About a week ago, I started smelling cigarette smoke. All. The. Time.
Here's the thing. No one in my household smokes. No one has smoked in my house in 25 years (allowed it once and swore never again). We've lived in this house since it was built in 1990. I work from home so I'm not smelling a coworker or residual smoke from a building. We haven't brought anything into the house that might have "lived" in a smoking environment. Additionally, the smell continues in my car and outside as well.
NOTHING makes it go away. It is so disgusting and annoying. Dr. Google (where I found the name of the "condition") says it can be anything from simply nothing but a fluke (and will go away on its own eventually) to be happening as a result of a brain tumor or even an indicator of Alzheimers.
Obviously, I'm not going to jump to any irrational conclusions. As its only been a week, I'm going to give it more time before I seek out any professional opinion.
Curious to see if anyone here has experienced this or know of someone who has.

Happens to me all the time. Started a couple years ago after I had my son. The first time I was convinced I was going to have a stroke. I think I ended up having a panic attack because I was so terrified. A few days later and still no stroke, I realized I had a sinus infection. Now, whenever I start smelling smoke and there is no one smoking near me, I ready myself for a sinus infection. Funnily enough, it started for me today...my eyes are burning and it smells like smoke. So, of course I'm getting sick since we're supposed to go on our quick before school starts vacation.

Yes, me. I could smell cigarette smoke, not continuously, but probably daily and it was strong. I had a brain scan. They found nothing . After a lot of tests they decided it was because I used nasal decongestant spray (Sinex) more than I should. I still suffer if I'm in a smoky room for a long time- the effects can last a couple of weeks after exposure.

My sister had phantom smell occurrences, also involving cigarette smoke. Her Dr. told her that it can happen after a viral infection, she had a bad case of chicken pox as an adult, and this happened not long after she had recovered.
My husband still has phantom smell occurrences after a terrible case of shingles about 10 years ago. He notices it if he gets extra tired or physically run down, though not necessarily cigarette smoke, it's usually other things.
I hope yours resolves quickly.

I had no idea! I've been smelling cigarette smoke off and on for years and years. I smell it in my house (at the mall, outside, in my office) every so often, very strong, for days at a time. I go around sniffing to see if the dryer is on fire. Or the kitchen. Or something else.
My family experienced a house fire decades ago and I assumed it was psychological related to that.

There are some strange things in this world. I wonder why cigarette smoke as opposed to other smells? Most of the articles I found talk about this specifically. For the most part the answer is "who knows". There some hypothesis around our brain being trained to certain smells as being "bad".

Holy cow... I have this... especially if I'm exposed to cigarette smoke for a couple of hours. Fourth of July, we were at the fireworks and it was hours of people smoking. I smelled it for the next 3 days. Like I was still standing next to someone smoking. DH thought I was nuts. I said it was making me nuts. I couldn't get rid of the smell in my "head".
I've also had it when I'm sitting at home and it's so strong I can't stand it an I've not been around anyone smoking.
Glad I'm not the only "nut". I always figure it was because my Dad was a heavy smoker when I was a kid. Is it "stuck" in my memory?

Not cigarette smoke, but my grandma wore Tabu perfume and I smell it every so often. I don't even know if they make it anymore. But it's a good memory.

I had a sinus problem a couple years ago and noticed a cigarette smell randomly, and the smell and taste of Sprite completely changed... It went floral and almost a dry bitter sensation when I took a sip... Lasted 6-8 weeks, then Sprite smelled normal again...

Can't blame it on any kind of illness...no colds or sinus infections lately. Who knows...I'll give it some more time.

My husband does that too. But his is related to one of the medications he takes. Don't remember if it's the one for headaches or the one for blood pressure! Hope it goes away soon!

Interesting, I am taking a blood pressure medicine but it's not new. Wonder if it can develop after some time (years).

I have epilepsy & cigarette smoke can be an aura that I'm about to have a seizure or it can be a trigger & give me seizures.

I have this very rarely, too... more like a 'burned' type smell than smoke, but still... I never realized it could be a result of an infection, though. interesting! I hope it goes away soon for you; it's got to be annoying!

I don't smell cigarette smoke, but I'll often smell shit or garbage. I think I was once told it was my sinuses. So, my sinuses are filled with shit and garbage. Soooo gross!

It actually is worse today. I even bought some new vapor rub to put under my nose and that only helped for about a minute. I really am starting to get to where I'm so distracted by it that is really disruptive. So I'm calling the doc in the a.m.
I feel like I've been in smoke fill bar all day minus the irritates eyes.

It only happens in dreams, for me. I've bolted out of bed more than once smelling smoke, convinced there's a fire. Other times it's flowers or perfume. It's weird.
