I got an email today from a really cool local museum we belong to. The title:
Science Happy Hour presents: Bed Bugs - A Modern Plague.
Sounds like something Bernadette might attend on BBT.

for those of you going, but that sounds interesting!
Join us as science writer Brooke Borel takes us through the creepy and fascinating world of the bed bug!
From the bed bug’s origin in bat caves around 245,000 years ago, to its obliteration by DDT after World War II and its comeback over the past fifteen years, the history of the bed bug is long and prosperous! You may feel itchy after this talk, but you’ll also leave with an appreciation for this hardy pest’s tenacity, as well as astonishment at its incredible story of biology and evolution.

My eight year old nephew would love to go to that. He loves critters.

Actually, I would watch the presentation. It might make me feel a bit itchy and squirmy, but I would be interested.

I took a bed bug class for work.
Ewwwww. Gross but interesting.
I can safely say I know way more about them than I wanted to.
I found it most scary that a some stages they can live without feeding for more than a year. ( approx 400 days!)
Some sprays can kill them but it's difficult to be sure.
Sustained heat of more than 118 degrees F for more than 90 minutes will kill them. Most exterminators here like an 8 hour day. They bring the equipment in, set it up, bring the place up to temp for the 90 mins to 2 hours, cool it, inspect it, and do it again for good measure.
BUT you have to do this to the infected area and the surrounding areas or they might migrate.
Scary stuff. And they were nearly eradicated for years then we stopped using DDT and slowly they've developed tolerances to other chemicals.

I'm still horrified over the bedbugs in the theater that was mentioned on the theater thread the other day. That never occurred to me and now I don't want to go there. That was me. Lol If you really want to scare yourself Google where bed bugs have been found its a scary list. The stuff of nightmares.
