I watched the first episode of season 6 today. Looks like they have a nice cast of bakers, and now I'm really craving a slice of black forest cake!
I felt really sorry for Dorrit after her mousse didn't set (but I think having an element that needs to 'set' is always going to be risky). I knew that guy was going home, he didn't do very well on any of the bakes. That young girl seems like she has some great skills and I liked there lady in the headscarf too (haven't learnt all their names yet), she did well and she was being so nice when Dorrit was upset. Some of the guys seemed really strong too,
I might give Mary's walnut cake a try at some stage, that looked delicious too.
So what did you think? any early favourites?

I watched it, and it was the first time I have ever seen the show. Those Black Forest gateaux looked sublime. In fact, DS begged me to go to Tesco and buy one. I warned him it wouldn't be anything like as good as the ones on TV, but he didn't care! I loved the show, but think there might be a problem if future shows invoke the same cravings!

Black forest cake was my Dad's absolute favourite, one year my mother and I made him a traditional one for his birthday...it took the two of us the better part of 4 hours. Needless to say we've only had bought ones since.
How come you've never watched it before? Isn't it very popular in Scotland, or you don't like baking shows? I saw one episode by accident on TV here and I've been hooked since, but now I have to use nefarious means to watch as it airs in the UK because I can't wait until the finally decide to show it here.

It's hugely popular pjaye, but until very recently I watched virtually no television. Now I like to sit and colour at night and I usually put on the TV at the same time. GBBO came on last night, and I couldn't be arsed getting up to find the remote! But I'm definitely a convert, and will watch in future.

Excellent! I love baking so I'm thinking of challenging myself to make one thing from each show.

Is anyone watching this in the States? How? Is it available online?
I watched a few episodes on a transatlantic flight recently and would like to see more.

We get it on our PBS station but we're only on season 5. It's the only cooking competition show that I really enjoy. Do they always do it outside? It seems to make it extra difficult to bake under those conditions.

It's my second most favourite programme! I'm so pleased it's back. My niece has set up the game we played last year, where a group of friends/relations are all assigned a baker and the one that is eliminated has to make the technical challenge for the week and post photos of it being made together with the completed cake. Those nearby each player get to taste it too but we are spread out all over the UK. Last year I was out in the first round and had to make the cherry and almond cake. I am Tamal in this series, he looks so accomplished!! My daughter in law is playing this year and has been assigned Nadiya. My DIL lives close by so we will be company for each other and get to taste the creations. See if you can find the follow on programme too, pjaye It's called The Extra Slice and is hosted by Jo Brand. It will be broadcast on Friday at 9.00 pm on BBC2 I believe. It's fun too! Had I had enough eggs I would have made the madeira cake today. Hopefully I can do one at the weekend.

My DD and I caught it this morning on BBC iplayer as we were out last night. Suffice to say my DD12 commentary consisted of hmmm, nice, ohh, lovely, followed by "we have to stop watching this, it's making me hungry"!! She correctly guessed which contestant would leave. Looking forward to the rest of the series, I love the looks of their faces while Mary and Paul taste their efforts. As usual the contestants seem very nice and drama free. Felt so sorry for Dorret. These efforts won't get their makers an invite to take part.... www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-33785354

I saw the previous season but forgot it was coming back so I've not set my DVR. I like that it is drama-free, and in nearly every episode they make desserts I've never even heard of. And yes, why do they bake outside, I wonder? It sure adds to the challenge, like the humidity, etc has affected the end product on several episodes. It's a lovely setting, but it is curious to me. And the judges are GREAT...such a fun show.

Maybe my local channel isn't showing it again.

I LOVE this show!! My DH and I crack up every time Mary says "layers", which is funny in itself as DH is British.

I watched it last night with my daughter - we love baking! I have a craving for Madeira cake but not Black Forest....ick! Not a fan of it unfortunately. There's a new book out so I succumbed and bought it so will be 'playing along' at points during the series!

Aha, this explains how you are watching the same episodes as are showing in the UK! It is on Foxtel here. I think they showed Season 5 earlier this year but now they are doing older seasons and revisits.

It's also on free to air here, I can't remember which channel 7two maybe?, but I don't think it was that far behind the UK screening...maybe a few weeks.

The last time I did something "nefarious" I got a letter from someone through my ISP telling me that if I did it again I would be taken to court or fined - it scared me "straight"!!

Sorry for BBTing an old thread, but..... pjaye, I just came across something on my FB feed that might interest you. The Great Australian Bake Off starts on 13th October on Foxtel / Lifestyle Food channel. Matt Moran and Maggie Beer are the hosts. I adore Maggie Beer, and I think she'll be perfect for this show.

Thanks! I'll have to keep my nefarious sources on alert for that when it starts...I saw some ads on TV about 6 months ago and then it all went quiet and I thought it might have been cancelled. Looking forward to this version and I agree that Moran & Beer seem like a better fit for this show. The last Aussie version the judges and the hosts were all wrong.
Now that the thread has been resurrected, who is still watching? I've been watching 'an extra slice" as well and that's fun, I love the home bakes people send in. I don't really have a favourite...they all seem like nice people.

I'm still watching every week. I have no favourite either, I think the right people are going each week. But they are all so nice about it, they all comment that it is/was one of the best things they have ever done.
I admire their ability to produce something they usually have never heard of or seen before from very scant instructions, I still use recipes for things I make all the time.
I love that they help each other. I guess I just like the niceness of the series, I dislike progammes that encourage chest thumping, finger pointing, loud shouting at each other etc. Those programmes are just so unpleasant to watch.

We just started Season 2 of the GBBO in the US. They are renumbering and reordering them, so the US Season 1 = UK Series 5 and US Season 2 = UK Series 4. Our PBS stations runs them on Sundays at 7, so episode 3 is on tonight. I'd love to see the Australian version one day .

I've seen every season of GBBO and one season Of GABO. LOVE this show! I have an android box so I can watch tv shows from anywhere in the world basically. It's so fun and I love UK TV. My favourite this season is Ian. He is so creative with his flavours and he also happens to live in the same town as one of my BFF's from high school so I like to cheer for him. I do also like Flora and Paul. For a corrections warden, Paul sure does have a soft side. His Lion Bread was outstanding! I was sad to see Mat go. He was also a fave. I think Nadyia may go sooner than later and Flora needs to up her game. I dare say that I think the final two will be Ian and Tamal. I liked everyone this season though.

That's what I mean...as soon as I started to list the favourites, I realised everyone was on the list for different reasons. I think Paul is the most adventurous, and Nadiya is always so nice to everyone and Tamal seems quite humble...and so it goes on! The only one I didn't really warm to was Dorrett, mainly because I thought it was a bit disrespectful not to practice her bread bake before the show. I'm sure they have lots of people who audition and she just seemed to waste her opportunity.
A friend and I have been having a weekly bake-off event, we get together and watch the show and take it in turns to make something from that episode for the next week. I've made madeira cake, Alvin's soda bread and a sponge roll (I don't have an ice-cream maker, so I used one of Mary's recipes and made a Bûche de Noël instead) My friend made biscotti, crème caramel and is making frangipane tart this week. It's fun, but not helping the waistline much!

That does sound fun Pjaye!!! It sounds brilliant. I didn't warm to Dorrett either. She was strange to me. I also didn't care for Ugne. I thought she was trying too hard (if that makes sense) with flavour combinations and she really couldn't ever follow through and finish up. I think she was a bit out of her league or like I said, trying flavours that she'd never used before.
