I'm trying to identify people in old photos and there just a few people left in the family who can identify them. The scary thing is if you ask them to ID people in a photo one day and then show them another photo from the same event another day, you might get different answers.
And why the photos were taken and when (here's where the old days when the month/year was printed on the photo is helpful). There are some anniversary party photos I have and there is one that shows the couple with a huge Happy Anniversary sign in the background. On the back, the wife wrote, "Huge sign made by [niece]," which is a nice extra to know.

The date printed on the front of the photo didn't look great, but man was it convenient. Mine aren't even printed on the back anymore. If they are digital, I can look them up on the computer, but otherwise I have similar issues who who is in the photo.

Costco print the file name on the back (an so do other places). I try to make sure to rename my photos with the date.

My mom is a genealogist and is always after me to write names and dates on the back. She said that far too often, the photos can get separated from albums, where people.may have written that info.
I'm so bad about it, though...I need to get better!

Just remember to use an acid free pen if you are writing on the back of the photo.

I'm the custodian of the family photos. I had the family over for dinner and made my Mom and aunt label all the photos they could. I have a huge stack of unidentified photos. I wish I would've got the box before my grandparents died. :/

I'm so glad I read this post. I have a box of old photos (70 to 80 years old) that I need to label. I've been wanting to sit down with my mom and aunt and go through them and get them labeled. I want to have both mom and Aunt Dot because I figured they could hash out together who is who in the photos. My aunt has been terribly sick and in and out of the hospital for months. Currently she is out and doing pretty good. I better catch her now before anything else happens.
My dad was a stickler for labeling photos. He even made a "scrapbook" of his college years. Very simple but everything was dated and labeled. He passed that habit on to me and I will forever be grateful to him for that!
