Tomorrow all of my old coworkers go back to work after having their summer break from teaching. It is my first official day of retirement. I am planning on getting a pedicure and eating at a favorite hamburger place for lunch. My husband is out of town selling his mom's house and I can do whatever I want. What would you do to celebrate such a happy day? No family near and my good friends are all teachers. Just wondering.

Several teachers who retired from my district all went out for breakfast together on the first day back for us. I'd do that, but if there's no one else, your plan sounds good; you could also go to an afternoon movie or something

How exciting! I'm used to doing stuff by myself, so I'd go get a mani/pedi with leg and shoulder massage, eyebrows waxed, blow dry (or color, if it's time for that) and then movie and lunch at our upscale mall. (I call that the full treatment...) I do this a few times a year, and this summer have done TWO me days.

I'd do just that... get a pedicure and eat at my favorite restaurant. I'm so happy for you!! Retirement is wonderful. Just too bad you have to be old to do it! Enjoy!!!

Congratulations! I would do whatever it is that makes you feel extra special ... a spa day ... a day trip to a favorite city and eat at a restaurant that has been on your wishlist ... shopping. Whatever you end up doing - enjoy every moment of your earned retirement!

First a big congratulations on your retirement!!! We call it our " just because we can day". It sounds like you have some great plans already, a pedicure and lunch, maybe add some shopping just for you. Whatever you do, totally enjoy!!!

tarheelgurl my boys keep telling me they want to retire. They are 19 and 21. I turned 50 and two days later retired. I was lucky. Now teachers have to be about 58 to consider it. Can't decide if there is really a movie I want to see.

I'm so excited for you, enjoy your retirement!! I think your plans of lunch and a pedi is a great way to start your retirement. If it were me I'd probably sit at home all day in my PJ's talking to you girls!!

Gosh, how exciting. And the weather is supposed to be a beautiful sunny day with no rain forecast, at least as of this morning. There are some good movies out and a few real dogs. What do you like?

Lucky you! I have one more year. I always said I was going to plop myself in a beach chair with a cool beverage in the front yard of the school and waving at everyone as they went back to work.

Isn't the expected response to sit on the couch watching soaps and eating bonbons. Congratulations!!!! I say don't make any plans and just do as you please in the moment.

Congratulations! I would do a version of what you've got planned: pedicure, lunch I was craving, and maybe a leisurely stroll though bookstore. I'd also purchase a magazine or two, they're my old school treat to read on patio!

I'm.so.jealous. I am beginning year 22 but worked part time for several of those years to raise my dd so it only counts as half years. As soon as I hit the year where I have benefits, I'm out!

I like funny movies. I saw Trainwreck a few weeks ago and other than that one haven't seen a movie for ages.

Congratulations! If I ever get to retire I plan on sitting on the front porch with a cup of coffee to watch all my neighbors leave for work! My husband has spent the last two years waiting on the front drive with the dogs to greet me when I got home. It was cute, but then he wanted to TALK because he had been home all day by himself and I was exhausted from teaching ten year olds all day. It was a funny turn of events.

I have worked full time since I was 16. Thankfully I was able to buy some of my Social Security years and could go out earlier than most people do. I know most people don't leave at 50, but I kind of want to do nothing much until the new year and then maybe do something part time that I enjoy.

Congratulations! I retired a few years ago at age 45. I haven't missed working one day yet! One of my friends is a teacher who retired one year ago. She has kept herself busy by traveling with her hubby, remodeling her kitchen, going to yoga and we also go to some painting classes at a local art store. They're fun classes, acrylic on canvas, and they guide you step by step through the whole process. We also both love to read, so spend lots of time comparing notes about books. Our husbands are best friends and ride motorcycles together so when we both feel up to it, we go along for rides with the guys. She and I are planning on a trip to NYC next year as part of a tour group. We have a Motorcoach Tour service near us and they go on lots of fun trips both near and far. There are lots of one-day trips to different cities for plays, summer festivals such as the Mackinaw Island Lilac Festival, casino trips, mystery trips, etc. They're nice to go on because someone else is doing the driving and you meet new people who are also on the trip! I could think of lots to do if only I felt better, but these are just a few ideas.
