My neighbor called me this morning and told me that her oven was dead and asked if she could use my oven today. I told her that I had to drive DD to work and then go to the store and told her to just use her key.
This neighbor has been over before and she's the one that comes over while we're out of town to scoop the litterbox, refill food/water and make sure that cat is well. My cat knows this woman.
Woman walks in with her key and the cat begins hissing and growling at her. As bad as this sounds...normal enough. Cat voices her displeasure, and then exits the room to hide until the coast is clear.
But today was different. The cat didn't back off. The cat approached my neighbor, still hissing and growling. Neighbor ended up leaving the house with the oven on and key on the kitchen counter. She called me and asked if she should bring her husband in. I told her that the cat does NOT know her husband and that would only make things worse.
I told her that if she cannot get back in, to simply crack the door and lock the bottom lock and leave the oven on. (not ideal, I know...but between taking DD to work and my quick trip to Kroger, I was only gone an hour...and I got news of the cat issue a good 20 minutes into my time out)
She was able to get back in, get the oven turned off and retrieve the key. When I got home, the cat was perched at the bottom of the stairs.
She's been fine the rest of the day. I know this woman has never done anything to the cat...never hurt her, or antagonized her. It's this kind of stuff that makes me wonder if she really is losing her mind as she ages. (she's 14) It just doesn't seem right.
We don't see the vet every year...(the vet says she doesn't need to see her every year) but perhaps it's time for a check up.

Is she a British Blue? My cousin's Blue was like this - she was really the doggiest cat I've ever seen - definitely more protective than your typical cat.

I wouldn't assume anything is wrong with the cat. Cats are insane. They purr happily one minute while you pet them, then suddenly bite the crap out of you. They move their whole body to avoid you (their beloved owner of many years) touching them and won't keep off the lap of the visitor who hates cats. They knock shit off counters just to watch it break.
Maybe she smelled different or something that is obvious to a cat. But more likely, there is no reason at all, you will never know why, and the cat is a totally normal I sane cat.

My cat did something like this several months ago. We were out of town and like every other time we have been out of town for the past 7 years, my in laws came twice a day to feed our cat. They usually bring their dinner over to our house too and eat here so the cat has company.
Anyway, this last time, in April, that cat stood on her food storage container and wouldn't get off. My MIL tried to move her so she could open the container and get her food out. Well....she hissed and bit my MIL.
In May, we had our neighbors over and told them that something was going on with our cat and to just ignore her. Well, our 1 neighbor couldn't resist and bent down and stuck his fingers out at her and she hissed and then tried to bite him but luckily didn't actually end up biting him.
She is an indoor cat has has bit us before and always has been a bit ornery.
I asked our vet about it and she said since the cat was showing signs of aggression, she recommended we put her on anti depressant medication. I tried the medication for about 3 days and then stopped. The medication was causing the cat to hide out all day under my sons bed for whatever reason. It was like we didn't have a cat anymore. She wouldn't ever come out except to eat and then she would go right back under the bed.

My cat has a tendency to go pet cemetery on people after they've petted him for a few minutes.

I must be in a slaphappy mood tonight because I am dying laughing at this thread, and especially at the photo of that very intimidating cat. I love kitties, and they are definitely moody things, aren't they.

I think maybe the cat associates your neighbor coming over to when you are out of town. Maybe Kitty was trying to say, "Go away, I don't need you! My people are still home".
(I have 4 cats so I speak cat.)

I have a cat like that..he's 11. He loses his mind when other people are in the house. If we're home he hides, but if we're away and our neighbor comes to feed them (other cat is fine), he hisses and howls and moans and is generally terrifying, apparently. (He's a Snowshoe so has that Siamese 'talking' howl that's so much fun at 3 a.m.) When we come back after a week or so, he does it to US, until we say, "we're home, stupid" and then he's fine. He's also very much in love with my youngest DS and will bang his head on his bedroom door until it's open. I'm not sure if he's senile, overprotective, or just generally dumb. He's very dopey affectionate to the people he knows very well.

Cats definitely get senile as they age. I mentioned it to my vet when I brought my 19 year old cat in and she confirmed. My Frisky girl has got better now she's she's adjusted to being blind and deaf, but she was definitely losing it for awhile.

This thread is making me laugh, too. Earlier today I was talking to my mother about my crazy cats (one of them I truly believe has kitty autism and the other has definite spatial awareness issues) and I said "Why can't I just have normal... wait, there is no such thing as a normal cat. They're all nuts!"

I don't think your cat is crazy. I think she associates your neighbour being in your house in your kitchen with you being away on vacation. She was startled and upset when all of a sudden there is the neighbour lady in the kitchen (in her mind back to feed her) which only happens when you are all away-but wait-when did you pack your bags, say good-bye, all of the other routine things that happened before?
This is why your cat reacted the way she did-she was startled to see the neighbour lady there again without the standard routine of you leaving to go on vacation.
That's my theory anyway, and I've had cats for 47 years.

Cats are all nuts. I've said for years "my next cat is going to be nice." One can only hope. LOL We had a house full of people last weekend. (all 3 kids were home...so the 5 of us and each of the girls had their boyfriends over for a few days/nights) One of the boys the cat has already met and is familiar with. She tolerates him...but keeps her distance. The other boy, who the cat has never even seen (and has worked in a kennel...so he's got the "animal instinct thing" going on) took treats from him and he even managed to pet her head (quickly...before she could pull away) TWICE. So second boy is fearless and bold, AND he made his bed every day...the only person in the entire house to do so. I think he's a keeper.

My almost 14 year old cat could be a twin to your cat, she looks just like yours. Velvet has always had this attitude toward people except for my dh and me. She's feisty, that's for sure!
ETA: That is her paw/claws in my profile picture. Just a litle example of her attitude. LOL

my step mom had a cat that looked just like that, and he was a terror to everyone EXCEPT for her.. I mean he hated everyone else.we were there once a week for a few hours and he never grew to like any of us. One of us would be walking down the hallway and he would attack from behind, we'd be sitting on the couch watching tv and he'd attack our legs(and I mean ATTACK) or he'd run up to the back of the couch and go for your head.
she had him declawed because he was tearing my kids up,and anyone else who came to visit. Only thing is after that he started using his back feet which were not declawed and biting instead, I threatened to file his teeth down.
he hated my youngest as a baby and even attacked him as he lay on a blanket on the floor.he especially hated my daughter, who was 5-6 years old(and my oldest) he would literally knock her pictures over off of the tables and bookshelves. ONLY her pictures, he would leave all other pictures alone, stepmom had to put the pictures of my daughter on the wall and that dang cat would still try to get to them and knock em off(and was successful a few times).
it was really hard to be sad when that cat got out the door after a recent move she made and disappeared.he was vicious. but he was sweet as gold to her.
