A friend said her daughter broker her arm. The Dr. put in her a soft cast for a week and said she would then get a hard cast. He took the soft cast off and said he was not going to put the hard cast on because it might harm her range of motion later on.
The Dr. said she should do therapy and it will be fine. Mom is pretty upset by this and is thinking of going to a different Dr. on Monday.
Has anyone ever had experience like this? It does sound a bit strange to me.
Quick Update - They were seeing and orthopedist who told them to not wrap it and do physical therapy. However, Mom did not like him so she talked to her herbalist. The herbalist said they should wrap it, gave (sold) her a bunch of supplements to heal the bone from the inside out and suggested some essential oils to rub on the arm. Daughter is still feeling some pain, but they have supplements for that also. Mom has no trust in Drs. I pray her daughter heals quickly and the pain goes down fast.

My daughter broke her arm and had to have surgery. She had a soft cast and then just a brace. I was surprised too. I was sure she would get a hard cast.

Yes, have heard of this. Depends on where the break is, the degree of the break, if there was surgery? growth plate involvement, etc. You need more details. Was it an Ortho Dr that saw her?

Yes. DS broke his wrist on the last day of school. We saw an orthopedist and he recommended a brace that was adjustable and removable for showering and the pool...X-rays showed it has healed up nicely.
No cast. I was surprised.

I was shocked when ds broke his thumb a number of years ago. MD looked at me and asked whether I wanted him in a brace or cast. I was very surprised by the question, choose cast and was glad I did. He never sat still, hated the cast and would have never kept a brace on. He later had a fracture in his foot and was trying to bargain with me to be out of the boot sooner than he should have been

I fracrured my arm at the elbow and the orthopedist had me wear a neoprene brace. It healed up very well.

So glad to hear that the Dr knows what they are doing. I know some breaks there really is not much you can do.
Mom does not like Drs and I think she feels they have no idea what they are doing.

DH has a co worker that broke her arm but never got a hard cast. He was doubtful about the whole thing but it does happen.

D'S had a buckle fracture last fall. He had a brace that velcroed on. He could take it off to shower and for me to wash it every few days. He wore it for 3 weeks and was fine.

I broke my arm several years ago and never had a cast. I wore a sling for about a month, had to go to PT and after about six weeks I had no restrictions. I think it completely depends on where the fracture is and what kind of fracture it is. I had a spiral fracture of my radial head, just below the elbow.

There is research evidence that some breaks heal better with a little bit of movement, rather than complete immobilization. The mom can try a different doctor if she wants to, but not casting isn't unheard of depending on the type of break.

My mom broke her wrist earlier this year and she had a soft cast and brace, no hard cast.

I fell down a couple of stairs while on vacation at the end of June. X-rays showed a chip/break in the elbow. The walk-in clinic put a soft cast on my arm and told me to make an appointment with the orthopedist ASAP. After nearly a week of needing help with putting on my bra (brother-in-law had to do it - LOL) and not being able to wash my hair, I decided I was done with the stupid cast. I took it off. Never went to the Orthopedist either. I had to baby my arm for weeks - and its still tender sometimes, but I'm just fine. Of course I'm too old to worry about growth plates and stuff like that.
I hope your daughter feels better soon.

When I fractured my arm/elbow the first time, I was put in a splint for a week. The splint was removed for bathing. After a week, they took the splint away because of the range of motion issue. I was told that I could only have the splint for a week because you can permanently lose range of motion in the elbow. For that reason I never had a cast of any kind. I healed up just fine.
I fractured it for the second time a few weeks ago. It was not until my follow-up x-rays the following week that the fracture was found. The soft tissue inflammation obscured it on the first set of x-rays. At that point I was given a sling. No splints, braces or casts. I was given permission to try using the sling less about 10 days ago. I find that I overuse that arm when I do not use the sling. I slip my arm out a lot, but it does slow me down.

Yes, I'm not sure why this is appropriate treatment in some cases... maybe depends on the particular case. This happened to me when I broke my wrist.

Depends on where the break is.
Niece broke her arm straight in half and had only a sling. Muscles fuse together quickly at a young age. Dh broke his arm 2 weeks ago and no cast. It can ruin range of motion. He wore a sling for 4 days and then was told to move his arm more. He wears the sling in evenings to rest it.

a couple days ago, a coworker's wife was riding her bike on a path, rang her bell to signal a jogger she was passing. he was wearing headphones and didn't hear, and as luck would have it turned right at that moment and they collided. he was fine, but she broke BOTH arms! she's in her 50s, has them both in slings and her husband says doc isn't planning on casting. first I had heard of that too!

Yeah, I would trust an orthopedic surgeon over an herbalist.

Yeah, I would trust an orthopedic surgeon over an herbalist. But why? Everyone knows rubbing pesto on a fracture causes the bone to knit and heal. They were seeing and orthopedist who told them to not wrap it and do physical therapy. However, Mom did not like him so she talked to her herbalist. The herbalist said they should wrap it, gave (sold) her a bunch of supplements to heal the bone from the inside out and suggested some essential oils to rub on the arm. As a physician, former surgeon, I have no words. Just.....none. Wow.

Wow. Maybe I should be in the herbalist field and and not the medical field.
Your friend sounds like a wackadoo.

Does this remind anyone else of the scene in Harry Potter when Professor Gilderoy Lockhart tried to heal Harry's broken bone after a quidditch match? Egads.

At least the herbalist treatment shouldn't hurt the girl. Scary and weird!

Oh no. Chances are her dd will loose some mobility if she doesn't follow the dr's orders. They've to,d her what to do for a reason. I'm sure it won't be the end of the world.

At least the herbalist treatment shouldn't hurt the girl. Scary and weird! Yes, it can hurt the girl. Essential oils directly on the skin can hurt her. In addition, ignoring the physician's ordered plan of care can cause permanent problems with the girl's arm. Poor girl. Her mom is a dumbass.
