I started scrapping 12x12 and then after a while I felt like there was too much space to fill during a single photo layout phase. I switched to 8.5x11 and liked it for a long time. But in the past few years I've started doing more two page layouts and feel limited by the size. I just wondered if any of you have switched sizes more than once and what you preferred.

Yes, I struggle with size committment (my closet says the same thing! haha). I started out 8.5x11.... did that for a good long while... went to 12x12 for several years... then 8.5x11 for about 6 months, now I'm exclusively doing 12x12 again. I do find 12x12 pages quite big sometimes (which was why I switched the first time -- all that SPACE!), and especially so if I have a 12x12 album open. Those things are HUGE. But, I am never quite satisfied with the way my 8.5x11 pages look. Some of my absolute, all-time fave scrappers do this size and their pages are amazing, but it's not something I'm ever quite happy with when I try it.

Yep. I started 12 x 12, then I scrapped 8.5 x 11 exclusively for years because it fit my style which was clean and graphic (this was back circa 2004-2008ish) then I took quite a long break from scrapping and I came back as a 12x12 scrapper again. I like both sizes, but not 8.5 x 11 seems a bit too small, plus I no longer have any 8.5x11 paper protectors lol.

When I started scrapbooking, I did 8.5 x 11. Then I made the switch to 12 x 12 at some point - maybe a year or so in? I mostly did 12 x 12 until about a year and a half to 2 years ago. I then started doing mostly 8.5 x 11. I tried it and liked it and then kind of made a conscious switch- mainly b/c it is so much easier to store albums. Then I missed 12 x 12 so now I do a mix of both. I probably am about 1/2 and 1/2. It basically now just depends on my mood as to which size I do.

I switched from 12x12 to 9x9 to 8x8 and now am at 8 1/2 x 11 exclusively. LOVE it, and I don't see myself changing. I have been doing this for 3 years or so now.

When I started scrapping, both sizes were readily available and the 8.5 x 11 was the more popular size. But that changed pretty quickly and everyone went 12x12, so the smaller album became extinct here in Australia - nobody sold them. So it was 12x12 or nothing. lol.
Recently I found a shop here in Australia that sells 8.5 x 11, and I can't wait to order a few and do the smaller size again. Much easier to store on the bookshelf.

I use 12x12 for trips, and 8x11 for family because when I started 11x8 was popular and I want them to continue to be alike. I think the 12x12 are not easy to take somewhere and also hard for kids to hold on their lap but easier to design. I like switching between the sizes, too.

I started 12x12 because I didn't know any better, and have stuck with it since. I do like the look of 8.5x11 but I find it hard to fit everything on the page, especially as I tend to use 6x4 photos. I have previously mixed up sizes in an album, which I like the look of. These days I mix regular layouts with project life pages, so 12x12 works better for that because I love the design A page protectors.

I do all of my specialty albums in 12x12 so I do still get to use that format even though most of my scrapping is 8.5x11.
I have been known to mix it up by putting smaller layouts in my 12x12 album - was it Ali Edwards that started that?
I have to get my pictures printed 2x3 when I use the 8.5x11 for the most part because I fill up albums too quickly with full size pics.
My specialty albums are like son's sports albums and hobby albums, trip to Europe used 2 large 12 x 12 albums, things like that.

I have!
My first album was 12x12" I liked it but I was just starting out (2004) and I didn't have the variety of technique knowledge or embellishments that I do now, and I just felt overwhelmed with so much room on my layouts to fill. I also hadn't learned about making photo enlargements, and was working solely with 4x6" prints straight from the film camera.
Then I started working on 8.5x11" albums. And for the most part, I still do. This era is when I got my digital camera. And when I learned to put two pics on one 4x6 print. And how to make and print enlargements. Lots of 5x7" one pic layouts.
Now I only choose to use 12x12" albums for topics that I know I will need a lot of room for. If I was going on a major vacation, with lots of scenery pics to document everything, this is what I'd use. I'm also using it for my dd's high school album, as I would really like to get all four years in one book. (I use 8.5x11" albums for all other school albums)
I actually really like both of those sizes. I feel like they both have their uses. And I have no problem having both sizes on a shelf together. The size discrepancy wouldn't bother me at all.

The 12x12 size has always intimidated me and why I never made a "traditional" LO until this year when I tried 8.5x11. The size just works with my brain. I've attempted some 12x12 lately and I always end up cutting down to 8.5x11. I figure, if I want lots of photos on a page, I'll do a PL page. My traditional LO's are for me to get creative and tell more of a story.
So, no...at this point no switching for me.

I started with 12 by 12, around 2010 I went through a 8.5 by 11 phase but quickly got tired of it because I couldn't fit everything on the page. I have been a 12 by 12 scrapper since then. I don't like any of the smaller pages I did because when nothing fit the journaling got left out... I did like how the albums were easier to store (when I could find them!)

I do all my childhood pages in 8.5 x 11 but just about everything else in 12 x 12. I chose the smaller format for my childhood because I usually only have one or two photos on a layout. I have included more and done double page spreads where needed.
I enjoy the smaller size but can't imagine doing all my pages in that format.

I started as 12x12, then switched to 8.5x11 for 1 year and now Im switching back to 12x12. It was hard to make the switch back to 12x12 and get my groove but I think I enjoy it more. My DH told me he likes 12x12 better... i said "so size does matter?"

I switched to 12*12 from 8.5*11 when I had kids. I have done 8.5*11 travel and other specialty albums. I am thinking about switching back, however -- I am starting to find the huge albums impossible to store. I have been scrapbooking since the late 1990s and have dozens and dozens of huge albums; it would be a lot easier if they fit in regular bookcases.

I haven't switched, but I scrap both sizes. I don't like too much white space, so if I scrap old photos (which is 2,5 x 2,5), I use 11x8,5 (and sometimes I use that size for other pics too). I mostly make 12x12, but I love how my smaller layouts turn out.

Me. too. I use a lot of 2x3 pics in my 11x8 albums, using photosheet to print them. I use a lot of 5x7 in my 12x12 albums. I store my 12x12 on the top shelf of my book case lying down and in baskets. Attachments:

Thank you all for responding. All of your comments helped me realize it's not unreasonable to switch if I want to. My kids' albums are 8.5x11 and those are the majority of my layouts. We have a family album that's 12x12 but I don't do too many of those. I just find that those layouts come together so easily and I like them more than other sizes. I need to buy new albums so maybe I'll buy 12x12 so I can mix it up whenever I want to.

I use 12x12 albums and will put 8x8, 6x12, 8.5x11 and 12x12 and pocketed pages in them. Depending upon how much space I think I need. I go with an 8x8 if just a snippet of a story but still want a stand-alone page. And 8.5x11 tends to be if it's a multiple page spread - a day outing with several different things or events. 6x12 would be for run-offs of a 12x12 story. Although I seem to always gravitate to the 12x12 for normal layouts and use them the most. I have to remind myself to use the other formats more. Because I get almost giddy when I see various sizes of pages within my albums. (weird, I know!)

I only did one 12x12 album as a gift for my brother and his family and realised if I switched to that for myself I'd have nowhere to put them.

I have done either 8 1/2x11 or A4 size in the past - mostly for travel albums. Now I'm doing PL in 6x8 but miss doing regular layouts so will be going to 9x12 next year for PL so I can also slot in more layouts and just have it all in the same album.

I have also switched back and forth. I now scrap both sizes but I'm on a 8.5x11 kick right now. I just don't like now similar pages are not in the same book.
