We went to our county fair tonight to go through the animal barns and get an elephant ear, haha. While in the horse barn we noticed this one horse had something strange on its legs, which I had never seen before. There was nobody around to ask, but I told hubby that surely someone here would know what this was all about. It looked as though it had been painted on, was somewhat thick, and had dried and was 'cracking' off. It was on all four legs. It was just such a weird sight. Can anyone educate me?

Interesting! I've never seen anything like that before, but I don't show my horses. I'm very curious now so I hope one of the peas knows.

I wondered if it would have been a cast of some sort, but it didn't look stiff enough to be of support, if that makes any sense. Then I thought maybe it was to keep the horse from chewing on any 'hot spots' but the fact that it was on all four legs from hoof to knee made me discard that thought.

Huh. I used to show, but never saw anything like this. My guess would be some kind of poultice?

I've tended to horses in all kinds of arenas and for all kinds of purposes, and I have never seen that before, either.

I have seen it. We don't use it. Not sure what it is called but it is to stimulate blood flow and just helps with overall leg health

Huh. I used to show, but never saw anything like this. My guess would be some kind of poultice? I Googled "horse leg poultice" and found a product called: Sore No More® Cooling Clay Poultice It states: An excellent topical application for sensitive skinned animals to cool and tighten before and after exercise, training or competition. It was very very hot there today so maybe it was used to keep the horse cool? The only exposure I have to horses is at the annual county fair, but I've never seen this before. Thanks for giving me an idea as to what to Google.

Hmm, I'll pass. Sounds like it would annoy the horse, at least, and potentially hurt it. I bet it's also a pain in arse for the humans to remove.

It's poultice, although generally you would wrap the leg after applying the poultice. It's clay based, so once it dries it's pretty easy to remove with a curry comb.
