DD's bf is a college student moving into his first apt and just learning to cook. His family does not cook at all....so we have been helping him learn a few basics this summer. I want to make him a list of things he'll want to stock his kitchen with so he feed himself! He'll be starting from nothing...... Wanna help me compile a list of basics? and some easy meal ideas?

Editing my post..I didn't read it properly.
I originally suggested a dutch oven and a metal colander..missing the college bf part. Lol
I'd go with a rice cooker/veggie steamer and a 5 ingredient or less cook book.

Decent frying pans and sauce pans. If you look around, you can find casserole, baking dishes and/or a roasting pan at rummage sales or thrift stores.
ETA: I didn't realize how important decent pots and pans were until I tried to make scrambled eggs at my cousin's house. Her fry pan was thin and cheap and the eggs stuck to the sides and bottom and browned the eggs. If he is a new cook, he will be frustrated by this and think he can't do it, when what he really needs is decent tools.

What about a crock pot? Put in a roast, some potatoes, onions, carrots, salt and pepper, and you have a tasty meal (and leftovers) with little effort.

You're getting good suggestions, so I'll add where to shop - when my sons were starting out, we looked for good quality at a good price. We looked at Tuesday Morning and Marshall's for deeply discounted quality fry pans and assorted kitchen equipment. Good luck!

I agree with good knives and good pans..
Everything else can come in time but good foundation would be those...

Great suggestions! Keep 'em coming! His birthday is in Oct....so I'm thinking I'll get him a nice cookware set as an early present when he heads off the end of August. Then I'll give him a list of the other stuff that he can add on his own. I'm thinking I'll also make up a box of spices and essentials for a pantry. He's been real eager to learn how to cook!
