@sdeven - you mentioned antiquing in your weekend crop thread.
So do you go to antique stores (or estate sales or auctions) looking for valuables, looking for collectables, looking for random items you like, or just like looking at things from times past? Do you display your items or box them up?
I'm just curious. I've never been into antiques although I do have some heirlooms (that are probably worthless monetarily), but I keep them because they belonged to my grandparents and GGP's. I do like looking at old timey things and I watch Antiques Roadshow. The only "antiques" I have displayed are two big glass pickle jars and a two large pottery crocks for pickling. And I'm not even a huge pickle fan! LOL!
I should post this on the NSBR thread, but it's a spin off....right?

My husband is into it more than I am. But I do enjoy it. We will go to antique shops, junk shops, estate sales, auctions, flea markets, and garage sales. I like to look at everything! I will find things to display sometimes. Sometimes you find a great deal on old furniture. Sometimes I find art journaling/scrapbooking fodder that's cheap, because my family stuff can't be used, but other people's I have no problem with. We have many items that are sentimental and probably worth little but to us are priceless because of the memory or family treasure. I have a quilt from my GGM, handstitched that I display in my bedroom. My husband has items from his gp's bakery and we both have items from our family's farms of old. (Funny since he was a Chicago boy and although many of my relatives had farms, my family didn't - we now live on 40 acres and are trying to start a hobby farm.)

Antiques--at least in Texas--refers to old things, vintage things, up cycled things, reworked things, some heirlooms, some just old,...from antique stores, junk-tique stores, vendor malls, etc. there are some small towns in Texas that have downtown squares where there are rows of those kinds of stores along with art shops, little cafes and such. I love to shop those kinds of places. Sometimes I buy things: this weekend I bought some old dishes, a small hand stitched quilt, a galvanized metal bucket, a couple of McGuffey readers, and an old pearl necklace. Oh and a ladder. Sometimes I just look and take pictures of displays and furniture and don't buy a thing. I keep an album of shopping pictures. I collect a few items: Pyrex bowls in a certain pattern, silverware, frames I can paint, an occasional Mason jar, old flags, books, quilts... I like being around old stuff. I like furniture with history and real wood. I like handmade things. I appreciate craftsmanship. I like the adventure of shopping among random things never knowing exactly what I will find. I love lunching in a little cafe that is family run. I like little towns where life is simple and ordinary and good for the most part. i like to reuse things, whether for their original purpose or some other secondary use. I like to get a good deal. My finds are used in my decor. Sometimes they are gifts. Sometimes I use them for a while then sell them in my brother's auction.

I used to go antiquing often and have a house full of my finds. I love old things and the history they have. I have too much stuff though so I had to stop. My mother pretty much knows to run things by me before she donates them. I'll get rid of something I have to accommodate something she had.
I have used 'found items in my scrapbooks - pieces of lace or crochet, keys, etc and I also scan items and use it on a page, like my grandmother's watch and my own baby shoes.

I know absolutely NOTHING about the value of antiques; I just know that I like old things and enjoy looking in the shops not knowing what I might find, if anything, that day. Our town has tons of retirees and so has LOTS of estate sales; a few nearly every weekend. Like with all antique shopping, garage sale shopping, junk shopping....it is hit or miss. I have found some lovely things, like a green glass cake plate that I use as a plant stand; I have also found them selling a half tube of toothpaste!
I am fortunate to have some older things from my Mom and Grandma, like my Mom's hope chest, a side board, and a gossip bench (phone table and seat in one) that I proudly have in my home. I also have my G'ma's cookie jar from when I was a kid; that is probably my favorite item!

Thanks Ladies. Like I mentioned in the OP, I like looking at old timey things, AND also going to vintage houses and gardens, ghost towns. But I've never "gone antiquing". Maybe I should start!
