DS has been given the green light to go beyond the BRAT diet but keep it simple. He wanted popcorn so I thought it would be a good time to try microwaving it in a bowl. I used this bowl from amazon along with this lid (note-I only paid $1.97 for this lid-no idea why it's so high here) plus 1/4 cup of Just Poppin' brand movie style popcorn kernels. No oil or butter or anything. I set the timer at 5 minutes because I wasn't sure how long it would take. I stopped it at 2.5 minutes but there were still quite a few unpopped kernels so it might have been okay for another 15-30 seconds. The popcorn is perfect! My son had his plain and I sprayed some Winona Pure brand butter flavored spray on mine and some popcorn salt. We quit using microwave popcorn in the bags a couple of years ago and also don't want to use brown paper bags in the microwave. We've been using an air popper but this is a simpler method for the kids to make their own.

Do you know the wattage of your microwave? I'd like to try it your way but don't want to set anything on fire if mine is higher than yours. TIA.

Wow! I'd heard of people using brown paper bags and a teaspoon of oil, but never just a bowl and a lid! Gotta try this...

I've been doing the brown bag but no oil. No popcorn here until DS1 gets his braces off. He has said he wants gum and popcorn as soon as they come off.

It's a Panasonic and is 1200 watts. I used 100% power.

Did the glass bowl get very hot? We have the popcorn popper bowl (also sold on Amazon) and while it gets quite warm I can still handle it coming out of the microwave. As long as it works it's all good!

I use 1/3 c. kernels in a brown paper bag for approx. 2:30. Turns out great!

I used my ove gloves to get the glass bowl out. It seemed pretty hot. I wouldn't try it bare-handed.
I used to have one of the plastic ones. It cracked after about a year and I never replaced it. It did work really well though. I'm trying to limit plastics in the microwave (other than the lid, which is plastic but has limited contact with food).

I've seen directions that call for using a glass bowl and a heat proof dinner plate as a lid. Haven't tried it yet.

We tried it with a dinner plate a few months ago. It worked fine but I didn't keep track of the time and we didn't do it again until today.
