I was on Meloxicam (generic) for about 6-8 months. I have OA in my knees. It helped enough that I didn't to go a day without it. However my DD (a pharmacist) suggested that I try extra strength tylenol to see if it would work since I was having some stomach problems with Meloxicam. I only take it twice a day and it helps more than the Meloxicam ever did. I'm not pain free and some days are worse than others. I'm at a phase 3 OA and will need replacements in the future. I was just at the knee doctor this week and he still wants to hold off on arthritis meds if I can handle it.

I appreciate everyones' responses from this post I made a while back I just wanted to send ((( Hugs )))) to all with chronic pain, and say that yesterday, as my hip, foot, and now WRIST hurt SO much, I was starting to wonder how much longer I could handle the CONSTANT pain.......Still counting my blessings every day, STILL have a sense of humor, STILL try to be as active as possible, but I am DONE with being in pain ALL. THE. TIME. I won't go into details of WHY taking NSAIDs & other meds regularly is more of a risk for me than some others, but I am now willing to accept the risks.....It's either that, or I feel like the only other choice is taking shots of tequila through the day......LOL.....I'm kidding----but, yesterday, I had HAD IT !!!! The fact that my wrist even hurts that I can barely sign my NAME I lifted a large bowl filled with salad and it hurt SO much, I almost dropped it !?!?! Oh HELL NO!!!! !! I am now asking (begging!) my doc to Rx me SOMETHING---whether it's Mobic, Celebrex, maybe a morphine drip....whatever....Risks, smisshkkkks!!! I'm sorry you are dealing with chronic pain. I have chronic pain from a spinal surgery. In the last ten years, I have tried so many different drugs to mitigate the pain. I also have fibromyalgia, which does not respond to traditional pain medications, so getting relief from both has been quite a challenge. Add to this that I have had reactions to some of the medications that were totally minimizing the fibro pain, and I couldn't take them any longer. I would retain fluids to the point of struggling to breathe and walk from all the swelling. I was finally put on morphine, and it has given me my life back. I take a time released pill every 12 hours, and I feel so much better! I have Vicodin and Mobic that I can take when the pain isn't being handled by the morphine. I was concerned about side effects of long term use and my doctor says morphine does not damage your liver or kidneys at all. I am monitored every 3 months to check liver, kidney, and various other things to make sure all is going well. I just wanted to mention the time release morphine pills as a possible alternative to you and anyone else that suffers from chronic pain. Honestly, it has been the only medication that gave me adequate relief without the possibility of organ damage. I will be on this for the rest of my life, I watched my father's kidneys fail to where he was on at home dialysis for the last year of his life and that is something that I do not want in my future. You may want to ask your doctor if it is an option for you. Oh, and I don't have any strange feelings when on this. No drugged feelings at all! I am alert and sharp (except when the fibro fills my brain with pudding and I can't think fast enough or remember things). For me, it has truly been life altering. Good luck!

I use Celebrex because another NSAID stopped working for me. It is a huge help with my Ankylosing Spondylitis.
DH takes mobic for osteoarthritis pain and it is very helpful to him as well. So many in my family has some sort of joint pain so we all rely on our anti-inflammatory medicines.
You may need Prilosec with it for your stomach.

Mobic contributed to a bout of microscopic colitis so I had to quit taking it even though it worked very well. *sigh*

I have 2 friends that take Mobic, and they are thrilled with the pain relief! I'm happy for them, and I've considered asking my doc for an RX ; however, I'm concerned about the long-term risks of ALL NSAIDS! My hip & foot pain are so bad sometimes---I do stretches, ice, and heat, and whirpool baths with lotsa Epsom salts---and the times I can't stand it anymore, I'll take 4 Motrin (rarely) .....All of this helps, l, but sometimes I wish I could live on strong Narcotics....(forget NSAIDs...gimme the serrrrious stuff---just kidding!!!) just to be totally pain free for a day!!! I'm going to be giving PT another try, too, and wearing a boot for my foot issues, I pray it works this time!!! What's your experience? Are you and/or your doctor concerned about long-term use? I recently saw my rheumetologist because the Nabumetome (sp?) that I had been on for the past year had become less than adequate for the swelling and pain in my knees and foot. She prescribed Sulindac twice a day as a replacement. My Primary had just ordered a lot of bloodwork done and one of the results that had come back wonky was my Vitamin D. The acceptable level is 20 or above and mine was <4; to put that in perspective, when my DH's VitD was at 9, he sat down on the couch and cried because he just didn't have the energy to get up the stairs to bed. The rheumetologist told me that low VitD levels can make you feel pain more intensely, along with all the other side effects I was already familiar with. She immediately put me on the once a week, 50,000 units capsules and said that it would take a bit, but I should start finding my medications becoming more effective. i am seeing the podiatrist next week to see if he can recommend something besides booting for my heel pain. In all honesty, I am not expecting much from him. When I saw him last year, he wouldn't let me show him where the pain was, he just declared I had planters whatever and ordered me a boot. I had had PF, so I knew what that pain felt like but the pain I was seeing him for was something completely different. It's in the upper heel itself and may be something similar to Haglund's Deformity or acute inflammation due to a large heel spur in that area. I am tempted to take a marker and circle the area, just to make sure he understands where I am pointing at. lol Anyway, I use omnerprazole (sp?) on those occasions when I neglect to take my medicine correctly, with food, and my stomach gets in a mess. I take it for at least 30 days after I start it and by the end of the month, my stomach is so much better. I actually started taking the meds I am taking because the OTC NSAIDs had done such a number on my stomach the dr's were concerned I might have done some damage. I take a lot fewer pills with the prescription NSAIDS. And I seldom have to add a pain medication to the mix. Marcy

I take Celebrex. The risks of not controlling inflammation are worse than the risks of taking NSAIDS for my Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. I have taken NSAIDS since I was a teen. I do have GERD because of it.

Since I originally posted this, my arthritis pain has worsened, despite losing some weight, stretching, swimming in the wonnnnderful pool at the Y, massage, heat and cold pads, and also started taking 4 Motrin almost every day despite the risks, blahh blahhh blahhhhh....
I am SO happy to say that after making me wait, doing lots of labwork and consulting my GI doc, my primary doc has FINALLY called in an RX for Mobic and I'm picking it up first thing in the morning. Obviously, we all know meds affect everyone differently .....but I have read WAY more positive stories than negative!!!!! I hope / pray I can have some relief....and continue to pray for all of you who suffer chronic pain.
I am SO tired of barely being able to walk, and/or SOME days, I can barely write !!!! And I and sooo disappointed that even one of the BEST exercises for arthritis-----------swimming -----with NO WEIGHT BEARING causes me pain!!!! If Mobic doesn't work for me, I will ask for other meds until the right one is found !!!!

I take voltaren, and have also tried the voltaren gel. i was on mobic, but it didn't do much for the pain. i had a series of three spinal injections and they worked for a while, but now iam back to square one. I was prescribed Duexis, which the nurse practitioner said was 800mg motrin, and famoditine combined. I took the script to the pharmacy, and they said it was not instock, they would order it for me and cautioned me that is was very expensive. When I went back to pick it up, it didn't cost me anything, as i had met my out-of-pocket maximum for the year, but i was in shock when I realized it was $1519.00 for 90 pills....so that's the last time for that, 800mg motrin, (generic) and a generic famoditine probably cost no more than $20.00 for 90 pills.

Mommythree....does the Volatran help? Is your pain only in your spine? (I'm asking since you mentioned Spinal injections). WHOA on the cost of that med !!!!!!
Well, I'm on day five of Mobic, and it's done nothing for my pain. It was prescribed by my Primary doc; but I'm seeing my Orthopedist on Monday, and will ask him if I can try something else.
(P.S...I was happily shocked that the co-pay for my (generic of Mobic is called 'Meloxicam' ) was only $4.28 ----Less than ANY med I've ever had!!!! Too bad it's not working for me!

Patter....maybe my doc can put me on that Is your pain due to arthritis & bursitis like mine? I'm so happy for you to have relief! . (But what a bummer that you suffer migraines...!!!!) I take it for my plantar faciitis, arthritis, and bursitis. Yep, all of those things. I am one hot mess. LOL! Anyway, what does suck about it is that I can no longer take my migraine meds but thankfully I only get that maybe once a month or less. I am sure there is something else they could put me on for my migraines but I haven't been to the doc to ask. I usually try to relieve it with an ice pack, sleep, and a dark room. I would much rather be pain free most days than worry about my migraines right now.

Thanks, Patter! I'm a hot mess lately, too!!!! I'm going to discuss your med with my ortho on Monday! P.S....I don't know if you believe in and/or tried chiropractic, but after trying MANY unsuccessful things, 2 friends of ours suffered terrrible migraines before getting regular adjustments. One of them also started eating Paleo & rarely gets migraines anymore.....she notices that when she goes off of the Paleo food, her migraines come back, but still RARELY as long as she keeps going to her chiropractor. The other one didn't change his diet, and he's had great relief from chiropractic. He says he never migraines anymore! I CHERISH the *rare* days that I can walk, swim, bend over, and write without pain !!!! I had a day like that yesterday! Pain level was a 1/10. Did nothing different today, but the pain is back to a 5/10 when I walk or write! I reallllly need to get off my phone & rest my poor wrist & thumb !!!!

For those who said Mobic didn't help AND for those of you that it helped / you're still taking it....how long dId you take it before you decided either way?
I'm asking because I've taken it for about 9 days now, and there are no changes in my pain at all. I'm wondering if I need to give it more time? Thanks!

I went ahead and stopped taking the Mobic after giving it 2 weeks...but I'd still like to hear others' experiences with ANY long-term pain meds!
P.S.....My GI doc just prescribed me daily Prilosec, saying it would protect my stomach from daily NSAID use. Just tonight on the news, they reported some patients' kidney function are being badly compromised from many of the proton pump inhibitors (Prilosec, Nexium, Prevacid)...
A doctor from ' Cleavland Clinic' said DIET alone can resolve heartburn & gastric reflux; (and I know diet can help MANY health issues!!!!) It's just too bad that's NOT the reason I'm taking Prilosec.
This is just another reason I'm fearful of relying on ANY medications....but being in pain sucks, too!

My rheumatologist has me on Duexis twice a day for joint pain and inflammation. I've had GI problems in the past so it's the only NSAID she feels comfortable giving me. Luckily my insurance covered it because it is newer and only brand name. I take a Medrol dose pack (steroids) when things get bad and I will be starting a lupus drug soon but the Duexis was helpful for the last two years. Maybe you could see if your insurance would cover it? I'm sorry you are still in so much pain! Chronic pain is the worst, isn't it? Hugs!!

Wanted to say THANK YOU, everyone all your support & info!!!! (((hugs))) to all of you! I went to my regular doc again yesterday for other stuff, & to discuss how the Mobic didn't help & ask if he thought Voltaren gel might help. ( I said "some people on one of my favorite websites (i.e. you gals! ) said it helped them a lot "). He sent the RX for pills AND gel....I'll be picking it up today...looking forward to seeing if it helps Since the pain in my wrist / thumb has worsened, he wants me to see a rheumotologist. Thankfully, the steroid injection for the OSTEOarthritis / bursitis in my hip has taken away my pain for TWO WEEKS now !!!! QUESTION *****Even though everything I've read says I do NOT have the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, and I doubt he's read my MRIs like my ortho docs have----would YOU still go to a rheumatologist just to be sure? I really don't wanna waste time / fuel / co-pays for a specialist that I don't think I need....

Glad to read your update. I pray the meds work. My bursitis is so horrific now, I am afraid I am going to have to go in. I can't sit, walk, lay down, anything without pain. I am SO scared of an injection but glad it is helping you! Let us know what you think of Voltaren after you try it. I found it worked fairly quickly!

Patter ----WOW, I am SO sorry to hear your pain is THAT bad....mine has been VERY bad at times, but NOT as horrible as yours!!! (( hugs )) I totalllly understand how frightened you are, and I'm sorry about that, too! I did NOT have that fear as you did, but I completely empathise. I WAS a bit nervous, for sure, but I didn't want to admit it to myself....LOL....instead, the only way I could tell how nervous I ACTUALLY was was the way I over-chatted and acted "weird" when the very nice radiology techs were asking me all the questions they need to ask , AND, ...LOL....I was overly weird and nervous about asking if I needed to take ALL of my clothes off when she gave me the gown to me. (P.S....LOL....I'm not a complete idiiot, but I was nervous-----so, even though I knew the injection would be in my HIP, I knew the pants/ undies had to be off, (I it's a sterile procedure!) but wasn't sure about top and bra (the top COULD get in the way, I figured!) so I just took it alllll off.... I PROMISE you it only hurt for a few SECONDS!!! Also, ask if the tech can hold your hand, if that would comfort you! My sweet tech patted my shoulder gently while the doc was injecting the numbing agent, and I found it very comforting. Once he injects the steroid, yes---it was uncomfortable, but SO BRIEF !!!! IF it had taken longer, yes----it would've been harder, but I was THRILLED and AMAZED when he said "all done!" I'm sending you ((( hugs ))) and prayers that you'll get relief !!!

Patter .....I went back and read all your responses to see WHICH joint(s) you're considering an injection in, and it's not in your posts, BUT....I wanted to also ask---how are your migraines lately? Ugh, I also have SO MUCH empathy for migraine sufferers-----SO thankful I don't have them!!! (I DO get bad sinus headaches with weather changes, *sometimes* but I know they're NOTHING like a migraine!!!) I'm also happy the difulcoa ( ) ....LOL (generic for Volatran) has helped you, but obviously with your most recent post, if you can't walk, lie down, or sit, that's horrible! I'm curious--- wa it helping with your FOOT (the plantar facitiis) AND your other joint issues? Where exactly is your bursitis? Does ICE or HEAT ever help? Well, I did try the Voltaren gel on my poor wrist/ thumb, and hip the other day, but it didn't do much. What has REALLY helped my wrist/ thumb pain is REST, bracing, and alternating ice and heat. I'm assuming the HUGE culprit is my cell, so right now I'm on my laptop, AND I try not to use my thumb when typing. I'm also trying to pretend my wrist is broken and just not use it at all. I pray if you end up getting a steroid injection, it will HELP you---!! We all know they do NOT always work on everyone, and/or they might work for a week, a month.....up to a YEAR !!! I'm keeping my hopes low, but so far, my hip has been PAIN FREE for 2+ weeks!!!!! My only issue now is it still feels as though it's going to "give out" sometimes, so I still walk verrry carefully. ***Total overshare alert------**** Back to my extreme wrist/ thumb pain...... As I sad, I've been pretending it's broken to avoid using it......the rest REALLY helps! And SOMEtimes, doing tasks with my other hand is kinda humorous...like SLICING stuff to cook....LOL! BUT......the other day, I was struck with diarrhea (yipppeee!!!) .......I got impatient trying to clean myself / change clothes 3 times, etc.... with my non-dominant hand and just ripped the damn brace off and utitlized my "bad" hand for the rest of the day....... !!!! Kudos to people who have to adapt to doing everything with their non-dominant hand.....it is NOT easy!

I was on NSAIDs daily for about 12 years in my teens/20s due to arthritis. Yes, there are side effects but I didn't experience any. I would say if the pain is that bad you should investigate something else.
Depends what the issue is of course, but one friend of mine who has some sort of arthritis and has been reluctant to take NSAIDs has ended up with damage to several joints because the inflammation was not properly controlled.
ETA If you're looking for something that's more 'natural' I can recommend Capsaicin Cream. The active ingredient is what's found in chillis. It's applied topically and has been found (at lease in some cases) to decrease pain. Works for osteoarthritis, bursitis etc.

Good morning....I just wanna send LOTS & LOTS of ((( hugs ))) to those with unrelenting pain! I don't know if feeling like there's no hope is the same as self pity---which I try to avoid !!!!! ---but I'm having one of those rare mornings where I am losing hope The Mobic nor the Volatran helped....I've cleaned up my diet--that hasn't helped. Did some wonderful exercise yesterday, but was soooo achey a few hours later! . On a positive note, I AM getting some hip relief from Absorbine Jr. and my massaging heating pad. For my wrist & thumb, I'm wearing a brace & icing it....which is also a nice help; but yesterday, it was VERY disheartening not to be able to open my doggies' cans of food, use my food processor, and----WHOA! I couldn't crack ice trays, even after running hot water over them....I was sadly shocked and said out loud to myself "are you KIDDING me?!? I can't even get ice now ?!?!" again....((( hugs ))) to all of you! I realize manyyy people have it WAY worse than me !!!!!
