My daughter showed me this video after getting home today called "Don't Stay In School"...I watched it and agreed with plenty of things he said. What are your guys opinions on this? www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xe6nLVXEC0Also, I want to point out that he's referring to the methods and practices we use in school when he says "Don't Stay In School", not the kids.

He's very compelling, and he makes some valid points.

I think he didn't pay much attention or take advantage of what was offered when he was in school. Our students take health, first aid, personal finance, and register to vote and discuss elections as part of the government class. More importantly, he should have gained the ability to learn. To find information and to digest it and use it.
The curriculum of many classes as dictated by what is considered to be a college prep curriculum. This curriculum is intended for students for him high school will not be the end of education. Unfortunately, for a lot of students they do stop with high school. And a high school education May not be adequate for everything a person wants to do. Hum, I just came across something on Facebook asking people to send cards to little boy suffering from a mitochondrial disease. My former students know what mitochondrial diseases are. And why mitochondria are interesting when studying your genetic Ancestery . And they have the background they need to succeed in a biology class in college.

Maybe it was written for homeschoolers? Otherwise, I have nothing.

I think maybe when I was younger and less...informed? I might have agreed with him. But now that I am older I don't agree at all. Or at least from the perspective of going to college and watching my kids go through school.
They have learned a lot of what he speaks about, but they also learned critical thinking skills and practical applications of the higher level classes. So while I have some issues with the education system as a whole, I think it still does a good job preparing kids for later life. I have a history degree and it has helped me over the years understand the events of today. I didn't learn the specifics from school, but I learned how to put current events into a context that allows me to make more informed decisions.

Some valid points.
My kids were taught several of the things he wasn't, but the general over all sentiment is valid. Thought provoking. There are many children who do not need, nor will benefit from some of the courses required to graduate.
I find it appalling that he went to a school where he wasn't taught first aid, the bill of rights, basic stock trading, etc. that's sad. I guess I'm thankful my kids district found ways to work those in, DD was CPR certified in highschool.

I don't know where he went to school but all of that is taught at my high school. Even parenting, which should fall on the students' parents' shoulders, IMO. But some as electives so he'd have to actively seek out the topics.

I don't think any school sets out to teach anyone everything they need to know - it's supposed to give you the basics so you are able to learn for the rest of your life, right? School doesn't teach you to be a cashier or work as landscaper or do brain surgery - it gives you the tools you'll need to learn to do those things.
The only thing I completely agree about is that the law isn't taught, but I also know people who would decry that kind of education as police state propaganda, so I'm not sure schools can win.
I want to tell him, "Honey, if you can read and understand Shakespeare, I'm sure you can figure out how to vote. Sorry it hasn't all been spoon fed to you, figure it out."
Why am I annoyed at him? I don't even know, but my eyes hurt from rolling. Oh god: I'm old.
