My 2 children qualified for CHIP until earlier this year when the ACA changed the way income was added (my teens part-time job now counted towards our income and bumped us up just enough to no longer qualify for subsidized pay). We changed to full pay because it was still $100 cheaper than employer plan for better coverage. We were able to do this because DH's insurance was not considered "affordable".
I just received a phone call today that because of changes from the ACA, the full pay option is now going from $300 a month for 2 kids to $600 a month starting in Sept. for coverage beginning in Oct. There is NO way that we can pay an extra $300 a month. We can afford the extra $100 a month to add them to DH's plan because he just got a small raise that would cover it.
My question is will this be considered a qualifying event for a special enrollment to add them to his plan? His plans regular open enrollment is next April. I hate for them to be uninsured for that long, but we would be almost $150 a month short if we had to pay the $600, so we just can't do it without borrowing from my parents. Which I really do not want to do.

If this is the open enrollment period for your kids' plan, then, yes, it is a qualifying event. I don't know all the ins and outs of ACA, but with regular plans, the rates only increase at open enrollment.

Thanks. I have to wait until Monday to talk to HR and I am stressing. Literally since the first day of summer, it's been one thing after another. I tend to stress for a day or 2 and then give it to God. Self-pay is changing to a completely different plan, because they can no longer keep them together, so I am hoping that makes it a qualify. Thankfully, they were just at the dentist and my youngest had her physical. Now I need to get my oldest his physical and one last visit to his specialist before we lose coverage.

Maybe. Before ACA I think loss of insurance was a qualifying event outside open enrollment. Best to call but I think there is hope

Maybe. Before ACA I think loss of insurance was a qualifying event outside open enrollment. Best to call but I think there is hope That has not changed. Loss of coverage, marriage, divorce, birth of a child are all qualifying events.
