...and getting rid of a few projects (sewing mostly). I had some fabric that I no longer loved that I was keeping fpr "someday." And some frames I might use eventually. They are gone and it feels awesome!

Even if it's not in your face you know it is there, there's an invisible weight on your shoulders. I am doing the same around the house right now. I go through phases with this. For the first 7 years my husband and I were together we moved every New Years Day. It was awesome for getting rid of clutter. Now it waxes and wanes as I go through my bipolar cycles. When I'm hypomanic like I am now, watch out!

But I lack motivation and conviction at the moment.

I did this to my crafty room this past spring. It's so freeing not to be burdened with stuff you might use someday.
I got home from work yesterday and DH said he did "some downsizing". He went through his closet and got rid of a big bag of clothes. Then boxed up our old and broken electronics to be recycled. So as were were cooking dinner I cleaned out the utensil/gadget drawers. How many pizza cutters, peelers and zesters do two middle aged people need? I have a container of items for my sister and nieces to look through.

I touched EVERY SINGLE ITEM in our house & donated or recycled over half of it! While our house doesn't look different to guests, my closets are well-organized & contain only things that we currently use or want to keep long-term. Like you, I feel much "lighter."

But I lack motivation and conviction at the moment. If you are looking for motivation I can not recommend this book highly enough It's All Too Much by Peter Walsh.

anniefb That book was just delivered earlier this week. I have been playing in my craft room instead of reading it though. Will have to start when I go to bed tonight!

Yeah, I like that! One along the same vein from Peter is that if you are keeping something for sentimental purposes, does it have a place of honor in your home where you can enjoy it. Really made me think about any memorabilia type stuff that is hidden away in boxes. It's something I struggle with. eta: But I do mostly agree with everything he says Seriously though, it's like the man could see into my mind!

I don't agree with everything she says, but her approach of using joy to decide what to keep has been the right one for me. My friend has over 100 pairs of shoes in her closet. I made her hold a pair of them and asked if they brought her joy. She just looked at me. Nope. I made her answer. She laughed and said no. We did with ten pairs of shoes and she tossed about 50% of the shoes I made her hold. (It was only five pair tossed.) Two summers ago her house burned in a huge fire. She had purchased that many shoes in just two years!

I try to do a drawer or a cabinet at least once a month. I find that I need to be in the right mood for it and I am able to get rid of a lot of stuff.
I cleared out a lot of stuff from my craft room and I was going through it again and I found some things that I am putting in my pile to sell at the garage sale at the upcoming crop in October. I have about 15 duplicate Tombow markers and I might just let my CM pens and some SU pens go as well. I already have 60 SU stamp sets ready to sell. I have a full set of SU pencils and also a lot of EK Success pencils, might have to make a decision and choose one set.
The one thing in my kitchen that I haven't been able to part with but have used only twice in 20 years is my cake decorating stuff. Sigh, I just can't let it go. I did migrate the Wilton tool box to the basement, but haven't been able to pull the trigger and sell it. Just lots of memories attached with it as I learned cake decorating in Girl Scouts and I entered some competitions. Maybe I'll take a picture of it and let it go. Working on it.
Otherwise, I'm really not too sentimental about things.

MerryMom I agree, being in the right mindset is super important! It took me a while but I finally realized that in regards to getting DH to go through his things. And tell me about it with the cake stuff. We have a 2 door lower cabinet full of it and neither of us have touched it since we took classes last year or the year before. Have you considered taking it out to play with it and seeing if you get enjoyment out of it now? Do you have a child or niece/nephew...heck any family member you can pass it on to? Photos are a great idea. Do you have any of your past cakes?

I so need to do that "all over the house". But I lack motivation and conviction at the moment. If you are looking for motivation I can not recommend this book highly enough It's All Too Much by Peter Walsh.I wasn't really looking for motivation -- LOL. -- I want my house finished first, then I can decide what I really want to put out, throw away, or keep.
