I remember awhile back there was a discussion on essentials oils and if it was safe to ingest them.
All I can remember was the general consensus was that you shouldn't ingest but, I can't remember why.
This came up in a recent conversation with my oldest son who was given the Doterra oil On Guard to ingest to keep sickness away.
I told him he shouldn't ingest because it was bad for him. He wants to know what exactly it would do to him if he ingested. So since I can't remember any of the particulars could someone please remind me??!! Thanks!

I have heard that the concentration of oils is so intense it could damage internal organs. That being said, I have used on guard mixed with a carrier oil and massaged it on my throat and upper chest and I feel like it helped.

They're just too concentrated for your body to handle and your organs to process. And they can have drug interactions. And beyond that, ingestion is unnecessary. Most essential oils are most effective aromatically, and some are most effective topically. Even if ingesting them was safe, it's overkill and wasteful. This is a good article Can Essential Oils Be Ingested? If you ingest them, you go through them more quickly, meaning you buy more, sooner. Honestly, I think advising against ingesting is not in a company's best sales interest, which makes me more interested in what they have to say when they advise against it anyway.

I cannot fathom a person who would ingest something like an essential oil (in a capsule) without proper medical advice - such as a pharmacist or medical doctor.
I don't understand these essential oil parties where a person (usually without a science degree) tells you to rub or ingest or use other oils to transfer these oil onto various parts of your body.
I do understand that these oils may help in certain ways however, never would I ingest something where the person recommending such is not a licensed medical practitioner.
