I would probably keep a mini first aid kit, some tampons, and maybe a dop kit in there for guests use. What's a "dop kit"?? Sorry I left off a "p". Dopp kits are mens toiletries bags. Usually have comb, aftershave, nail clippers, etc. my Gramma always kept one in her sownstairs bathroom but mafe it kinda unisex. She usually had one of those mini sewing kits in it too.

In our half bath, I keep it well stocked with extra toilet paper, tampons, pads, liners, bandaids, headache pills and other necessary items. This way if we have guests they don't need to be embarrassed to ask for something they might need. This also helps me when I am on the main floor and need some pads or something, then I don' have to climb the stairs. I also keep a new toothbrush in packaging and a small travel size tube of toothpaste for any unexpected overnight guests. I think you mentioned having extra towels and tissues, we do that also.

My sister has a second set of tooth brushes for the kids in hers so they can pass last minute teeth inspection before they leave the house.
Mine has toilet paper, tampons, hair brush and ties, cleaning supplies, band-aids, and anything else I'm too lazy to walk all the way upstairs to get.
I'm going to get a sign that says "cloak room" and hang it on the door. I live by myself so I can be as weird as I want. I have a bathroom that has only been used by my nephews and the man I dated. I'm going to get a "men's room" sign for that one. Oops, went on a tangent there....

This thread took a fun turn! I also remember the cloakroom that ran the length of the classroom, where we put our winter boots and coats. I think your porch may be what we call the entry or entryway. It often has a closet for coats (and all the other bits and pieces like binoculars, large folded flags, wrapping paper, and a volleyball.) I really have to make a list of all those British words, so I can refer to it when reading mysteries. Yes, a porch is your entry/entryway. Your porch is our verandah/deck/balcony I think?

Who would have thought so much discussion would come out of what to store in a drawer? Great, educational thread!

Fun thread! Over here we call the ground floor facility the guest loo. In my home it leads off the entrance hall, which sounds a lot grander than it is. Just a little room with a toilet, handwashbasin and mirrored storage/ display shelf thing. What do the Peas think about one of these little rooms that has no mirror? Such a low-cost item, surely omitting it is an oversight at best, rude or a little passive-aggressive at worst, right?

I hate that! I automatically look up when I'm washing my hands and ugh! Staring at the wall! I can see it being an oversight initially but long term - just a pain!

Farmer's porches are an outdoor deck with a roof over it that runs the length of the front of the house. I've always wanted one filled with rocking chairs and flower boxes .

A bunch of us were discussing this person a couple of weeks ago. She wishes to be considered an extraordinary hostess, but after comparing notes we concluded it suits her to keep everyone just a little off balance. Not a new house or newly decorated and her husband is a builder .

Your Farmer's porch was our verandah (always with an h) or breezeway. A posh one would have sliding flyscreens and would have been the most desirable place to sleep on a really hot night.

Sorry for the hi-jack OP........But is a half bath a bathroom without a bath? What's the difference between that and a cloakroom which just has a loo and a basin? I always thought a cloak room was for storing cloaks or coats. And the US a half bath it's just the sink and the toilet.

Here's another tangent for you - how do you pronounce bath?! Now I know what a half bath is, I would say har-f bar-th.

When I read British novels, I often wonder why houses in the UK always seemed to have entire coat rooms instead of front closets. I'm glad you asked the question! I thought the same thing.
