We're spending a few days in Vancouver and I don't want to book a hotel in the worst part of town, nor do we want to spend more than $250 a night. The newer the hotel, the better?
For anyone that lives in Vancouver or has spent time there, is that possible?

I'm in Vancouver. Where do you want to stay? Are you coming as a tourist? If so, staying downtown is a good idea. Vancouver is one of the most expensive cities. $250 sounds ok. I pay that much to stay in a Seattle suburb. Are you coming from the U.S.? If so, you win on the exchange.
How far out do you want to stay? If you stay by the airport in Richmond you can be close to the Canada line that can take you straight downtown.
if you want to give me location options I'll tell you which locations aren't desirable areas.

Just taking a quick look at Expedia it is very doable. I would stay in any of the hotels that came up on a downtown Vancouver search I just did. The Sutton Place is in a great central location near restaurants and shopping (and they used to have a great chocolate buffet that is perfect paired with a bottle of champagne, but it was many years ago that I went so not sure if they still have it).
If you look at a Vancouver map, the downtown West End and Yaletown are residential areas with shopping and restaurants. Anything within a few blocks of English Bay or Stanley Park is really nice.
The airport is in Richmond and there are a number of nice hotels, but I'd prefer to stay in Vancouver.

Tripadvisor likes it too link. With the exchange rate it is in your budget.

That price is average for a downtown Vancouver hotel. And I too have paid that much if not more to stay in downtown Seattle. Your $ is higher than our's right now so that will offset the cost a bit.
I think being downtown is better for all the tourist things, shopping etc. There's the Hyatt Regency as well, Four Seasons, Residence Inn.

We're from Canada, we're driving the highway 3 and will be coming in to Vancouver tonight. I wish we had the dollar advantage right now, especially because we'll be driving back through Seattle on the way home.
I'll have a look at some of the hotels linked, a lot of the ones I looked at last night were $500 a night and as much as I'd prefer to just stay in one of those, we'd rather spend that money on seeing Vancouver.

We've stayed at the Sutton Place and while I agree that the location is good, do NOT get a room that is even remotely close to an elevator. The walls aren't well insulated and we had to move rooms in the middle of the night because I couldn't sleep with the elevator noise.

We just stayed at the Soleil hotel right downtown. I have no idea how much it was, but it was a boutique hotel. It was very nice inside. The room was totally soundproofed. I liked it a lot. It was 2 seconds from Skytrain and honestly a great location. I would definitely stay there again-I was the escort to the Neil Diamond concert. (I had dinner with DS instead).

Whenever we are in Vancouver we stay downtown at the Westin. Price is worth the water views to us. I love downtown Vancouver. Spent the weekend on our 10 year anniversary. Was a wonderful trip. Need to make a weekend drive again soon. Enjoy!!

All are good suggestions. There's also the Wall Centre on Burrard.
And, I'm paying that much to stay in Victoria for one night this weekend. Ugh.
