and DH had a great time visiting while the kids and I snorkeled and swam.
At DH's request, we chartered the boat again on our next cruise to that island.

Your brother looking out for you.... Yep - my baby brother is an absolute shit disturber - he's my goofy Dad through and through. But he does look out for me!
