the people who do this.
Are they control freaks? Sincere members of the household who only strive for a more efficient use of the dishwasher's function?
Or something else?
Anyone want to 'fess up?

Just really hoping I can fit one more thing in so I don't have to wash it by hand.

I do it but I live with people who don't know how to load a dishwasher. If I ran the washer the way it was loaded, on those rare occasions that they actually do put it in the washer, I would deb running a half full washer and dishes might not get cleaned because of the angles they were placed. My daughter's boyfriend told me his mom does the same thing haha

I do it - I have noticed that glasses put in the corners of the dishwasher do not get as clean as they should, and I have asked dh not to put his glass in the corner. there is usually room that we don't need to have things in the corners, so I usually move the glass to a better position. dh will remember not to put it there for a day or two, then he forgets....

Guilty as charged. I rearrange if the other members of my household have committed the aggregious crime of messy loading and I can't fit the things I need to get in there. It's my real life Tetris game. My SIL and I have a longstanding joke about dishwasher loading. We both insist the other does it wrong. She insists on washing the dishes before to she puts them in because "the dishwasher doesn't get everything clean." But then she overloads it and stacks stuff on top of stuff. It's just wrong, whereas my way is just correct! Not to jinx it but her has leaked twice and ruined their kitchen floor and ours never has. Probably because of my mad loading skills.

I actually have a story about this very subject. We renovated our kitchen about 4 years ago. We got a wonderful new dishwasher. The very first night it was working my dh told me I wasn't loading it right. Now I have been loading the dishwasher for many, many years and I believe I know how to do it. He told me that the new one had to be loaded "just so". I said why don't you show me. I haven't loaded it since. Nor emptied it. I would label him a "control freak". Win-win for both of us.

DH used to re-load the dishwasher every time I loaded it, so I stopped loading it. (BTW, I still think I'm a better dish-loader).

Oh my goodness ... this is my Mom! Love her dearly but I swear she is going to drive me nuts with the dishwasher. I never rinse anything (obviously scrape the food off) and I rarely have a dish come out that isn't spotless. But I also do not overload it. I have tried and tried and tried to explain this to her but it hasn't changed her ways yet This summer I just finally announced that things are no longer allowed to be rinsed before they go in the dishwasher because I pay the water bill and if they are going to be rinsed, then that person can just wash them because there is no point in using the dishwasher and getting charged twice for water for the same dish. haha - we'll see how long that one lasts

Yes, I do it. Not all the time, though. Sometimes moving one dish will enable me to get another dish in. Sometimes, my sons have loaded the dishwasher and things aren't loaded very efficiently.

I'll admit to being a control freak. I re-arrange all the time. I've given up trying to get anyone else to fold the towels correctly, though.

dd has been told by the maintenance crew at her apartment complex that she doesn't know how to load her dishwasher and that is why it won't clean the dishes - but that doesn't explain why when she does load it how they tell her, it still doesn't clean....or that the soap is not dissolved.

I rearrange if I can fit new dirty dishes in. I think this makes sense. You don't know what kind of dishes might be dirtied up before the dishwasher is run, so some movement makes sense.
My husband rearranges just to rearrange to his "system". It drives me insane & has led to him being on pretty much permanent dish duty after dinner so that I don't get annoyed by it.

Trust me the last thing it's about in my house is control. It's about the fact that my DH likes to put big pots in the bottom that block the water from freely moving through the dishwasher. Nothing gets clean when it's all crammed in there and overlapping. He also can't quite grasp that if you put some of the very tall glasses we have in certain spots on the top rack, the bar that swings around will continually clip the side of the glass for the whole cycle thereby driving me nuts with the noise. I would gladly never open the door after it was loaded until the cycle was done if just once I didn't have to re-wash half of it a second time.

I would say I'm both a "control freak" and like to use the dishwasher as efficiently as possible. Add to that, our dishwasher SUCKS (we rent), so I have to make sure everything is scrubbed and placed correctly, or it will come out dirty...yuck!

I love the stories of how the control freak ended up with the chore!
I've been known to make 'adjustments'.. . pretty much daily.

oh hell yes. I don't allow other people to load my dishwasher, and I don't attempt to load other people's dishwashers. Actually, I let them if they insist, but I explain that I WILL be rearranging as soon as their back is turned. My sister is the same way (my annoying aunt called her controlling when she told her to stay out of the damned dishwasher) and so was our grandmother. Apparently the gene skipped a generation. ETA I also scrub everything clean (no soap, just water & sponge or cloth) before it goes in the dishwasher. Shut up, I'm not interested in hearing about it. My sister won't let me rinse dishes at her house because she says I waste water. I might.

I will willingly reload after my kids load it. I have one child who can not figure out how to stand the plates up using the prongs. He seriously wants to lay them flat in the rack. Then he puts more on top. Flat. Not kidding. Others don't make good use of the space. I will admit that when I get control freaky enough to reload the dishwasher, they have to stand there and watch me do it so they can learn. They get a lecture at the same time. It usually fixes the bad loading issues pretty quickly. they will do anything, even doing the job properly, to avoid the annoyed mom lecture.

I'm that way but it's a non-issue now. I live alone and I'm the only one loading it. It gets done right the first time

My husband does it because I apparently crowd the lower section. I'd just as soon stop dealing with the dishwasher altogether because it is my most loathed chore.

I admit, I'm a bit of a control freak. I always re load the bowls on top...the kids don't seem to realize/care that the prongs want the bowls to be loaded 1/2 towards the front and 1/2 towards the back, and they just try to wedge and angle them in however they can. I also made the mistake of telling my DS that I personally prefer the plates in the bottom to be placed right to left.....guess how he loads them!

Sometimes it takes 2-3 days to have a full load and those dirty dishes can start smelling after awhile. Honestly though I did it when I did run my dishwasher every day

I said my MIL was rude. But now I have a washer that benefits from planning. Maybe she wasn't the control freak I thought she was .

I have my kids take turns loading and unloading.
The rule is that anything that doesn't fit in the dishwasher is handwashed by the loader. The kids have gotten pretty good at making things fit.
But there's another rule, too. If they cram the dishes in to the point that something doesn't get clean, that also gets washed by hand. It only takes a couple of times having to wash by hand, then they get it.

Um you must not have meet my children. Their goal is to fill the dishwasher with as few of dishes as possible so they can get done loading faster. My goal is to fit as many in as will allow yet still be clean. Jen

No reloading here. I wash all mine by hand. Mostly because these days I am the only one eating and it could takes days to have enough dishes in there to justify running the silly thing. It is easier, faster and less smelly if I wash as I go.

Personally, I believe there is a right way (ahem, my way) and a wrong way to load a dishwasher. But I'm also practical enough to take help where I can get it. So I try to just leave it as it's been done unless it's something really bad.

I am a reloader. Everyone else in the house throws them in willy nilly and if I leave them I end up with a bunch that don't get clean. I am thinking of adding expert dishwasher loader to my résumé, it seems like a scarce skill to have!
