I'm sure this is a variation on a theme we've had here before, but I've never really found myself in this position.
A new restaurant opened nearby. The food is GREAT. I have eaten there several times. The owners are usually there at night, but during the day there is a woman who works taking the orders.
In this restaurant you order at the counter and they bring the food to your table.
One day I went in to pick up a takeout order and this woman was screaming at two of the kitchen staff people (it's an open kitchen). They walked outside and she followed them and continued to berate them on the street. I have no idea what precipitated this, but I'm not a fan of public humiliation so it made me uncomfortable to be buying food there.
I went yesterday for lunch. As I was preparing to order, someone came up to the counter and said that she believed that there was a misunderstanding with her order and that she wanted a small salad, not a large salad. She wanted to correct the order and get her refund. The woman behind the counter started berating the customer (who was an elderly woman) telling her that it was her (the customer's) fault because she didn't order correctly and that if she wanted the small salad she should have specified this. She said when you order a salad, you automatically get the large salad unless you say you want the small one.
Whatever.
They won't lose my business because of her, but I'm betting they will lose a lot of other people's business because of her.
I thought about sending a PM through their facebook page or mentioning it to them the next time I'm there. What would you do?

I would not PM their FB page, because it could be Berate Woman answering the messages. If so, yours would likely be deleted.
If you wish to alert the owners you either need to call & speak w/an owner or meet with them in person. There's no way I would dine there again if I were that elderly lady!

I would say something to the management about this. That woman is not customer-friendly at all (or employee-friendly.)
I don't care how good the food is, I wouldn't want to receive service like that.

Speak to the owners. That woman is doing great harm to their restaurant's reputation.

I'd probably Yelp it. "Food is great! If you like being abused, go there during lunch. Otherwise, dinner is your best bet."

Sounds like a perfect situation to secretly video tape then send that to the owner.

Yep would go in and ask to speak to the manager, they will more than welcome this kind of feedback.

My husband and I have had a similar situation in the past with an over the top rude hostess. It's amazing how rude she managed to be in the less than 5 minutes she had to deal with us. I'm honestly pretty laid-back and understanding, but she really pissed me off. Well, My DH knew the owner of the restaurant and he let him know about how we were treated. Owner fired the girl and thanked us for letting him know. If people don't speak up and complain owners and managers have no way of knowing their customers are being mistreated, because that type of person usually won't act that way in front of the boss.
If you are dining there when the owner is there I would tell them "Hey love your food, but your lunch manager makes me really uncomfortable". I'm sure they would be glad to hear about what you have to say.

Order taker is wrong about the salad- SHE should be asking if the customer wants small or large. All counter service places ask what size of an item you want. Talk directly with the owners.

Thanks, everyone! I will talk to the owner the next time I go. It would be sad for their new business to fail because of this woman.

I would post a review on yelp and trip advisor...along the lines of the suggestion above.

I would post a review on yelp and trip advisor...along the lines of the suggestion above. After reading the replies here I checked yelp. They have 85 reviews and an average of 4.5 stars. The smattering of poor reviews mention her. I'm wondering if the owners are discounting these complaints because they are not receiving them directly? Interesting that they would not have done something.

I would figure out a way to directly tell the owners. Service can make or break a restaurant and they have probably invested a large amount of money.
We had a locally owned restaurant that was really, really good but their service was AWFUL. They couldn't get their act together with getting food out at the same time, keeping our drinks filled (even when we were the only ones there), they didn't know how to make everything on the menu, the manager on duty didn't care about our complaints, etc. Went out of business shortly after it opened which is a shame because it could have been successful.

That would be really unfortunate for the owners! I wouldn't want to be related to her.

Definitely talk to owners before putting it on social media. If you talk to owners and it still happens, then by all means, post it elsewhere as it's now their reputation for service.

My husband & I stopped at a similar type place on a road trip once, and there was one employee berating another right out in front of everyone. I didn't say why, but I did ask to speak to a manager and I told him that I thought it was really unprofessional and just not right for someone to be screaming at another in that manner. Whether or not anything was done, I'll never know, but man, I just felt like I had to say something that day. The one was just reaming out the other.

Why do people avoid having a direct conversation with someone? Call the owner and have a conversation.
