The girls and I were out shopping yesterday and we stopped into Claire's Boutique. I hate going in there because they want everything and I feel like everything in that store is WAY overpriced. Well I caved and bought the girls both a pair of earrings. They of course, immediately put them on.
About an hour later, one of DD#2's earrings had come apart. They were dangly, but they snapped apart, so they are now unwearable. She didn't even have them on but maybe an hour and we were out and about shopping, so it wasn't like she was playing sports while wearing them or anything. We weren't at the mall anymore, so I couldn't walk back to the store and try to return them.
Should I try to return them back to the store? Contact them online? Or just chalk it up as to stop buying their crap... the earrings were only $7. But still, for $7, I expected them to last longer than an hour!

I wouldn't make a special trip, but next time I was at/near the store, I would stop in and request a refund.

Return them to the store with the receipt and then, and only if they have some kind of issue with it, you can come back and post. I'm not even sure why an adult is asking this? However, I hope you get a replacement pair and she is happy with them.

I'd probably try and return them if the Claire's was near my house. If it was a big drive Id probably forget about it.

Well I know myself so I know that I would not make the time to take them back. I hate going to the mall and go maybe twice a year at most. So I would intend on taking them back, let them sit out waiting for me to return them but I would eventually just toss them after a while But I would kick myself for buying them in the first place and then return there in about 5 or 6 years and buy something else that didn't last.

I guess I took that last bit as snarky. Of course I'm an adult and asking this question, is this not a message board that we can ask questions at anymore?
We live pretty close to the mall, but we don't go there often. And I try REAL hard not to shop at Claire's if I can help it. We ended up going in there as a small treat for the girls before they have to go back to school. I guess I'll make a trip back up there, maybe once the kids go back to school. I'd be happy with a replacement, but I've never returned anything there so I don't know what their return policy is.

I'm always amazed at how many people would just let something like this go. At how many people seem to have money to throw away. I know seven dollars isn't earth-shattering, but still... it's like pulling it out of your wallet and throwing it in the trash. Somebody in the family worked hard for that seven dollars, and I guarantee if it were me, I'd be more than a little pissed if it were tossed away with such a cavalier attitude. I just don't understand the mindset of eh, it doesn't/didn't work, throw it away. Anyway, since you asked, I would most definitely take the earrings back to the store for a refund in a timely manner, and shop elsewhere for my earrings next time. Simply wearing a piece of jewelry while shopping doesn't equate to falling apart. Even in today's world of inferior products, I still expect a product to last more than an hour.

That's exactly how I felt! When they broke that fast, I was ticked off! We work hard for our money. And I don't want to just throw money away!
I didn't know if taking it back to the store or going through corporate would be better. They were obviously very cheaply made and I hate to think about how it's probably happened to other people!

OP to answer your question, return them. They probably paid $.10 for the earrings wholesale, so the loss is not a hardship.

No, you need to take them back and get your money back. Do not throw them out. Providing you don't live miles away I would do it soon. Seven dollars is seven dollars. I work retail and if something is damaged or breaks back it goes. Every time. Putting up with made in China crap irks my last nerve. The company need to send them back as it is probably a design flaw.

Well, not knowing how far she has to drive round trip to the store to return them has something to do with it. Her initial post didn't state how far she lived from the mall, and we don't know what her gas would cost. Hypothetical situation: My car gets about 19 miles per gallon. Gas is $2.68 a gallon in my town today. A mile driven costs me about 14 cents in gas. I live 17 miles from the mall. Which means a round trip gas cost of $4.76 to return the earrings. So, I would recoup a whopping $2.24 of my money. Now, that trip would take me about 40 minutes on average. I would rather not waste 40 minutes of my time for $2.24. I know many others would feel the same way. I would not be happy the earrings broke, but I would not make a special trip to town to return them. I'd chalk it up to a lesson learned and not buy from there again.

You can take it in whatever way you wish - whether you take it to the store or online or whatever, you surely need to make the point you did here? I just don't see coming here BEFORE I have made contact with the retailer as being a valid whine about an issue. Sorry about that.

I would have returned them before going home from the shopping trip, of course I don't know how far away from the store you were when they broke. It would have been a good lesson to model for your dds. Definitely go back to the store. I imagine dd was hugely disappointed and frustrated too.

Tonight I'll get off work at 5:00, getting home about 5:15 and will have the dd and puppy in the car and on the road by 5:30 to go to training. Then we will get home about 8:30. I will do household stuff, go to bed, get up tomorrow and work from home. I will take a 2 hour lunch to take the puppy to his other training class and work late to make up the time. The other days of the week I'm taking dd to her events. Friday we are going to a dog show out of town and Saturday we are going to a family event in another town. Both of those are 1 1/2 hours away. I do actually think about cost vs what my time is worth when I buy or return something. Returning something is about the travel cost and time to and from the business, the parking, the standing in line, etc. I'm not usually a disposable type of person, so first I would try to fix the earrings and if dd really liked them I would have her ask her dad to return them since he works nights and can go to the mall during the day when it is less crowded. But in the end I probably would not make a huge attempt to return them based on what they cost, what my time is worth (what I make per hour) and what my current schedule is while getting the kids, club and dogs ready for fair.
