Yeah, that does suck, I'm sorry! I worked in a position with a similar schedule. 9 hours a day Mon-Thurs. You really get used to 3 day weekends and losing that impacted so much.

That really sucks for you. But I think that's how it works everywhere. Until they are given the go-ahead to make it known to the group, managers are NOT supposed to even hint that changes are coming at my company. They don't want want rumors (or facts for that matter) to leak out ahead of time before they have a clear idea of what they are doing or they have a response ready.
But I'm sorry that happened! Maybe you can find something else to supplement, although I'm sure the timing would be less than convenient!

I wonder if your manager knew, or it was a surprise to them as well? sucks for all involved to be announcing the change this close to the beginning of school! I wonder if that was part of the intent, to not leave anyone time to transfer out and then have to deal with replacing them.

My husband knew that 2 of his employees were going to be laid off about 4 months before it happened. He hinted to them for 3 months to find new jobs. They didn't listen and ended up not being able to find new jobs for several months. My husband could have been fired for doing what he did.

I'm also guessing they couldn't share the info yet. I also have a p-t, flexible job that works great with having 1 kid in elementary and 1 in preschool. Changes in hours would require a lot of reshuffling of childcare.

I"m sorry. What a bummer. Especially when you specifically asked about it.

Generally it can't be announced until someone up farther on the food chain makes the decision. That decision is often dependent on factors where info arrives late (like budgets, knowing how many classes in each grade will be needed, etc). And sometimes it has to do with employment law factors (# of specific groups of employee for example)
It does stink to have a less flexible schedule, but if you enjoy the job at least that is a good perspective to have.
I know lots of employers who are pulling flexible schedules because they just don't work as well for the employer and their co-workers as they do the specific employee. We have one guy who takes Mondays off but works Saturdays. That's great for him personally, but hard for the rest of us when we need something on Mondays and have to wait until Tuesday to talk with him about it. And no, there is no backup for him that we can call since we are a small company.

Aren't you a teacher? If I'm remembering correctly, my guess would be that it's an projected enrollment versus actual enrollment that made the difference. School districts are always adjusting at the start of the year with more people/less people because it does come down to funding and the business side of things.

Sucks when it happens, but it does happen and sometimes can't be helped.
I'm enrolled in a dog training class every Thursday during my lunch break. It works because that is my work from home day, but we were just told they have to switch our days. I'm hoping I can finish off this session, but no telling.

That rots - and it seems especially unfair to spring it on you with such short notice!

Until the change has been approved by upper management, board, union, etc. etc., the employer cannot tell you of the changes.

I've worked in schools for 19 years and have come to accept that nothing stays the same. Positions, hours, funding, transfers, students, responsibilities, pay, staff, benefits, etc. are always changing. Kind of like in the private sector. Sorry that it has affected you.
