I need a new lamp for my crafting table. At night the room is relatively dim due to the fact that we have these crappy energy saving light bulbs put into the ceiling fixture, so I need a lamp that is pretty bright. I don't want a floor lamp but I want a lamp that will sit on the desk, and maybe one with a magnifier (but not a must have).
Does anyone have a lamp that they love and can recommend? I have an old, cheapie gooseneck style lamp that clamped onto the desk but the plastic piece that holds the lamp to the clamp is broken beyond repair. Time to upgrade! Thanks in advance!

I like Ott lights (available at JoAnn's for sure, maybe other craft stores). The one in my craft room clamps onto the table and has a moveable neck that allows me to change the position as needed. It's old so they may not make that style any more. I also have a task lamp that travels to crops.

Another Ott user...have 2 in my craftroom, both 'telescoping' ...one plug in travel size for crops, and my newest a battery operated for crops without electricity. ott lampalso living in CA, we can only get flourescent bulbs, so have the same trouble with dimness in the room. These lights just really bring out the true colors for me.

Thanks for bringing this up. I also need something courtesy of energy save bulbs - grrr. I have an ordinary floor lamp but it keeps getting in my way so think I'll look for an Ott-lite.

I love my OTT but I only have a little one, but it works for scrapping!

We just moved into a new house that is super energy efficient. I'm thankful for low energy bills in our super hot summer, but I hate all the orange low watt fluorescent bulbs they put into all the fixtures.
Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I've been thinking of an Ottlite for a long time but I'm not sure which one to get.
I'll check out the Ikea one too because I was planning on going to the store this week so pick some other stuff up. Thanks for that suggestion, Sara.

Change out the CFL for halogen, if you can. They are so much better - whiter and brighter, yet still energy efficient. Also, not all CFLs are the same. Watch for the wattage comparison. If you normally use a 60W bulb, try to find a CFL closer to the 100W equivalent.
I have one normal swing arm lamp and one OTT on my desk. I really liked my floor lamp - I placed it tight to my desk, saving desk top space. Unfortunately, it quit on me.

I've hear that you can just buy the ott lightbulbs if you want a different opinion.

I second the vote for an Ott light!! They make quite a few different designs, and if you get them on sale, they aren't too bad in terms of price. I got a floor-lamp version from JoAnns for use in our family room (so I can color, doodle, or art journal while we're watching tv, lol!). I knew it was on sale, but it was something like either 60% or 70% off, when we got up to the checkout counter. I think they go on sale a few times a year.

I have two ott lights. One is a floor lamp and the other sits on my table. It also has a magnifier built into it. My lighting is in the ceiling fan located in the center of my room. It casts shadows when I'm working at my desk. Drives me crazy so I needed lighting from another angle. Ideally I would like to put more lighting in the ceiling around the room.

" Ideally I would like to put more lighting in the ceiling around the room."
we put some track lighting up in my room (from Ikea, maybe?) and it helps with the ambient lighting situation, but I definitely still use my desk light for actual working. (it's nothing fancy, and not wired in-- the power cord is long enough so it goes over to the wall and down to a plug-in.

I was going to say look for availability of daylight bulbs in your area and then you can use whatever lamp/s you want. I did have a clamp one with magnifier I had for cross stitching and just took the magnifier off for scrapbooking. I got the lamp on sale but in hindsight I would just buy a cheaper lamp to suit your space and then buy the dalylight bulbs. This link is similar to what I have minus the magnifying glass. I really like the snake like support. I have mine clamped high up on a computer desk (the sort with shelving above) and can twist the flex to get the light to shine exactly where I want it to.
