I feel like I have lost my best friend but it is only my very ancient Gateway laptop It has had a virus for awhile now and so I knew it's days were numbered In the past couple of days it will only let me on for about 5-10 minutes at a time before shutting down ... NOT I think that dh realizes that a new laptop is in the cards for me this week ... until then, I'm using his Anyone else had a similar experience?

Not quite but im afraid our desktop is on its way out. I've only been using it for essentials like paying bills. I'm Afraid of it crashing and losing precious pictures and important documents.
Just this week I came to the conclusion that I need to buy a new computer and transfer the things I need to keep onto it BEFORE something goes wrong. I just don't know whether to get a desktop or laptop.

I have a laptop that is broken in every way and beyond repair. I cannot make myself throw it away! I'm the complete opposite of a hoarder and hate clutter. I usually have no issue with getting rid of something useless. Like you said, it's like a friend...so many memories.

My desktop is in the shop right now. Apparently the windows 10 updates are causing some major issues. I have all my photography backed up, but I'd have to reedit a bunch of stuff and that'd be a huge PITA.

Gateway! wow, I haven't heard that name for computers in some time. I had a friend who worked for then and I just remember the computers came in cool black/white spotted cow boxes. that was them right? those boxes were sure great for brand recognition.

Ugh, yep same boat. My desktop is biting the dust. I'm take online classes so i'm less than a week from completing this one. I asked dh to hit the computer shop tomorrow and see what they had available and get me in line to have my stuff transferred.
Facebook and twitter both almost always crash it. Luckily I have an ipad to get my fix, lol.

jenjie if you don't feel like dealing with buying a new computer just yet, you could go buy an external hard drive and transfer your important stuff for peace of mind. They are easily available at Walmart, targe, office stores etc.

Gateway is still around, though they closed their stores in 2004. I worked for their training division back in the day; unfortunately, the trainers were all in the stores.
My laptop is pretty much toast now. I think I bought it in 2007. I make sure I keep all the important stuff backed up, and I only turn it on when I really need it. I have literally been debating for a year whether I need a new computer or not. I am in front of a computer all day, so this is just for personal use in the evenings/weekends. I use the iPad most of the time, and DD does pretty much everything online now. She has a laptop with intermittent power issues, but she'll be issued a MacBook next school year.
