How do you set it up? Does each family member get their own color? How do you do your to-do lists? Do you cross off items when they are completed? Highlight them? Any other useful tips? I just bought a nice/expensive planner and am afraid of messing it up- haha.

The best tip I learned before starting back with a "paper planner" this year was the Pilot Frixon erasable gel pens. All colors. Pens that erase. They are remarkable. I use iCloud and Google calendars (and can't stop b/c of multiple shared calendars for work) and everything is color-coded. So, I color code my planner too. But life happens and I needed to make changes easily. These are perfect. One thing you may hear about them is that in heat the ink disappears. I'll tell you, I live in DFW (TX) and for 2-3 weeks straight we have had 100+ degrees (and many MANY days of 104-106 and even one day of 108 at my house!). I have left my calendar in my car (!) all day outside with nothing disappearing. If it can withstand TX heat, it should be ok most places. My only other tip is white-out. I also stamp in mine and that doesn't erase!

Thanks for the top about the pens. I have some but have been worried about the ink fading. I live in the south too

Mine is written in whatever pen, pencil, crayon, or marker I can find. As long as the appointments and events are in the correct box, it functions just fine. And, no, I don't cross anything out unless something has been cancelled or rescheduled. sometimes I need to use my planner for reference (when did I get my mammogram last year?)
I have an 8 1/2 x 11 cheapo spiral planner. Appointments and events go on the full month 2 page spread, and my to-do lists and notes go on the week-at-a-glance pages.
And I stole two of my DD's head bands to use as straps around the front and back covers. A head band and a small binder clip keeps the loose stuff in place.
