DH and I are heading to Charleston SC later this week for 4 days to celebrate our anniversary. Staying at the Belmond in the historic district. Originally didn't plan to rent a car, but I think we may, although for a short visit, we don't want to have to go far. So far I had a harbor cruise on the Schooner Pride and a tour of Magnolia Plantation as possibilities. Maybe a cooking class at Charleston Cooks.
I'd love some other suggestions or reviews of the above, as I'd like to book a couple of these things in advance. Any better plantations than Magnolia that you would suggest? Also, I'd love a recommendation for a good beach.
Can't wait to go - we know it will be hot but I have been wanting to get to this area for years! Thank you!!

I thought Isle of Palms was pretty. Hominy grill is a must-do. Their shrimp and grits are some of the best I've ever had. dd fell in love with one of their side dishes so we bought their cookbook. Sure enough, that dish wasn't in it. So I emailed them, asking for the recipe and they sent it right away Parking is a bit of an issue though. Be prepared to walk a few blocks away and walk. It isn't in the busiest part of the city. We got lucky and after two trips around the block parked right in front.

If you go to Hominy Grill, do yourself a favor and get the chocolate pudding. It is the best ever - even Alton Brown thinks so. You can go to Patriot's Point - from there you can go to Fort Sumter and there's a decommissioned aircraft carrier and submarine you can go through if you are into that sort of thing. You can go sailing out there as well - not at Patriot's Point but right next to it. There's a series of docks and signs. Definitely go to Magnolia Plantation if you can. There's several beaches obviously. There's dinner cruises you can take as well. Beautiful sunsets here right now! King Street has amazing shopping and really pretty architecture. You can take horse & carriage rides downtown to see the city. I love seeing the history down there, but it's hard to do in a car.

Take a carriage ride. They tell great local stories and you will learn lots about the history of Charleston.

Skip the cooking class and just eat at FIG, Husk and the Rarebit (lunch). Please don't go to Hymans or Bubba Gumps for seafood, or Ruth Chris for steaks... Eat local!!!! See a Riverdogs game Isle of Palms is probably your best bet for a beach, or Sullivan's Islnd for a little more local crowd... While you're out there, eat at Poes for the best burger and Obstinate Daughter for seafoos. Patriots Point, Fort Sumter and the Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park under the Ravenel Bridge if you're planning on renting a car... I'd recommend a car rental for at least one day for this reason alone, two days if you will go to the plantation Magnolia Plantation or Middleton Plantation Walk through the open air market for your souvenirs

Lots of great ideas for me to check out - thanks! Hominy Grill will for sure make our list as we don't have any restaurant plans beyond the hotel. Glad to hear Magnolia Plantation is recommended.
Hmmm...wasn't sure about the carriage ride but we had considered a walking tour (probably a late one since it would be cooler and gives us something to do later in the evenings) but I might look into that again.

Go to Husk, and I wouldn't wait to make dinner reservations here or any of the other suggestions. There are two Husk restaurants in the country, and one of them is here in Nashville. It's my favorite restaurant at the moment!
I also second the carriage ride. It's a great way to see the city and get some history. Try to do that early on in your visit. We also did a walking tour on another visit that was great, but I wouldn't recommend it during this time of year (hot, hot, hot).

Thanks for the reminder - didn't think about actually making restaurant reservations ahead of time. I have some work to do tonight!

Yeah, if you do the walking tour in the evening, that's not a bad idea. We did a ghost tour one either there or Savannah (I can't remember where exactly, I'd have to look through my scrapbook). It was fun, but later scared the bejezzus out of me and I couldn't sleep that night. Lol!

Oh, two other things. The trolly is great (and free!) but don't try to ride it during rush hour times. We jumped right on at 3pm one day and couldn't find one with any space on it a 5:30.
Second, check out the city market. Don't buy anything until you walk all the way through though. Lots of similar items but with a variety of prices. If you're looking for a sweetgrass basket, get it from one of the stands on the highway outside of Charleston instead of at the market. They're quite pricey.

The tour guide said there was a little girl ghost that liked to pull on the covers while guests were sleeping. Umm yeah, I had trouble sleeping that night!

I think one of the ghost tours would be perfect - something both DH and I like (and I like to think not much scares me...we'll see).
I just booked our ride on the Schooner Pride for our 2nd day there...hoping that would be enough of a history overview instead of the carriage ride.
Not familiar with sweetgrass baskets - I'm sure something that I would love. Cannot wait to browse and shop there!

Another vote for the carriage ride. I've also done tours of several of the historic homes down the the Battery (another good spot to walk around). They're really cool. I remember liking the Nathaniel Hawthorne house. If you rent a car another cool plantation is Middleton Place. The gardens are amazing. I thought Fort Sumter was a disappointment and I love history. The ferry ride was nice (you will likely need advance reservations), but the fort is in pretty bad shape.

Carraige Ride Rainbow Row and the Battery Fort Sumter Ferry Ride Lots of shopping at the Public Market and on Kings St.
Restaurants (1) Hanks Seafood -- but must have reservation and it can get pricey but awesome food (2) We really enjoyed Low Country Bistro for lunch one day You almost can't go wrong, but we didnt' enjoy the Irish Pub even for drinks and appetizers.
We had a car since we drove there and honestly in 3 days never took it out of the original parking space because there was plenty to do within walking distance. Enjoy your trip! It is a great city to visit!
We did a lot of walking and general sight seeing. There are swings on the pier nearest the cruise ship dock. We sat one night on one and just rocked with the wind. Very relaxing!

Consider taking a bus tour...they leave from the visitor center which has tons of parking and a lot of useful information inside. It's nice to ride in air conditioned comfort while someone tells you about the areas and buildings you are seeing. They make a stop on the battery for you to take pictures as well. Once you arrive back to the visitor center, you can get a trolley pass there and pick up the trolley to wherever you'd like. You will already be a little familiar with the various areas. For a restaurant, we love High Cotton on Bay St.

I just booked our ride on the Schooner Pride for our 2nd day there...hoping that would be enough of a history overview instead of the carriage ride. Did you do a dolphin or sunset tour? If so you might be disappointed as there is no "tour", they literally just go around the harbor. The crew will answer questions but it isn't like on the larger tour vessels where they have spiel. We went on the dolphin one a month ago and LOVED it but we just wanted a harbor ride, we weren't looking for a tour. My daughter got to "steer" the boat and my husband helped hoist the sails. We will DEFINITELY do it again! I remember doing one of the other boats last year (one of the ones that have two levels) and that really was a tour. I can't remember what company it was though they all are kind of the same. I like the carriage rides but my husband doesn't like the stinky mule butts so we didn't do one this time. Patriots Point is really cool but very hot this time of the year. So hot. We love Waterfront Park, my daughter loves the fountains and we love the swings or even just walking along under the tree canopy. Or even just walking along the roads near Battery Park and looking at the lovely houses. When we go we always eat at Hall's Chophouse and Cru Cafe. I always thought it was a tourist trap but my MIL and I had a surprisingly good lunch at Fleets Landing. We're not fancy/foodies so places like Husk and FIG never really appealed to us. If you plan to stay in the area, there are plenty of pedicabs but our last trip we found out about Scoop. Basically free rides, all you do is tip the driver. We usually tipped $10 and that came out cheaper than pedicabs and I felt safer in a car. We stayed at the Harbor View Inn and I think the longest we waited for one of the cars was 10 minutes and that was because we needed a larger car than they sent originally. We will use them again!

Oh, we happened on the Calhoun Mansion tour last year and didn't really like it. It was a beautiful house but it just had so much stuff and that monopolized the tour. It was more about the possessions within that the owner has brought in, they weren't original to the house or place or time. If you like antiques and looking at collections rather than learning about the history of a house, you might like it.

Charleston is one of my most favorite cities. So many wonderful places to eat. My favorite is Fleet Landing, right on the water. Have the crab cakes. to. die. for.
Downtown there is an extensive trolley system that goes all over the downtown area, and the visitors center is really nice, and will provide you with a wealth of maps/tickets to various tours etc. The Farmer's market on Saturdays in the square is really cool, and their downtown area is really nice and well developed with lots of places to shop and eat. If you want chain food, the Mellow Mushroom (which we don't have here) was very good and had a nice bar area. The city market is also really cool to walk through. If you go during the week- find the lemonaid guy. Their Arnold Palmer's are fantastic!
Be aware if you are renting a car that parking can be at a premium downtown. Many of the garages charge 15 bucks a day to park, and the hotel I stayed at in June charged 20.
Folly beach is within driving distance, and has a great pier area as well as a nice restaurant. The little store there sells ice cream along with t-shirts and fishing licenses.
Have fun!

Take a carriage ride. They tell great local stories and you will learn lots about the history of Charleston. I second this... I thought it would be cheesy.. but we really enjoyed it.

Yes Hominy Grill is a must. Fleet Landing is great too. Make your reservations now for the restaurants that take them... You won't get in otherwise (particularly at Husk or FIG, both of which are not to be missed).

I absolutely love Charleston. We aren't foodies, so didn't feel like we would appreciate some of the pricier places mentioned here. Hominy Grill was just "eh" for us, and we actually preferred Hyman's Shrimp & Grits to Hominy's (and the hushpuppies at Hyman's are some of the best sweet hushpuppies I've ever had.) We did really like Fleet's Landing, and eat there again. Also, we enjoyed breakfast at Toast! enough to go twice. We enjoyed Magnolia Plantation more than I thought we would. We took a tour van from the Visitor's Center... I don't think we would've liked it as much on our own. We've done two different carriage rides, a walking tour, a ghost tour, and a nighttime tour of the Old City Jail. Our walking tour with Charleston Sole was our favorite (we had a Groupon, but ended up tipping the guy enough to make up for the whole price and then some... he was that good.) The ghost tour was okay, the Old Jail tour wasn't worth a separate tour.

Thanks everyone for the ideas! We loved Charleston and could have used a week there! We rented a car last minute, which was nice to have, although we didn't drive much. Made it to both Folly beach and Isle of Palms. Ate at Black Magic Cafe (near Folly Beach), Hanks, Kaminsky's, Southend and Low Country Bistro. We were on the club level at the Belmond and there was food out almost every time we were in and out so overall we ate toooo much. The Schooner Pride ride was nice, although yes, it didn't have much for a narrative about the area, yet we still enjoyed it. The ghost tour wasn't a bit scary, but still fun. Magnolia Plantation was interesting. We were surprised by how quiet it got by 11. We found live music at Molly Darcy's that ran late (supposed to stop at 11, they played until about 11:30) and then we found a little bar that had a live band until nearly 1. So many shops we didn't get to, I would love to go back with my daughters someday.
