Let's say that you have been on a waiting list for a particular kit club for a couple of months now. Although you have never actually been taken off the wait list, and definitely never received a kit, you decide to cancel. Can you still be charged a cancellation fee?

I would hope not, but also can understand from the company's point of view that they might want to, since the wait list is probably used as a way to determine how many people want to subscribe, so the company can increase their product ordering. If 25 people sign up and they increase all of their paper orders by 25, and then 10 people cancel, suddenly the company is left with kits they expected to sell but now can't.
I'm pretty opposed to cancellation fees (I'll never join a kit club that requires one) but I also understand it from the owners' points of view.

I am still on the waiting list. There is no indication of when I will come off the waiting list… Do I just have to stay on the waiting list indefinitely?

LOL, I have no idea, just explaining why I can see that a company MAY want to charge a cancellation fee. Products are usually ordered/planned many months in advance.

I don't think so. Because you're on the wait list, you never actually started the commitment of getting a kit, so you don't have any commitment to "break."
I'd just say I'm tired of waiting and want off the list.
If you're on a wait list, that means there are lots of others waiting for a spot, so you dropping off the list doesn't mess up any sort of buying on the case of the owner.

I wouldn't even think you'd have to actually remove yourself from the wait list. Normally when your name comes up, they would send an email inviting you to join the club. Until you've actually signed up, given them your credit card, agreed to receive a certain number of kits ... what is there to charge you for?

Unfortunately, they already have my credit card number as I currently subscribe to another one of their kits. I wanted to cancel both, and understand that there would be a cancellation fee for the kit I've been receiving, but never imagined there would be a cancellation fee for the kit that I have never received. The good news is they have decided to "waive" the fee for the kit I'm on the waitlist for. How kind of them… BTW... I have subscribed to the other kit for 6+ years now.

Do I get a prize if I can guess which kit club it is?

How much of a fee did they want to charge for the kit you were on the wait-list? It's pretty crazy to charge a fee for something you weren't even getting.

If you are on a wait list, there is no guarantee of product, there is no commitment on anyone's part - they can punt you at any given time, right? So why would there be a "cancellation" fee to simply get off the list? I would not be doing business with anyone who skewed that any other way.

That is unbelievable.

Wow. If it's who I think it is, they are really scraping if they tried to impose a cancellation policy on a waitlist. Like others have stated, you were waitlisted - there was no commitment on either end. For all you know, you may have never even received one!
Just, wow.

You got charged a cancellation fee on a kit that you've subscribed to for over 6 years? What's the policy on that? Because I think it stinks.

At first I thought, "Wow, that's a bad business move to charge a fee for getting off a waitlist. Either they are hard up for money or just super shifty."
Then I thought, "Well shouldn't it be explained clearly in their FAQ section?"
Then I realized who it was.

I would say that takes "low" to a whole new level. How can they justify charging you a cancellation fee for something you weren't even getting? That is totally insane.

So you don't want the planner kit anymore, huh? I wouldn't either.

Wow. And no, I wouldn't have expected a cancellation fee for getting off a waitlist. How "generous" of them to waive that fee for you.

Same old, same old... we have a local event organiser with some very interesting cancellation fees in place but not even she would get away with this

Oh my. The commitment never started, so that makes no sense. I'm glad you didn't have to pay a cancellation fee! I do think the kit company I am familiar with did this to people back when they started offering PL kits and had a wait list, but I could be remembering incorrectly.

I remember people complaining about SC doing this with the PL kit when it first came out. Some wanted off the wait list but were told there would be a cancellation fee to be removed.

Reason number 503 why I won't do business with them...which kind of sucks because I love Ali Edwards' kits but don't want the SC hassle.

To be fair, they did not end up charging me the $15 fee to cancel the planner kit. But only because I called them on it. It just ticks me off that they acted like they were doing me some big favor.
I do not want to pay the $15 cancellation fee for the scrapbook kit, so I will get one more month and then cancel as soon as I can. But I have to wait until after they charge me for next month's kit before I can cancel.
