Things that have sentimental value, whether I use them or not, I keep. But other than that, if I don't love it or use it I donate the items to the free shop that is run in conjunction with the family pantry in our town.

I know what you mean. It seems I'm always buying gifts for showers or graduations. I usually buy the gift a couple of weeks before the event, when it's convenient to go to the store. So the gift just sits, wrapped, on the counter or in the corner until the event. Do I need to create a "home" for gifts? I don't really have extra closet space. I'm always taking stuff to Goodwill. Almost every week. So I always have a bag in the corner of my office that the family knows is the Goodwill bag. They put stuff in there that they no longer want/use/need, and on Mondays I take it to Goodwill, which is next door to the studio where my dd takes keyboard lessons. So there's always a bag in the corner of my office. Etc. None of these types of things are truly permanent, but I guess I still need a place for them, behind closed doors, so they don't clutter up the house. I just wish my coat closet were bigger so I could put stuff like this in there. It barely fits our coats and the vacuum cleaner. I have one of those underbed storage boxes for the gifts to be given. Can you move your vacuum cleaner somewhere else and put the Goodwill box and the gifts box in there?

I don't really deal in categories, either.
If something is important I find a home for it. If something is not important enough for me to make a home for it, out it goes.
I have a gift cupboard for gifts, wrapping paper, gift bags. We have a change bowl on a shelf in the closet. All change gets taken there. We use change frequently (dig out all the quarters when we go feed the fish, dig out all nickels when we go to the nickel arcade, etc.). Hair ties, bobby pins, etc. have a permanent place in a bathroom drawer. I keep our bag for goodwill in my trunk so it doesn't clutter the house.

Our dump has an area with bins for almost anything -- St. Vincent de Paul, Goodwill, groups collecting shoes, books, etc. They also have a swap shop where you can drop off or pick up used items (including furniture.) The rest goes into the trash dumpster. Very handy one-stop shopping for the Saturday dump trip.

I use small change. It gets dumped everywhere - by the washing machine when I go through pockets before a wash, by my DH's bedside when he empties his trouser pockets, on the kitchen hot spot, dropped on the floor. It drives me nuts. I pick it up and put it in my purse then make a point of spending it. I have a money box for larger value coins which I dip in to when I need it for bus fares etc.

Where do things go when they go out? Depends, could be Goodwill, Salvation Army, Trinity Mission, or to family or friends if someone can use it. If it's broken beyond our ability to repair it goes to the curb and you'd be surprised how much of that stuff is scavenged before the garbage truck gets to it. You don't bother with garage sales, right?

we are lucky to have an arts recycling place in town...so anything that can be use in art will be accepted (mostly)...fabric, craft supplies, old calendars, pens, paper, etc...and you can get note pads cheap and paper clips and other fun stuff...the school district gives it space and super discounts to teachers..like..fill a paper bag for $5.
