I will admit it. I would rather rearrange the dishes than open up the dishwasher to find a bunch of warped plastic stuff full of skunky water in the wrong rack all thrown around in there. I swear DH loads it in such a nonsensical way on purpose so that I won't ever ask him to do it!

I do this. I'm glad when my daughters take the initiative to put their dishes into the dishwasher, so I never rearrange it in front of them. It's not a control thing for me. They leave to much space in between dishes. I want to get as many in the dishwasher as I possibly can.

oh hell yes. I don't allow other people to load my dishwasher, and I don't attempt to load other people's dishwashers. Actually, I let them if they insist, but I explain that I WILL be rearranging as soon as their back is turned. My sister is the same way (my annoying aunt called her controlling when she told her to stay out of the damned dishwasher) and so was our grandmother. Apparently the gene skipped a generation. ETA I also scrub everything clean (no soap, just water & sponge or cloth) before it goes in the dishwasher. Shut up, I'm not interested in hearing about it. My sister won't let me rinse dishes at her house because she says I waste water. I might. I rinse everything too because I don't run my dishwasher every day. Sometimes it takes 2-3 days to have a full load and those dirty dishes can start smelling after awhile. Honestly though I did it when I did run my dishwasher every day No no no no noooooo. NO food in my dishwasher. Ever. I'm getting hives just thinking about it.

I rearrange every day! No one but me gets the space to dish ratio or that cluttered silverware doesn't come clean or that glasses stay dirty if you donet wash them in the top rack. And can I just say peanut better??

Only to fit in more dishes. If I can avoid washing things by hand, I do!

I wash everything (with dish soap) before it goes in the dishwasher. I just run it to sterilize, I guess but the thought of food in there icks me out.
I load back to front. DH front to back Sigh. If there are just a few dishes, I'll rearrange my way. If more than that I usually just let it go.

Yes I do this, and no I'm not a control freak. It's just that I know better than anyone else in my house how to pack a dishwasher to make the most efficient use of the space. It's my real life Tetris game. . That's awesome, what a perfect way of putting it!!! I'm saving that one next time someone comments on why I repack the dishwasher.

I'm like a previous poster in that I consider the challenge to fit as much as possible in the dishwasher my own personal game of Tetris. I get such a feeling of satisfaction when everything fits just so.

I wash everything (with dish soap) before it goes in the dishwasher. I just run it to sterilize, I guess but the thought of food in there icks me out. Haha! I was at my BFF's house one day and she asked me whether I rinse my dishes before putting them into the dishwasher. I replied that of COURSE I do, I don't want chunks of food in my dishwasher. She was so excited: "Oh thank you, everyone else thinks I'm crazy to rinse them first, so glad I'm not the only one....." She then proceeded to fill the sink, put in some detergent, and scrub all the dishes with a sponge before putting them in the dishwasher. I told her "Um, I've changed my mind..... I agree with everyone else, you ARE crazy - that's not "rinsing", that's WASHING them!!!"

Growing up whenever my mom had a bad day at work she'd come home and start rearranging the dishwasher. We'd scatter to the wind and hide.

Guilty! I cram as much in there as I possibly can..while still allowing enough space to get everything clean. I'm constantly moving and adjusting things.

I wash everything by hand but DH and I still have this fight! He wants all of us to wash (thoroughly rinse and clean) the dishes as we put them in the sink to be washed. Wasting water and the damn sewer fee that is higher than the cost of water! Really just put them in the sink and I will wash the whole bunch at once or turn on the hot water and use soap to finish the job and be done with it! Stop wasting water washing the dishes before I wash the dishes!

Guilty as charged. I rearrange if the other members of my household have committed the aggregious crime of messy loading and I can't fit the things I need to get in there. It's my real life Tetris game. My SIL and I have a longstanding joke about dishwasher loading. We both insist the other does it wrong. She insists on washing the dishes before to she puts them in because "the dishwasher doesn't get everything clean." But then she overloads it and stacks stuff on top of stuff. It's just wrong, whereas my way is just correct! Not to jinx it but her has leaked twice and ruined their kitchen floor and ours never has. Probably because of my mad loading skills. Oh my goodness ... this is my Mom! Love her dearly but I swear she is going to drive me nuts with the dishwasher. I never rinse anything (obviously scrape the food off) and I rarely have a dish come out that isn't spotless. But I also do not overload it. I have tried and tried and tried to explain this to her but it hasn't changed her ways yet This summer I just finally announced that things are no longer allowed to be rinsed before they go in the dishwasher because I pay the water bill and if they are going to be rinsed, then that person can just wash them because there is no point in using the dishwasher and getting charged twice for water for the same dish. haha - we'll see how long that one lasts My dh hates the way I load the dishwasher. I'm fairly haphazard about it, and he likes to try to fill every single millimeter of usable space. He absolutely reloads what I (or the girls) have loaded. I had to laugh at this comment, though. My mom washes her dishes in a sink full of soapy water before they go in the dishwasher. It frustrates me when I visit because she expects that we will do the same. Not happening. I am happy to rinse the dishes first (which is my usual procedure), but I just am not going to be washing them by hand before they go through the dishwasher.

I have been know to shuffle a few things about but only to get that one more dish or glass or whatever in so the bench is clear. For no other reason.

DH will put big pots and pans in the dishwasher. I would rather fit 5 smaller things in and just wash the one bigger item by hand.

I do it as the boys plonk things in on top of eachother, ensuring no prospect of the items actually being cleaned.

Yes, yes ,yes...guilty as charged, but I'm not a control freak in other aspects of my life, but my family are USELESS when it comes to loading the machine. I rinse the dishes (just a quick swill under the tap, not excessive). I always put pots and pans in. I run the dishwasher every day and if I didn't put the pans in, the space on the top would fill with cups before the bottom was filled, so I would rather do virtually no hand washing and bung everything in. My dishwasher is brilliant and you can pile stuff on top of each other and in wee spaces and there is rarely something that doesn't come out clean. If I left it to the family to do, there would be masses of unused space and inefficient use of space (small glasses where only tall glasses can go, tall glasses blocking where 2 rows of small things on top of each other can go etc). My dishwasher doesn't get smelly as I normally put it on every night after tea and empty it when I get up in the morning.
In addition, I very rarely damage anything in the dishwasher, as although I cram things in, I make sure fragile edges aren't knocking together and I put plastic cups, lids and colanders between breakable things. The family have no concept of this, and I wouldn't have an unchipped cup or bowl left if they did it.

I AM a control freak. I recognise this. I used to inwardly go berserk when the dishwasher was not stacked to my standards. My sister would take it upon herself as one of her 'tasks' to stack the washer when staying with us, even though she does not own one and did not have a clue. We would have long conversations as to what was right and what was wrong as I unloaded what she had done and re-did it. Then my working patterns changed and the dishwasher was dealt with in my absence, by DH and anyone else staying with us at the time. You know what? The dishes still got cleaned! I couldn't stress about if they were in the "right" place or not because I was at work and did not know how it had been filled. They still got cleaned and I discovered I much more enjoyed coming home to a clean kitchen than having dishes waiting for me because no one dared stack the washer. So now I can watch someone put something where I would not put it and I just leave it, unless the item is likely to be damaged where it is. Breathe. BTW, to all who rinse and/or wash their dishes before putting in the washer - I was told by an engineer not to do this as the powder/tablets/whatever you use to clean the dishes needs something to latch onto (i.e. food residue) to work effectively, otherwise it latches onto the top layer of china etc. and starts to damage the dishes over time. By food residue I don't mean the remains of someone's meal, just what is left on the plate after the remains have been scraped into the bin.

I get furious with DH because he never loads the dishwasher, although when he does do it ai re-arrange everything anyway. It is mind-boggling watching him load it...I can't fathom how on earth he thinks things will get clean the way he haphazardly loads it.

This is a timely post as I was coming today to ask, "how can two people unload the dishwasher almost every day for over 5 years, yet still not load it?"
Dh and I load the dishwasher the same way. Dds unload it nearly everyday. When they try to load the dishwasher, dishes are never where they are supposed to be.
Yesterday younger ds made brownies and loaded the dishwasher with her dishes (yay for actually attempting) but when I went to put dinner dishes in there , almost none would have fit if I didn't reload it.

I don't mind when my DH rearranges the dishwasher. What I *DO* mind is the condescending "lessons" he tries to impart to me on the correct way to load a dishwasher. Or the under the breath mumbling about how people don't know how to load it up. Since he rarely loads the dishwasher and starts it *maybe* once a month, he doesn't realize that I also rearrange the dishwasher before I start it. It takes us a couple of days to make a load so I put things in as we are done with them but I have no idea what dishes/glasses we will be using in the future to 100% perfectly load up everything from the start. There is always shuffling at the end! He expects me to have dishwasher ESP.

I can't stand it when large pots or pans are put in the dishwasher. It fills up fast enough as is. I'd rather save that space for all of the plates and glasses we go through. No food in my dishwasher either - not because of any smell issues (the dishwasher is run daily) I've just always rinsed first. And I'm happy to load the dishwasher any day - just don't ask me to unload it. That's one of my least favorite jobs

On the rare occasion that DH loads the dishwasher, he crams it so full that things don't get clean. For instance, he likes to put a cookie sheet or the flat frying pan (like for grilled cheese or bacon) in the front of the bottom rack, blocking the little floppy door where the soap comes from - so it can't flip open. He also likes to put tons of big things in the bottom crammed so tight that water can't get to the inside of them OR can't fully get to the stuff on the top rack (the water spinner thing on the bottom of the top rack is not functioning - probably from hitting too many things put on the bottom rack that are too big to go there :/)
On the also rare occasion that DS loads it, he loads it so sparsely that there is still crap in the sink that shouldn't be there. Once, he laid a cup down sideways on the top rack. Really?
I end up re-washing more than re-loading.

And I'm happy to load the dishwasher any day - just don't ask me to unload it. That's one of my least favorite jobs My kitchen isn't arranged conveniently to unload the dishwasher. Or, I didn't choose the correct cabinets in which to place the dishes. SO I have to unload onto the countertop, shut the dishwasher door, THEN reach over the dishwasher to put things away.

DH used to re-load the dishwasher every time I loaded it, so I stopped loading it. (BTW, I still think I'm a better dish-loader). This is my DH, I decided if it's so important to him why be concerned ? I leave the kitchen and find something else to clean, or relax. Don't get me started on packing a car trunk! I truly have better skills...

Confession: I am a rearranger and a pre-washer.
I used to nag the kids about loading the dishwasher correctly. Finally, life got in the way, I said "screw it" and let them have at it.
Interestingly enough, the kids started complaining at each other "who loaded this? Come look at this mess you left! You can't just jam stuff in here, you have to put it like this. You can't put things in without rinsing them! That's just gross and they don't get clean!"
It was fun to hear my words coming out of their mouth. Now my DD is as vigilant as me about making sure dishes are properly washed off before loading.

I don't do this because my husband does the dishes and i would like him to continue. We both agree that they require a light washing before going into the machine. I have never met a dishwasher that doesn't require that. I have been to a number of people's houses who insist that their dishwashers get the dishes clean without washing first, and been grossed or by some leftover crap on a dish or two. Particularly on utensils.
