Would it be safe to save hair color to use for touch ups? How would you store it?

Pretty sure you can't do that. Once it's exposed to air, it degrades.

Thanks busypea...I knew there had to be a reason I hadn't heard of doing this!

No.
Boxes of hair color specifically warn NOT to do this.

Once youve mixed the formula it will not keep for more than an hour or so. If you only mix half of each of the two parts you can use that and mix the other half at a later time. That is only if both parts are able to be sealed after dispensing your first half. Unmixed, both parts will last quite some time if sealed air tight.

The lady at Sally's had me get the tube of color (rather than the bottle) and mix it myself with the developer. I have very short hair and can do it with an ounce of each, rather than the 2oz you get in boxed hair color or the 2oz bottles that they sell. She said using the tube doesn't expose the color to as much air as the bottle does. I color every 6-8 weeks and have had no trouble with what she has me buy.

My hair is short and fine and when I Colour it at home, I often divide up the colour components and save half for next time.

I just used a new one that is designed to be able to do that. Unfortunately, it burned out all my brain cells and I don't remember what it was. It was one of the common store brands, and my first thought was L'Oreal. It was a "foam" one, if that helps at all. I liked it fine, and the color seems to be lasting fine as well.

My hair is cut in a bob that's just a tad longer than chin length. I just touch up roots when I color. As a result, I can get two applications from one box.

I was just going to suggest that one. I can't remember what it's called either.
