So hubby and his dad used to do all this stuff and I stayed out of it. I find it very overwhelming etc. When I bought my home in CA, I just went with who the realtor recommended. Not sure if that was a smart thing or not. I am going to be looking into purchasing a home here in Missouri as I really really can't stand living in an apartment. What is the best way to go about finding a lender? Is using one recommended by a realtor a good idea? I don't want a bunch of people running my credit right before I go with a lender and try to purchase a house. My bank will not do it because I am out of state now and they do not have branches here? I dunno...that is what they said. Does anyone have any recommendations?
Houses here in the area I have to be in sell fast so I want to have my ducks lined up before we start looking at houses, that way I can move fast when the right one comes along.

We went with the realtor recommend mortgage broker when we first moved here. He showed us a range of plans from different companies. We liked him enough to use him again and have rec'd him to friends. I don't think using a realtor suggestion is a negative- if you trust their judgement.

Check into some credit unions. My first mortgage was through my credit union and they paid all of my closing costs!

Just an FYI - all mortgage inquiries in a two week period (it might actually be a month for mortgages, but I'm not sure, so conservatively, let's say 2 weeks) will only count as a single credit pull for credit score purposes. It's OK to shop for a mortgage, and in fact, you definitely should.
I'd start with credit unions in your area and if you're going to change banks since they don't have branches there, your new bank. It's fine to take the recommendation of your realtor under advisement, but do shop around. Don't just go with that recommendation.

We have always gotten pre-approvals through USAA before shopping or building our homes. The house we are in now, our realtor continued to recommend a bank but we were already pre-approved and her bank did not offer us as low of an interest rate.

I am so happy to see this post, as we too, are looking to purchase a home. We applied for pre-approval through our credit union, but their website says right on the home page that they are swamped and can take 30 days to get reviewed. I reached out to broker than a realtor recommended, and he was fired before he even started. He took 3 days to answer and email, then said we needed to talk by phone. I gave him days and times when I was available and those days and times passed with no contact.
I will be keeping my eye on this thread!

we've bought a house 3 times. 2 of those we used a broker our realtor recommended. the first was awful, wells fargo, had a horrible time with them. the second was just ok. this last time we went thru quicken. they offered us a better rate than the 2 banks and our credit union we had checked with. they also comped some fees because of a discount we got thru out work, but that wasn't a big deal and honestly we would've used them anyway because of the better rate. everything was handled online and occasional phone calls. communication was excellent and almost always same-day. it was easy to upload what they needed, and see what had been checked off the list and where we were in the process, and what was going on. I would highly recommend checking with them!

We went with a local credit union. One of the best things is our mortgage will always be with this credit union. The first time we bought a home we went with who our realtor recommended. That mortgage ended up being passed along at least two times in the short time we lived there.
Anyway, good luck and congratulations on finding/buying your soon to be new home!
