Seriously, I timed him the other day when he got started on a subject and he didn't stop for about an hour and a half. My job allows for talking, but sheesh, I can only listen to the same voice for so long! I live for my breaks when I can sit in silence.

I have one of those too. Thankfully she's only part time. Otherwise I'd never get anything done!

Look him right in the eye and say "Stop talking".

Look him right in the eye and say "Stop talking". Yea, that isn't going to fly. I'm new and don't want to come in with guns ablazing. I just tune him out and don't respond, he seems happy enough to talk to himself. I take the lead from others in the room who do the same thing.

My daughter does that with me sometimes and we call it "Keri Radio." At times I do tell her "stop talking." She is 21.
I certainly see why you can't say that to a co-worker. Good thing you can tune him out.

90 minutes? That's horrific! I don't think there's any subject I could talk about for that long!

Ouch, ear plugs or ear buds, that's all I've got. That and good luck.

Can you have headphones to listen to music while you work? or would this interfere with your work? I used to use headphones to "tune" out anything going on in the cube farm so I could concentrate on my coding.

I can use ear buds, but only in one ear, so I would still hear him talking.

I just start loud typing when co-workers get too chatty. I think they get the hint.

I have this co-worker, too. She's not as bad as yours but pretty damn bad! I usually just keep working and stop making eye contact and she eventually tapers off. I wish I had the guts to tell her to shut up but it would just be too awkward in the future. We all talk about how much she talks and try to rescue each other from her if we can. The thing that kills me is that she will finish a story and then repeat it!!! I think if she doesn't get the response she wants she tries again! Gah!!!!

Tell him that you can't concentrate on your work so could he please save it for a tea break - and then take your break at a different time to him.
