And I would do it for $3. If I over charged someone by $3 I would not be giving her a store credit, I would be giving her the cash or process the credit on her debit/credit card.

they should have been able to back off the entire purchase and then redo it for the correct amount. that excuse is just lazy

As soon as I read this I thought, "I bet it was Forever 21."
Toys R Us tried to pull the whole "we can't refund you cash because of our check policy" crap one time. I bought a video game, wrote a check for the purchase, and then waited while they retrieved the game from their storage area (because they don't keep games out on the shelves). They didn't have the game in stock even though the inventory checker thing showed they had plenty. No big deal...just refund me my money, and I'll get the game elsewhere. They only wanted to give me store credit. I asked for the manager. Fortunately, the game was my only purchase so they gave me my check back. I haven't stepped foot in that store since.

I would have exploded. For a bit over $8.00? At a store that you shop at frequently? I save my wrath for something that is a higher ticket item and worth my time & energy to ensure a successful result.
Consider it a pre-payment on your next purchase.
I hate injustices no matter how small and bad customer service. It was not OP's fault that the shirt rang up incorrectly and it should have been rectified correctly.
That being said - I just posted on the menopause thread that my dh says I have "Angry Wife Syndrome".

You weren't trying to return something, your item was rung up incorrectly. The cashier should have called a manager and voided the sale and re-rung your purchases. It's not that hard. I wouldn't have gotten nasty but I also wouldn't have left until I was able to speak to a manager that could give me actual money back. There's no reason you should have to accept store credit for THEIR mistake.

I was thinking the exact same thing, it's likely Forever 21. it only needed to happen to me once before I quit shopping there for gifts for my nieces. I was really surprised that a big chain like that has that kind of policy. and yet they do and they get away with it. I agree. I Really dislike this store and I refuse to shop there after having a similar issue.

Toys r Us is another store I refuse to shop in. DD got 2 identical gifts for her birthday. I had the receipt for one of them but they refused to refund the money or even give a Store credit for the value of the gift, telling me that they were clearancing it out and would give me clearance value of about $2, despite the fact that I had a receipt indicating the price paid the week before. This was about 6 years ago. With all the other options for similar shopping, I'm amazed anyone still shops there and that they're still in business.

Hobby lobby did that to my friend once---rang up her purchase which about half the items were 50% off but the cashier rang them up full price. Friend wrote check and then noticed the error. Cashier told her to go to the service cashier who then refused to cancel the sale and re-ring; they would only refund via HL gift card because "they don't allow a refund on a check until after 2 weeks" even though it was the cashiers fault!!! OK - I can see how they wouldn't refund on a check because that's the sort of thing con artists do (write checks get cash back and then return items for the non sale price, not the sale discrepancy thing). However, why they couldn't void, return the check and re-ring the sale is beyond me. I know I have been in shops where the cashier wasn't certain how to do a void etc. She just re-rang the sale and kept the original receipt to know what to void when she had a moment with the manager.

Go to town on social media, especially Twitter. That will really annoy them.

I would've taken her response to mean that they can't do refunds on their credit card/debit card machines... A lot of stores program/set their machines so that staff can't process refunds...
Until a manager/head office told me they wouldn't refund me the difference, I'd go with her not phrasing/explaining it well... Sounds like she did what she had authority to do - a store credit...

Yesterday, I took my 17 daughter shopping at one of her favorite stores. She shops there all the time, and she/I know the return policy, and they tell you their return policy before they start ringing anything up. Basically, you have a certain number of days to return items, with a receipt, but all you get is store credit, no cash back.
I bought her a bunch of different things, and as we were on our way out of the store, I took the receipt out of the bag to put in my purse, and I noticed the last item that was rang up was the wrong price. It was a shirt that was originally $22.90, but that was marked out with a black marker, and $14.00 was handwritten on the tag. The shirt rang up at $22.90. So I went right back to the register to let the cashier know it had rang up wrong. Well, they wouldn't give me the money back as a credit on my card, only a store credit. Even though it was their mistake. The cashier said their register has no way to give cash back.
I took the store credit as I really had no other choice, but what a crock. They made a mistake and still couldn't give me the difference back? What a stupid system. Was this Papaya? I'm always so wary when I shop there for DD because of their strict "return" policy. Thanks for sharing - I'll have to watch for this in the future so I don't let them complete the sale if there's a wrong price! Problem is, I don't think they show the pricing on a screen that faces out, so I may just have to ask them to quote each price to me as each piece rings up. Fun, fun. ETA - now I see it's Forever 21... I'll have to watch there, too, then. Ugh. Jen

Forever 21?
ETA: Now I see I was right. I make sure dd really wants and tries on everything before buying anything there.

^ that. I think I'd hate to wait on a pea - ever - in any cirumstance at this point. Exactly. This is why I was sooooooo glad when I no longer had to work retail. People erupting at the smallest things or zooming to ultra-rage syndrome in less than a second, all in the name of "pea livid" or apparently "disliking injustices for any reason". Being snippy and snappy with a cashier. Equating an issue at a cash register with "injustice" is silly and a needless waste of rage. Ask for the manager. Seriously people, save your ire for what really counts. In reading these posts, I would love to ask your customers or those around you if you ever made a mistake or had a bad day or were less than customer-service-y.

You contact the attorney general of your state. It always cracks me up when the cashier tells you something can't be done. Yes, it can, call over the manager and they will find a way to fix it. The cashier at Kohl's freaked out on me last week that my coupon 'wasn't scanning!" I said that is fine, explained what I bought, and asked her to call over a manager. After repeated stating that I must not 'have met the terms of coupon' quite loudly, she finally entered it by hand. I in no way made a scene, just asked her to call over a manager. Except when it's the manager that is making it difficult. I had an experience at Kohl's a few weeks back. We went to get shoes for the kids. DD found a pair of sneakers she liked and they were a great price ($34.99). We got up to the register and they rang up $49.99. I had dd go get the display shoe. Cashier said the code and original price on the tag didn't match the one on the box for our shoes. She got the manager over and the manager said that this wasn't even the correct tag for the shoe that we were trying to buy. The original price was $80. She said she'd give them to me for 50% off the original price. I said I would pay the price on the tag that was attached to the shoe. That it was not my fault that they had the wrong tag on the shoe. The manager was not very friendly about it at all. I stood my ground and she eventually gave them to me for the $34.99 price. As a customer, it's not my duty to ensure they have tagged the correct items. But I will from now on.

I have stopped shopping at Walgreens because of this. Drove me batty and not worth it!
