It's offical - I save too many scraps...more than I'll ever use up.
I've made 50 cards this week so far - just from scraps (ok - I used 2 sheets of white cardstock as well and pre-made blanks) and it hasn't even made a dent.
Today's project - go through the scraps and be realistic about what will actually be used - the rest needs to go.
I have 50 more card blanks - hoping to make those up this week as well. I'm just doing notecards for the most part, not occasion cards. I write several each week and in Sept, my daughter's friend leaves for boot camp and I'll be writing to him regularly to keep up morale and then in November, my son leaves for boot camp, so I'll need notecards to write to him as well. It's been fun making more masculine cards - my regular correspondents are all female.

That's great you got that many cards out of scraps. I keep all my scraps in a box. When it's overflowing I sift through and toss anything I don't see myself using.

good for you for actually using them for something! I only keep and use mine for layouts (I don't make cards), and I've gotten pretty ruthless about tossing them. I used to keep pretty much every scrap, down to only 1-2 inches square (thinking 'hey, I can punch something out of that, I should keep it'). I finally realized a few things: 1) I don't ever USE the scraps that small (I will never actually punch ONE butterfly, etc. out of that scrap of paper and use it) 2) I have more 12x12 sheets of paper than I will ever be able to use in my lifetime-- why am I keeping those teeny pieces? 3) When I DO use scraps, it's usually for layering on my layouts, so I gave myself permission to toss pieces smaller than about 4x4; if they're smaller than that, I won't use them and they just take up space. I did see a couple youtube videos on how you can use ONLY scraps to make a background for a SB page; I've done that once or twice, but it's not really my style.

50 cards in a week is impressive!! It's so freeing to get rid of scraps since they pile up so fast. I moved mine to the middle of my raskog cart and it is much less functional getting to them and using them. And I've put off going through them for over a year, at least. I probably need to look at a box again instead. I used to have 2 - one for neutrals and other for colors - and then kept them in there mostly upright so I could flip through them. They looked messy to me and I didn't have good shelf space for them so I switched to the raskog. That forced me to throw a lot more than I used to, at least.
I have a good friend that refuses to keep any scraps of any size. She said it's like losing 10 lbs of stuff every year when she doesn't and she gets through her plentiful supplies quicker.

For almost a decade, I've stored scraps in two stackable, white, wooden, PB letter trays with solid colors on top & patterned papers on bottom. I've found inspiration for new color & pattern combinations on layouts from this simple organization. While I tend to keep & use scraps from 12x0.5" strips to 11x12" blocks, I suggest donating your unwanted scraps to a local daycare, church preschool ministry, elementary school art department, after-school art program, or any children's organization. Everything will certainly be used & appreciated; you will have more storage space, while encouraging children's creative endeavors. HTH, & happy cardmaking!

I keep my patterned paper scraps all together in a 12x12 Iris box so I can rummage around in it when I need something (that's how I keep all my supplies), and I have my cardstock scraps in another one (I use those for Silhouette cuts, mostly). Once the boxes get full, I know it's time to weed through them and get rid of pieces I don't like or know I won't use.
Keeping it all together is a good way to come up with new, unexpected color and pattern combinations!

Thanks to all for the encouragement. My folders (my scraps are sorted by colour (pattern and cardstock mixed) are now much slimmer after going through them ruthlessly and ditching anything I didn't love anymore, was too small, or wouldn't work on a card. I have a BIG bag to donate now - I'll bring to the next Girl Scout leader meeting - I always get a taker.
I do find I use more scraps when they are more accessible - I have my folders in magazine holders (flipped on their back) on the top of my paper cubes on my desk - visible and easy to grab (and easy to slip the new scraps in). I am trying to be more thoughtful when saving scraps but they still get overwhelming fast.

I turnover my scraps quite frequently. If they're more than a year old, I toss (smaller pieces) or give to DS (bigger pieces) to make room for new scraps.

I love my scraps and I can not part with any paper. But I do use those one inch pieces to punch out shapes. I have scraps so old, but just this last weekend I was working on my "National Day Celebration Project" and I found the perfect piece of patterned paper that worked with the subject I was scrapping. I even told DH how great it was that I have all this stuff, and I can rummage through and find that little "somethin' somethin'" for my pages.

I have so manu scraps. I really need to go through them and toss the smaller ones out and organize the larger ones. Maybe even make some cards.

I have very limited space and almost zero storage so I've made myself be pretty ruthless on the scraps. They need to be a certain size to keep (I like to do a lot of patchwork stuff with the paper) and I've made myself stop keeping branding strips.
Pretty impressive on the cards, though! Wowza!

I have been going through some things this morning and found a bunch of scraps. Between the ones I found, and the ones I had, it is definitely time to either cut them to specific sizes that can be used for layouts and cards, or else toss them.
I think I am going to make several stacks of specific sizes with the scraps, organize some of those into card kits, and then offer the rest to my scrapping group.

I keep mine in a set of Sterilite drawers under my desk sorted by color family. For a long time I would just chuck the pieces in there and it was such a mess. Now I take the extra few seconds to trim off any raggedy edges so the scrap is a nice rectangle or square shape. It's so much easier to pull out the piece I want, and so much easier to use the scraps with my cutter if they have straight edges. I purge the drawers once or twice a year if they start to look like they're getting too full and give the excess to the school or a scout troop.

I just wanted to thank all of you that said you toss your scraps. Isn't it funny how we keep things that we know we won't use? Even funnier that I feel like this thread has kind I given me permission to throw out scraps. As I've been getting ready to move I've been thinking about tossing my scraps. I quickly looked at my scrap bin as I packed and the first thing I noticed was that it smelled dusty. Yeah, time to toss it. I'm very good about purging things to avoid household clutter in every area of my home…except my scrap supplies. I have time to purge before I move! Why move stuff that I don't need?
Thanks, ladies!

I keep some scraps, but nothing really small. And I do clear them out regularly. Sometimes I just get sick of certain patterns etc so just decide to toss things.

I use those drawers too by colors of the rainbow, pink, a mixed brown/black/grey, and white/cream. For patterned paper, if it is part of a collection I keep it with the collection. Otherwise, I put it by the the first color I think of when I see the paper, and don't give myself time to think about it. I did the same trimming for a bit but have completely let that fall by the wayside. Thanks for the reminder! Because I have a big drawer for each color, and apparently am not nearly as prolific as all of you there hasn't been a need to purge. I'm also really good at going to the drawer first for cards, photo mats, whatever. It's super easy since I just need to turn my chair and pull out the drawer. With it being so big (12 x 12) there is plenty of room to move the paper around and not have to take it out to go through it.

I do what crazy for stamps does- trim them down in squares or rectangles. I sort by color in hanging file folders & try to look there 1st when I need a mat or a small piece of paper. I also make cards , but I find those small pieces to be the size i need when using my Cricut, so I only throw pretty small scraps away.

I used to keep every single piece of scrap that I had left over, every single little sliver and that was fine in the early days when I had enough supplies to fit into a 5L tub but these days I have to be more space conscious and I have enough paper to last me for the next 20 years so instead I only keep things above a 4x4 size. Small scraps are in a folder sorted by colour and then pattern types and the larger scraps go into 12x12 envelopes. I do try and use scraps before I cut into a full sheet and about once a year I will go through and purge bits from the scraps. Any offcuts and cricut waste goes to my kids school the teachers are always appreciative of that stuff.

I am so glad this was posted, I feel so much better !! Just last week I made cards using my scraps and then realized that no matter how much of them I used it never made a dent. I went through my scraps and threw a lot of them away. After I threw so many out I started feeling guilty and stopped throwing anymore out. Honestly I was tempted to go back in the bag and get them out again..what if I need them for something..LOL I should sit down another night and go through them again and see how much more I can throw out.

You can dissipate the guilt a little by donating any scraps you won't use to a school, preschool, daycare, church that has Sunday school, or scout troop instead of throwing them out or recycling them. They are always scrambling for good quality craft materials for the kids to use, and they would love to have them. When I go through and purge mine, I put them in a big box and the first person I can think of to ask that might want them, gets them. And to be honest, I haven't ever had to ask more than the first person on the mental list that pops into my head either. They are always spoken for right away!

Thanks for reminding me they can use scraps as well.

They do paper weaving and paper chains with the thinner strips plus collages, handmade paper and other things where the size of the pieces really doesn't matter. I do give them a fair amount of bigger pieces too in case they want to diecut stuff out of it.

I nail cut my scraps into 4 x 6 pieces and file them for card making. I find it if I have them already cut and filed I'm more likely to grab them when I want to make cards. It has to lake cut down on a huge problem for me I do keep some scraps of the colors that I use a lot like black and brown and white But anything smaller than 4 x 6 it's up in the trash
