How is everyone doing this week? What are you doing today to make yourself healthier and happier?
I was both happy and depressed to realize that I'm just over halfway to my weight loss goal: I've lost around 38ish pounds and have about 30 more to go! Happy because.. Well, that doesn't even need explaining. Depressed because that means I still have this amount of effort to do over again, plus the last bit is always harder to lose. I've been tracking my weight (on and off) at Sparkpeople since about 2006/2007, and it's hard to see that my weight now is what it was at when i started working really hard to get thin, the last time I had to do this.
Baby steps, right??
By the way, when I was typing the subject line "weight loss" autocorrected to "woeful odds" which is so fitting!! I know when the goal seems so far away and hard, it feels like the odds of making it truly are woeful. But we can do this! One good decision a day, against the woeful odds.

Congratulations on your loss! That's awesome!
Well, I'm not in the weight loss phase but the maintaining phase. I've been at goal since last October but I still work diligently on staying at goal. I was just making out my grocery list because I will be doing some cooking this weekend. I like to always have healthy meals readily available. It makes it so much easier planning for my lunches and dinners.

Well, I lost 40lbs and gained 10 back. I want to lose the 10 lbs. Maintenance is harder than dieting. I've failed miserably at losing the 10lbs all summer. This week I've had a terrible stomach bug which is strange since I'm rarely sick. I've lost 5 lbs due to this bug. Maybe it's the kick start I need LOL.

I hit my goal weight in March and now I'm trying to do some recomp (lose fat, build muscle). I've been following Crush 60 for the last four weeks or so. OMG I love this program!!! I've done weight training on and off for a few years (on since January) and I've never followed a program where I've seen such huge changes in such a short period of time.
I'm off to camp on Friday so I'm a bit wary of keeping on track. There's a nearby gym that I can go to - it's just going to be a matter of finding the time.

Well done everyone, it's really hard to lose and maintain your weight. I've been trying off and on for the past 20 years. I'm going to weigh in at WW in a few hours, fingers crossed for another loss. I've tried really hard to stick to the filling and healthy plan this week. The scales will tell the story

Great job ladies!! Keep it up! I did great last weekend - seeing a loss of 4 lbs. But I've had a rough couple of days with eating. I finally pulled myself together this morning. I walked both Sat & Sun and typically those days I don't walk because my dh is home. But we went together. I didn't go yesterday but then I went this morning. I only did a mile and a half/30 mins because right now I'm just trying to establish a good routine. That and I was having some muscle pain in my right leg...I thought after I got warmed up, it'd be ok but it never went away, only worsened.
My plan for today is to figure out what to have for lunch for the next week or so. I really struggle with healthy lunches. I mentioned on Ashley's other thread that I pack lunches for dh (he always takes leftovers) and the kids but they always tell me what they want. I get bored with the same old thing so I need to find something new to have.

All summer I've been in a holding pattern, focusing more on maintaining than losing. That's been fine but now I'd like to focus on that last ten pounds and getting more lean. I know this will be harder than all the rest!

I'm going to a scrapbook convention this weekend, and instead of living on event concessions, room service, junk food, and takeout the next few days I put together healthy snacks to take with me and scoped out some healthy and inexpensive dining options near the hotel and convention center. I'll not only be on track food wise, but I'll have more energy and alertness too from not spiking my blood glucose with heavy meals and processed convenience food.
I've got snack/lunch bags put together with some almonds, kale crisps, dried unsweetened strawberries, a babybel cheese, a square of 86% cocoa chocolate, and a bottle of unsweetened iced tea. Also individual guacamole and hummus packets with high fiber crackers for breakfast, and little veggie and dip snack packs for nighttime snacking. Yes, I'll be having some treats, but I didn't want to use the weekend to enable lots of bad choices.

I've been wearing my fitbit faithfully and it keeps me moving. I want to at least have 10,000 steps per day, so I've been doing a 3-mile walk almost every day. I'm counting calories (the only way that really works for me) and have lost 7 lbs. in the past 3 weeks. I want to lose another 7 and I'll be happy. It's slow though ... my thyroid is very low-functioning and though I take thyroid pills, they only do so much. I had a plateau for several days, and I think it was from eating baby carrots. Is that ridiculous? I bought a big bag of them and had them throughout the day on several days and lost 0 pounds. Anyway...once i get to goal I'm going to try hard to really watch and not wait till I gain 15 lbs to start losing.

Congrats everyone! I am making a commitment to lose my babyweight this year (approx. 20 lbs), since my baby is now 4.5 years old! Gulp. I am ramping up for a Whole30 (probably - I may make some slight exceptions which I know is against the rules, so I may be doing a MostlyWhole30 right now). Too many ice cream treats this summer!
I've fallen off the exercise wagon because my DH traveled a lot this summer and I couldn't make it to my favorite exercise classes. And I did not make up that time at home.

I hit a wall. I have been losing and gaining the same 2 lbs. for a few weeks now. I am going to be happy with my clothes feeling looser. I would love to break this plateau though. I have noticed that since I started taking Metformin regularly (I don't have diabetes) that I have very little appetite. I used to eat like a man and now I have to make myself eat. On the bright side, today I will work on a new dance of my own in class and eat more veggies.

My trainer told me to have a day off. It feels weird and I don't like it but I am having Fridays off now. We all have a drug of choice (mine used to be food) and I think my current one is exercise. I'm 53lbs down in 2015. Still a ways to go. Keep on truckin everyone :-)

So far so good! Another week another loss. Slow going for sure, but slow progress is better then no progress. It's my new motto! Lol! I injured my knee a week or two ago and it's finally healed enough that I can get back to HIIT workouts which I did last night. I really do enjoy yoga but I feel like I don't burn enough calories. But my knee prevented me from doing much more. I think I just tweaked it wrong one day. Time, ice packs and a brace helped tremendously.
Down around 16 pounds since May.
Way to go RefuPeas!!!!!!!

Congratulations on everyone's accomplishments--keep up the good work!
I decided when I started going to the dietician, I would only use their scale, and would know my weight loss on a monthly basis at my appointment. So I don't know how much I might have lost in the past week. I just plan to keep on keeping on, and we'll see the results.
Here's my biggest struggle: I've battled with my weight my entire life. So I've done the calories/points with WW, I've done the premade meals with Jenny Craig, and I've counted carbs with Atkins. The dietician I'm seeing really wants me to count calories AND carbs--so tracking 2 things. I'm not really thrilled with this. I really hate counting calories especially, and it's quite challenging balancing both. I'm doing it, and I did lose 11 lbs. the first month, but this is a struggle.
Does anybody else track/balance both calories and carbs?
***eta***One other thing--at my last appointment she also wanted me to increase and track my fiber intake. Ummmmm...okay, count calories, carbs and slowly track fiber. IMO it's a bit much, and I haven't even given much thought to fiber.
Is this the norm?
I'm almost afraid to find out what next month's topic is gonna be, lol.

I hear you @devildog I hate counting anything.
My goal is to increase strength. my mom is struggling as she ages and I see the issues cause by her lack of physical strength. So I've joined the Y and have an exercise partner and a plan. I did fit testing yesterday and know what I need to do.

I'll join in here I have a lot of weight to lose, I have PCOS and it's been a hard road so far. I started my new lifestyle in April and I'm down 50ish pounds so far. I seem to be at a plateau right now of gaining and losing the same 5-10 pounds. Mostly because I don't take my meds and stop tracking what I eat. I'm determined to lose 100 pounds by December. Hopefully I can do that.

Lovebug--absolutely FANTASTIC on your weight loss. Keep up the good work!!!
redayh: It really does feel like a job, and I've been telling my husband that, lol. I feel like I'm always thinking of food, because I'm planning meals but counting how many calories in this meal, or, if the calories are decent, are the carbs too high? It's really a lot of work. And, when she tossed in the fiber thing, the example she gave really contradicted what she suggested I have per meal with carbs. I've never seen a dietician before, so I have nobody else to compare this to.
Ehhh...being fat sucks.

So are you supposed to count the net carbs (subtract the fiber from the carbs to get your carb amount) or what? Geez what a pain.

I'm almost afraid to find out what next month's topic is gonna be, lol. If you use MFP, it tracks everything at the same time. I've stopped tracking food for the most part, but I did religiously when I was losing weight. I paid more attention to protein, rather than carbs because I was trying to maintain as much muscle mass as possible.
If you are eating fewer carbs in general, that would mean a higher percentage of protein and that's where the fibre becomes important. Lot's of protein and less fibre will slow your digestive tract down to a crawl.
I'm wary of any professional that specifically tells me to cut back on carbs (rather than just calories) because, unless you've been diagnosed with a hormonal imbalance or a sensitivity like celiac, cutting back calories from carbs is not going to make you lose fat any faster than cutting calories from any macro. It would certainly make me more miserable.

I might join this club! Trying to lose weight... went to the doctor yesterday and have lost 3lbs in about a month. Not a lot, but it's a start. I've cut out all soda (even diet) and sweet tea (that one was a huge challenge for me!). I'm drinking just water and unsweet tea now. We've also joined the Y, so trying to go there and work out a couple times a week.

So are you supposed to count the net carbs (subtract the fiber from the carbs to get your carb amount) or what? Geez what a pain. I asked her about that, and she said something along the lines of count total carbs unless the fiber count/amount was over a certain number reducing carbs by so much. I can't quite remember what the ratio/math problem was, so I just count net carbs, lol. If you use MFP, it tracks everything at the same time. I've stopped tracking food for the most part, but I did religiously when I was losing weight. So does what my dietician is saying make sense, tracking calories and carbs? It's not a way I've ever dieted before. It makes sense about the fiber, but it's becoming a full time job trying to cut back on the carbs because the meal is too high in calories then, and try adding in added fiber but then carb count goes back up. Does that make sense? It's awfully confusing to me, lol.

I'm just getting started again. I've done another week no sugar and I'm still doing ok. I even made cookies twice and didn't have any cookies or dough (the dough was harder to resist.) I only lost 3/4 of a pound last week, so things are slowing down for me. I have made a couple of other changes this week, so hopefully I'll see better results from this.
My sister is really pushing 21 day fix right now, and dh and I are considering doing it. I can't decide if those fussy little cups make things easier or harder.

I am now down 18.4lbs...yes, I count every.single.ounce. I had a crappy week with exercise last week because my fibro flared up, but I am doing better this week. I'm taking it slow and steady. The good news is my tendinitis is better in my feet, so maybe I will be able to add walking back into my cardio soon. Keep up the good work ladies!

Any advice for someone who doesn't get enough sleep? I don't want to go into a long story, but it's impossible for me to get consistent good sleep. SO I drink way too much Coke. I grab whatever is quickest to eat because I'm too tired to care. I don't exercise because I'm too tired.
Any alternative suggestions besides sleep more? I've never had coffee. I'm not opposed, just never liked the smell. I've had green tea. I bought a bottle of caffeine pills and will sometimes take half a pill. One of them makes me way too jumpy!
I know my diet is crap and I do get tempted by the junk food in our house. I can't and won't throw it out because my husband lives here and I won't micromanage what he can and cannot eat. So anyway, need to figure out quick meals I can make for me.
I'm super fat and would like to lose 60 pounds. It's depressing typing that out.

Does that make sense? It's awfully confusing to me, lol. Does what she's asking make sense for me? Not really, no. Has she given you a reason for cutting back on carbs other than they contain calories?
Does what you say about fibre make sense? Absolutely, because fibre is a carb. If you consume 1g of fibre, you are consuming 1g of carbs. Increase your fibre and you increase your carbs.
Here's the thing - eating lots of carbs will make you retain a good amount of water. This is why, when people start a low-carb diet, they tend to lose a lot of weight at first. Wow, amazing! The low-carb thing works! After a few weeks, though, they are no further ahead than those who lose weight consuming the same number of calories but with a balanced mix of macros (fat/carbs/protein).
If you aren't cutting back carbs (and even if you are) I would always recommend getting lots of fibre - it makes you feel full for longer and it 'greases the wheels' so to speak. It also tends to indicate that a food is a little closer to its natural form and, hopefully, still has a good amount of micronutrients (vitamins, minerals, etc). Fibre helps keep you healthy.
Either way, whether you follow your dietician's advice or not (and I'm not telling you not to), try tracking on MFP. I tell MFP that I ate a Chipotle Burrito Bowl with chicken and veggies but without sour cream and cheese (Lactose intolerant) and it tells me I consumed 545 calories, 63g of carbs, 26g of fat, 44g of protein, and 18g of fibre. Easy.

What about recipes? How does that work with MFP? I've tried sparkpeople off an on but found it tedious. If I find a recipe online, I input the link into MFP, and it picks out the individual ingredients and measurements (cup, mg, etc) and gives the total calories for the recipe. I can then just say how many portions the recipe contains and how many portions I eat. If you want to be exact (and I do), you weigh the final dish (1400g?) and then tell MFP that there are 1400 portions. Then I weigh what I eat of it (85g? 168g?) and MFP allocates the calories and macros to my diary.
You can also input the ingredients into the recipe builder manually. Either way, you can save the recipe for the next time you eat it, click a button and it's in your diary.

We had Wendy's Bacon cheese burger for dinner last night. Our fun night. It was so nummy. I really enjoyed it. But I also sat there while eating it and told my self that I deserve this burger because I have been really good about eating right and losing weight. I have learned in all this that I need those fun nights and look forward to them. I have changed my bad eating habits into good eating habits and have lost 52 pounds since the middle of March. I don't have a final weight goal. My goal for doing this was to change my eating habits and get healthier. While doing that of course the weight comes off.
My husband is the biggest achiever because of his very bad eating habits has changed to pretty good eating habits. He didn't weigh himself before we started but he has dropped 2 clothes sizes. He really needs to go shopping soon. But he is holding off for another few months as his clothes gets baggier and baggier.
But man that Bacon Cheese burger was so good. Back to veggies and protein for me.
