I've never seen anything like it, it's like out of a movie. Dozens of birds flying and swooping in circles. They swoop down, they come back up, they circle and do it again. They aren't in unison like a murmuration, just flying around randomly in the same place.

No idea why, but the crows do that in my yard at least once a week. Drives the cats crazy. It is freaky to see.

I'd guess they are eating bugs.

Yeah, I googled and it looks like they're probably eating a swarm of gnats or something. It's very freaky!

Urg our neighborhood has crows. Big nasty noisy beasts. I thought someone was banging on the house no just 20 birds landing on our roof. Then I thought something was digging around in our side yard nope just the crows knocking seed pods onto the ground. They don't seem to stick around for long just twilight. Several neighbors watered and it was running down the street and they were swarming it.
I swear there are at least 50 of these things and some look really mean. They are huge.

I immediately pictured a Disney movie, like Snow White, "whistle while you work" Should I be thinking Hitchcock?

They only stay a day or two when they're migrating. I used to walk my dog in Golden Gate Park, and the first time I ever saw them I was mystified. They were so low and flying like crazy birds. They were on the way to San Juan Capistrano. Now we see them one or two days a year but I don't get freaked. August is a peak migration time for them.

They may have a nest in the area. I have a swallows nest under the eve of the back of my house. The swallows come back every year and raise a few clutches of babies. It takes a whole group to feed them. It's quite a frenzy of activity watching the large group of birds feed a few babies.I am quite surprised at the amount of swallows in the yard this year. It's hard to count them, but there are at least 20.
Last year a sparrow took up residence in the nest while it was briefly empty. These swallows were attacking the sparrow and the sparrow wouldn't give it up. So the swallows made a new nest. When they returned this year they went back to the older one. They are sturdy nests made with mud. I'm waiting for them to leave and then I have to powerwash the nests down. We want to sell our house and the nests have to go.

How odd that I should read this tonight - we were talking yesterday about the crows being much bigger and meaner looking than we usually see in our part of England but then thought we must be imagining things! Must have been a good Winter and Spring for them in the US and UK!
