So I've been doing the whole scrapping thing for a handful of years now, on and off, and I've never really been happy with the brands of ink I've found. I'm not a very big stamper, only have a few leftover from my old SC PL subscriptions a few years back. The few brands of ink I've used have either been really smeary or just not true to color. What should I be looking for instead? I'm using cling stamps on clear acrylic block and one or two wood-block mounted stamps. Ideally I'd love some colors as well as a true black that would look good on paper as well as on photos. Any recommendations?

Hey Boop...
I'm sure you'll get quite a few differing opinions because ink is like a lot of other things we use...personal preference. The inks I primarily use are dye inks by Stampin' Up!. I don't do any Copic coloring so a a dye ink serves my purpose. You mentioned stamping on photos. A dye ink will smear because it's water based. You would need to use a ink like Stazon which won't smear after it's dried. I haven't had any issues w/ ink pads not being true to color. One reason why I like SU! inks is because the ink matches the cardstock which completely takes out the frustration of it not matching. My favorite black ink is Versafine. Just gives the crispest and best image especially when using it for sentiments. Hope this helps and definitely try stamping again. You'll love it.

I find that the stamp has a lot to do with the quality of the impression I get... Clear stamps can be acrylic or polymer, and one stamps better than the other... Think it's the polymer ones - it's typically the more expensive ones...
I like and get good results with Memento inks with polymer clear stamps, but horrible results if I'm using an acrylic one... To get a good result with an acrylic stamp I'll try StazOn... Sometimes that works better - I guess that it's because StazOn sticks to glossy surfaces and so It sticks better/more evenly to the stamp, but I don't know...
I like Tsukinko inks (they make Memento and others), for most things... I've also had good luck with StazOn and Prima inks... I stamp as part of making LOs so I'm maybe not a true stamper - I like that I can buy the smaller size ink pads from both those brands so that I can have a larger variety of colours...
I find that chalk inks (I have some by Tsukinko that are the Dew Drop kind, and some by Prima), give the most even impression with 'problem' stamps...
Water based dye inks like Distress are my favourite for blending and water colouring and all sorts of uses, but i haven't had much luck using them to stamp with...

You may want to use a mat like a mouse pad or place mat...sometimes a softer surface helps to give a better image. Hobby Lobby or JoAnns may have the stamping mats as well.

A stamp positioner, like Misti or a knock off, may also make you happier with your inks. The ability to restampe in exactly the same place can make your inks much more vivid

I've had good results with Memento and Papertrey Ink dye inks and with Amuse pigment inks when using photopolymer stamps. I agree with penny that the type of stamp makes a big difference- cheap acrylic stamps are unlikely to produce a good image. If I have trouble with 'beading' of inks, I sometimes stamp on my versamark pad first before the coloured dye ink, and that helps give better coverage.
