A friend of mine just started a new flock and I thought I would make her something like this in some cheery prints. No small children to suddenly hug her lol and her dogs are too small to jump that high, so the eggs would be safe as far as that goes. What do you think - handy or no?

That's my chicken in the photo. Well not her, but she looks like that. That apron is hilarious. I would like it.

Wellll, while it's cute, I don't think it's all that practical. Eggs have poo on them and this looks like it would be hard to clean. And I wouldn't want to wear anything that's been poo'd. Plus even though there are no small children or dogs, breakage would make a mess. How about something similar that fits inside a bucket.

That is so stinkin' cute! What a cool idea! I would think you could just throw it in the washer and clean it when you need to, but I don't keep chickens, so I don't know how accurate my opinion is on the practicality. But the cuteness/coolness factor is beyond. Just beyond.

I don't have chickens (our city voted against allowing them, dh is bummed) but wouldn't it be easier to just grab a basket than tie on an apron?

I think it's really cute too, but having had chickens for a few years I also agree that it would get gross pretty fast. Unless, the friend has a lot of chickens a very small bucket would work better. Many chickens don't lay every day so it's usually not much of a problem.

I"d say it is cute but not practical. My daughter uses a good sized plastic bowl. During the day she puts certain left overs in it the chickens get for a treat. Once a day she takes the bowl out, feeds the contents to the hens and puts the collected eggs in the now empty bowl. So one container does double duty. Because eggs are rather dirty the bowl is easy to scrub up before repeating the process.

It's adorable, but it would definitely get pooped up fairly quickly.

I have chickens. I think it's funny and cute but wouldn't use it, just not practical. However, if someone wanted to use it, and has chickens, well, they know they get poop eggs and what's the point in running out and washing the apron when you'll just put poopy eggs in the same holes again tomorrow? And you wash the eggs before you eat them, so who cares if the egg hole has had a poopy egg in it. You must remember, you're talking to germaphobe peas here.

It's cute on paper but when I go out to collect eggs I also do other chores like feed the girls, fill up their water, pull any weeds I spy in my garden, etc. A lot of bending and stooping and I'd be scared the eggs would fall out of the pockets. I also bring containers of scraps for my ladies and then put the eggs I gather in the empty container to tote them inside.

I like the idea of making something similar (and washable) to line the inside of a bucket vs. an apron. LOL when DH was up north last fall I had to take care of his chickens. I made the mistake of putting the eggs in my coat pockets and the heavy water thing banged against me when I was trying to hang it up. Ewww, smashed raw eggs inside your pocket is NASTY! I don't recommend doing that!

Thanks everyone! I am SO glad I asked! I will see if I can find a cute bucket or basket and do something for her along those lines

Lol!! Where do you think they come from? That's exactly what I was thinking! Same exit! Haha i know how "they get out", but it's quite a contrast to all of the cute backyard chicken blog posts and photos of "the girls" and their egg bounty. Maybe it's just my city hen-raising friends that do that. My parents ask if I recall reality about visits to the family farm when I say I want chickens.

I'm a germaphobe but I don't wash clean-looking eggs before I use them. I cook them well though (no raw eggs here). If they're dirty I wipe the gross off-usually those are the ones that get hard boiled. For gathering eggs we use a wire basket. With that apron I'd worry that just the movement of walking might pop an egg out of its pocket.

Most eggs do not have any 'poo' on them. The chicken is smart enough not to soil in her nest. A dirty egg most likely got that way from contact with the hen's feet. It's nothing to worry about.
The apron is really cute but one is often carrying something in a chicken yard and it might not be practical. I'd make and give it to her anyway, just because it's so darn cute! She will love it.

My chickens must be uncivilized. Our eggs always have poo on them.

You know, as others have said it will probably get grubby fairly quickly but on the other hand, it's thoughtful, unique, cute and would be handmade. I say make it. I'd love the thought process that was behind it. You're a kind friend.

I don't gather a lot of eggs that have poo on them. Eggs have a natural bloom on them and they last longer if you don't wash them. If an egg does have poo spots I wipe it off. Mostly it's a nonissue. I think the bedding you use in the nesting boxes makes a difference, as does how clean you keep the coop. A clean coop = clean eggs. When DH used pine shavings, the eggs had more poo on them. Once he switched to straw it seems like the eggs stay cleaner even though he doesn't clean out the coop any more frequently. Now that we have a bunch of younger chickens added to our remaining older ladies, they have started laying their eggs on the floor of the coop so those ones are poopier too.

I think its adorable. I say make it. Your friend will love it and how you thought of her. Poo or no poo it would still be a good gift. She could carry things other than eggs in the pockets. You could make it out of fabric that can easily cleaned like tablecloth fabric. If she gets poo on it she can hose it off and hang it to dry.
Go for it.
