Hypothetical... of course
Couple books a wedding package and adds on an album. Cancels wedding within days of wedding. Contract does not allow for refund of wedding package but does for the album. Never gives photographer any details of what their plan is (shoot, family photos, new date, whatever). Photographer does not meddle in the personal dealings of other people's lives and waits for an answer.
2 months later, couple wonders if they'll be getting the album refund, but wants interest (because they put it on their credit card).
+ interest or not?

I say no interest, just the album refund. If they were that worried about the credit card interest they should have had better communication with the photographer.

If the photographer did not ask if they wanted a refund for the album, then yes, I would give the interest (it can't be that much) because I think that's part of basic communication, not meddling.
I mean, the interest thing is petty on their part, but I wouldn't want to waste my time going back and forth with them. People who ask for stupid concessions like that are the people who are going to badmouth you on every social media site and to everyone they know if they don't get what they want. It wouldn't be worth it to me.
I'd bitch and moan about them privately, but would rather just get them out of my hair and move on. It's a small price to pay IMO.

ETA Why didn't the photographer refund the album immediately when the contract was canceled?

We're talking, what, $30 give or take a bit? It could cost you far more in time/effort to cleanup whatever bad PR they decide to inflict. No, what a bizarre thing to ask for! You have already had to pay the processing fee because they used their card, why would it be your responsibility that they didn't pay cash or pay off the card?

I'd say "You've got to be kidding", but I know you aren't. The financial status of the customer is not the business of the photographer. The photographer refunds according to their contract. No 'add on' items.

Absolutely not. They are lucky they are getting the refund on the album. Not the photographer's fault they have crappy communication skills. Although I would assume the photographer would word that a little nicer than I did.

Excellent point about processing fees. I'd also add that many places would not even refund the total amount, you know those 're-stocking' fees that many places have. But since that wasn't in the contract, I get that you'd refund the total amount plus any applicable tax but absolutely not any interest. That's just crazy thinking there. NOT your problem or business that they didn't pay their credit card in full that month. Sheesh, people will try anything these days, eh? |

Interest is charged when a debt isn't paid off in full by a certain time. The fact that the couple didn't pay their debt off within that time limit is not the fault of the photographer.

It would never occur to me to get a refund for interest. The photographer already pays a fee for processing the credit card payment for them already. What if they put it on a high interest card. Is it the photographer's fault they have crappy credit? That is just cuckoo bananas.

My gut reaction is No Way.
But Busypea has an excellent point - you may want to refund the interest if it's a stupid amount (and then change the contract language so you don't have to deal with this in the future!)
You could by all rights deduct your CC processing fee from the amount you refund of the interest, if you want to play that way.

My first response, and it was without hesitation at all, is to say no way.
However, the type of folks who'd even ask about this are the type who will go on social media and scream foul (after twisting the facts so the photog looks horrible).
On the third hand, I hate to reward stupid, rude people. (In this case, by giving them the interest.)

The me part of me says "oh hell no" on the interest refund - like others have stated, they didn't have to use their CC.
But, the business owner part of me says "what will it cost if I don't refund the interest?" Are these the type of people who will make the photog's life living hell over a couple of Hamilton's? If yes, then eat it and make it clear in the contracts for future bookings that interest will NEVER be refunded if the customer uses a CC and requests a refund. Learn from the mistake and move on. Cost of doing business, yada yada yada.

And actually you will also be out a 2nd CC processing fee (and aren't refund fees higher?) I would just tell them that both sides chose CC payment/processing and both sides are having to pay the fees/interest that they each accrued.
There are plenty of people who use CC's who never pay any interest (I haven't in at least 10+ years and I use my CCs every month!). It is not your problem they didn't pay in the grace period or get back for a quick refund.
