Judge me if you will, but I just offered to pay an ex-boyfriend to come and kill a roach in my bathroom. I tried, I did but was beyond disgusted. He said that where there is one, there are usually 100.
I live in an apartment in Los Angeles. For those who have lived in similar climates do you think this is true? It's an expensive place on the westside but the owners are lax with repairs (especially the plumming). I don't want to live anywhere unclean, so I'm wondering if this is the first of bigger problems. I know in places like LA and TX it's much more common.

Usually one means many more. Unless it was just brought in with a box or something but that's rare. They will also migrate to your place if your neighbor has them. And it you get them exterminated and the neighbor doesn't then they come back fairly quickly. Do you not have some sort of housing inspection in California that you could complain to?

Report it to the landlords and tell them you want it to be sprayed. There are probably more, but an exterminator can take care of it.

Depends on how big it is. Is it super huge? Those come up the pipes and spraying won't help.

Do the owners employ a pest control service that comes around every month to treat the indoor property?
Prevention. All about prevention.
If the owners do not, I would employ my own service. That's what we do here in Texas. And if I see a pest, I call the exterminator for an extra visit.

Go to Walmart and buy COMBAT ROACH KILLING STATIONS (there are 6 or 8 in a package). We live in New Orleans with trees and canals and bayous so roaches are everywhere. You want believe how well COMBAT helps. At least, it does for us. We get them after severe rains. Good luck ! ! ! !

I'd say it was true.
There are always more than you can see.

True! When I lived in an apartment, someone moved in below me and I had roaches.
Landlord sprayed but but what finally rid me of them was boric acid powder mixed with sugar and sprinkled in the kitchen.

I had one roach in my townhouse years and years ago. Killed it with bug spray and have never seen another.
I think usually it means there's more, but at least that time I have experienced it otherwise.

No. No. No. Not true. I'm not listening! Roaches are solitary and when there is one there is ONLY that one. There are not hundreds more waiting in the walls, floorboards, under appliances, in cabinets. Nope. They're so utterly disgusting they never have friends so they live a long, lonely solitary existence. But just to be safe, spray, bomb and put out traps like you're being invaded and overrun by millions of them. Oh yeah, and if all that doesn't work...move.

He said that where there is one, there are usually 100. Instead of buying regular bug spray, buy wasp spray. It comes out of the can in a very long, concentrated stream and you can stand WAY far away from any and all bugs. Spray until the drown. In my house, I have a stack of paper cups that I use to put over the dead body until a boy comes home and let them dispose. Although, the younger boy is going to graduate soon and I am going to have to sort out how I am supposed to deal with this on my own. *gag* I live in a warm, humid place. The rain tends to bring them around and I don't care how clean your house is, those things WILL be found in this weather.

This is absolutely true. I used to live in Florida. It's very hot, and very humid, and very wet. Those bastards love it and are everywhere, no matter how often and deeply you clean.
You can do what I did when my husband moved ahead of me and I was stuck dealing with them myself-get a giant bottle of roach Raid with a forceful sprayed. When you see on stand across the room and hose that bastard down until it melts. Then when your super sure it's dead, suck it up with a vacuum.
A friend of mine used to live in Savannah and she would pour bleach all over her floors once a week to keep them away. She said it stunk, but that it mostly kept them away.

What Dreamsofnyssa said. Water roaches are different. I have had a few - maybe five in the last three years - as well. They are disgusting. Lisa

Thanks everyone! I'm disappointed to hear this may be a large problem, but I will definitely be calling my landlord. I will also check out the suggested products. I love the peas! and I also love my ex who did come over and help Do the owners employ a pest control service that comes around every month to treat the indoor property? Prevention. All about prevention. If the owners do not, I would employ my own service. That's what we do here in Texas. And if I see a pest, I call the exterminator for an extra visit. They don't do any type of prevention. However, I am willing to pay for this myself and will look into it. I had one roach in my townhouse years and years ago. Killed it with bug spray and have never seen another. I think usually it means there's more, but at least that time I have experienced it otherwise. Here's hoping! No. No. No. Not true. Having lived in NYC, Miami, and Los Angeles, I can tell you that there are always more hiding. That said, the heat and dryness of Los Angeles seems to keep infestations in check while in New York they soon to thrive. Miami just has Amazonian cockroaches. Buy Black Flag Roach Motel. Roaches check in but they don't check out . It has some substance that roaches track back to the herd and works very well to eliminate them.

I'm pretty sure it has friends.
We had an office tenant who was clean and always emptied his trash. Another tenant moved in next door and was a pig. Food left out everywhere. For the first time in years, roaches appeared. It was awful. The messy tenant finally moved out and with him, went the roaches. No further sightings but it took a couple of months and no food source to clear our the roaches.

I grew up in the Los Angeles area and had several apartments. YES - there are more. They usually come out at night. Flip on a light and watch them scatter.

Oh and big roaches have nothing to do with cleanliness. The big ones are after water or warmth, or so the exterminator told me. Little roaches are after food. I don't have any little roach stories.

I'm with you. They live alone. I just found a solitary dead roach in my bathroom 2 weeks ago. I've never seen roaches here. That was the only one and I've not found anymore. It was just dead in the floor by a window. I was like WTH? I'm on the lookout, but I've not seen any more any where...

I'm thinking that roaches have to do the wild thing in order to make baby roaches, so I am guessing there are at least three in the area. I have honestly never seen a live roach. What makes them so horrible? Just wondering. While I am not fond of bugs, I do like spiders.

Depends on how big it is. Is it super huge? Those come up the pipes and spraying won't help. Yup. Super huge which is why I couldn't handle it. We call them Palmetto bugs in the South. They kept appearing in my house a couple of years ago and I freaked out. Called exterminator. He told me that they were numerous that year because of the heavy rains. Also said that they only live 24-48 hrs. inside. So bigger is better- probably just a single one that got in somehow.
Now, German roaches are those small to medium sized ones that live in families and get into your walls. If you start to see them in your cabinets -that's when you have a roach problem. He looked all in my cabinets and vanities with a light trying to see eggs. Found nothing- thank God. I learned more about roaches that summer than I wanted to know.
So, it's probably just a stray that wandered in. Of course call your landlord. I second the Raid combat stations- they will give you peace of mind!

Gonna hijack this thread...................sort of Have you all heard of the correlation between Keurig coffee pots and roaches? I had my Keurig at work and noticed roaches around it. The company called in an exterminator and he's the one that told me that roaches love Keurig coffee pots. We got rid of the roaches at work and not long afterward I brought it home and yes, you guessed it, roaches started showing up at my house. Called the exterminator (different one) and he told me the same thing about Keurigs and roaches. He suggested I put my Keurig in the freezer for a couple of days and he sprayed my house. I no longer have roaches in my house but I'm afraid to bring my Keurig back. It's still sitting in the freezer...................I'm thinking about buying a new one but I don't want the same problem again. P.S. We are using a Mr. Coffee at home right now and no roaches in sight............................trying "googling" roaches and Keurigs, you'll see what I mean..................
