I'd love to see the documentary "Finding Vivian Maier"----from the youtube clip I saw, she took tonsss and tonnnssss of amazing photos, but (I think?) she only had negatives (thousandsss!), which have since been developed....the ones I saw are the kinds of photos I LOVE---black and white, artsy, taken with a great eye.... We have Netflix streaming, and I just checked---it's only avail. on DVD ALthoughhh, while perusing youtube, it looks like you can see most of it there..... Edited to add a linky: www.findingvivianmaier.com

I purchased the documentary from iTunes. The entire family really enjoyed it--but we love documentaries! She was one "interesting" character!

I watched it in bits and pcs when it ran on HBO. It was interesting the way the person who bought/found all the negatives and pictures also had all of her "stuff" and went back to talk to people to get the story.
I also loved seeing the pictures. I love black and white.

I saw an exhibit of hers 2 years ago (I guess authorized by the person who has the negatives?). Isn't there a lawsuit by a very distant relative of hers in France who is claiming the rights to them as her only relative? I thought I heard that and the lawsuit is keeping the current owner of negatives to put on any more exhibitions.

Sockmonkey....LOL! Okay, next question-----are Maloof and his wife photographers? I don't remember if this was in the doc or if I read it somewhere else, but Maloof's family were junkers and pickers. I don't think he's a photographer but I think he knew he had something because of his years of experience. I had the pleasure of seeing a 2012 exhibit of her photos and artifacts from her life at the Greenberg Gallery in NYC. It was fascinating. I think her image shot in Miami of a woman in a pouffy white dress walking away from the camera toward a 1950s car with tail fins is the most glamorous and haunting thing I've ever seen. Since her prints are out of my price range, I printed this image out and framed it.

Yes I have heard of her, and I am pretty sure I learned about her here on a thread someone posted a little while ago.

I saw the documentary when it was on HBO earlier this year, and it fascinated me. She did some amazing work. But such an enigma. I will check out the BBC show as well, thanks for sharing.

I saw the documentary on HBO and it was fascinating.
I thought it was interesting that she spent so much money and went to so much trouble to have her pictures printed overseas. It must have been a huge expense for someone who lived on such a tight budget.
I also thought it was interesting how she was so willing to take pictures under any circumstances to get a great shot. If I remember correctly, one of the boys she cared for said his friend was hit by a car and she took pictures the whole time the boy was lying in the street and being cared for by the emergency personnel. I just can't imagine doing that if some kid I knew had been hit by a car and the kids I was caring for had witnessed it, but her ability to stay so detached was probably the reason she got such great shots.
