So, I showed a friend of mine my PL album and she loved it and showed interest in doing something similar, even asked for copies of the pages that "featured" her She moved in together with her boyfriend 6 months ago AND her birthday is coming up so I was thinking maybe a simple 6x8 album with a page or two by me and page protectors, for them to document their "year one", would be a sweet gift. I know her budget is really tight, not much room there to spend on supplies. She's my brother in law's girlfriend so we are all really close, the two of them, my boyfriend and me. Maybe I'll make it a Christmas gift for the both them. Thoughts? Options I'm not seeing? Ideas? Throw 'em at me!!

Maybe a small album and a set of PL supplies like the WRMK and HS sets - they are really reasonable at Micheal's and even walmart.

Do you want to give a gift that they will enjoy. Or do you want to get her a gift that might set her of in a hobby that you could enjoy together?
Since I would like the last option, I would get her a starter kit and deliver it with that promise of help/lessons.

When I got my SIL started on PL, I gave her a pack of PP's, a variety of cards (that I pulled from my core kits) and I actually completed a whole spread for her). I decided not to get her an album because those are often picked based on personal tastes and an album I might choose is going to be way different than one she would. She doesn't have budget restraints, though.
Another thing you could do is to make a few pages on the PL app and put them into a photo book. I'm doing that with all my 2014 photos (that's the plan, anyway...I have September & October done and am trying to work backwards). The app is a good, budget friendly alternative. $2 for the app and then $1-$2 for kits.

I would not make it a Christmas gift. If you think she'd like to get into the hobby, I think your album, page protectors and a completed spread in it, is a terrific idea. I would add a set or two of pocket cards. If that goes over your gift budget, then just supplies pulled from your stash. But I'd give those separately without gift wrap and would ask if she'd like to get together to work on our projects. (Knowing that in the beginning, I might not get anything accomplished besides encouraging a friend and fellow crafter.)

What a thoughtful gift!
I love your idea of gifting her a 6x8 with some protectors. Maybe get her a mini kit to start with. If it's something she loves doing, you could always collect more for her now through Christmas (watch the sales) and give her the additional supplies then.
Another thing you could do is pull some of the duplicate cards from your stash and gift those to her in some cute & creative way as well. I know if I was just starting out, I'd love a little taste of various core kits/brands and it will help give the album some variety, too.

This is exactly how I got started scrapbooking. My now husband told me to get a hobby. I couldn't figure out what I liked. He was talking to women at his office, and someone suggested looking at Creative Memories. He found a consultant in our area, contacted her and bought me a whole bunch of stuff to get started. Now he regrets that. HA HA HA. Anyway…..what a wonderful idea to gift your friend! Everyone above me has already mentioned great ideas. How about a date stamp? I just bought the cutest Heidi Swapp date stamp at Michael's with a coupon. Maybe add a classic punch? Circle, butterfly, square, etc.

This is a great idea! One thing I did for a friend that saw one of my albums and showed a lot of interest was get her one of the smaller albums that had like 20 pages sewn in the binding. I think they were by Becky Higgins and were made for a small kit? Like for seasons kit or something. Anyhow, I found it on amazon. Then I bought her a small kit with a coupon. I also picked a few cards from my stash that I knew she would enjoy and added them. She really liked it. She asked a lot of questions in the beginning and I showed her what to do and my favorite accessories (taper runner, for example). Now we have a hobby that we both enjoy and discuss.

Thanks SO much everyone!! Great ideas and tips! If she is short on money, I would buy an 8.5x11 3 ring binder, a pack of document protectors and a pack of assorted 8.5x11 cardstock. Then I would go through my own stash and pull all kinds of stuff she would like - stickers, pl cards, letters, etc. I would either give her some glue sticks or affordable adhesive and teach her to use it sparingly. We recently did this with patients at the hospital and they love their scrapbooks, which cost less than $5 for the binder and page protectors. Later she can transfer the pages to WRMK or other albums, and document protectors are always like 50 of them for $5 from Walmart, etc.

I like all the ideas already posted. My Tuesday Morning has had the WRMK cards and small albums (8x8?) recently. It's not my thing, so I didn't look at the price. But also maybe a corner rounder and an AF pen for journaling.
And of course an offer to help get her started....

I think that would be a really sweet gift! I love the idea of a 6x8 Handbook or Snap album (the woodgrain Handbooks are ten bucks on Scrapbook.com last time I looked) with an assortment of divided page protectors in it, and maybe some pre-cut cards where she can tell the story. As soon as I get my computer up and running I'm going to create a printables set with this theme--but you could start with things like "Unpacking," or "Favorite space in the new place" for her to write in her own thoughts and tuck in a photo beside it.

A PL starter kit would be so fun! Like everyone mentioned, a set of cards and a mini book. Then you could add a tape runner, black journaling pen, and a few embellishments. I remember first starting scrapping and got so much done because there were fewer choices. I wouldn't go overboard with options for a newbie. Oh and maybe direct her to an online photo printer where your first set of prints is free (do they still do that?) what at a thoughtful gift!
