Good thread. I'm thinking: I don't struggle...I just don't try a lot of things. Keeping it cheap, simple and not stressful. It's mostly pretty paper, great pics (or not so great) of people I love, stories about them or fun stuff we do.

Handwriting! I was watching a friend yesterday to crop make a journal box. She was writing by hand and writing right over a scrap of paper that had a portion of a giraffe on it. It looked beautiful! But I know if I try that, all I would see would be my ugly handwriting

I am very comfortable with the "standard" layout look of page elements linked together (photos in a block, embellies in clusters)
but I love some of the LOs I see with distinct blocks of items eg. photos separated across the page; strip of embellies opposite the photos...a good example is a recent LO put up by Irit (on youtube) where she put 3 mason jars down one side of her page, and 2 photos on the other...
So I guess I'm saying, I'm not comfortable with non-traditional design principles and want to get away from my standard look!

Watercoloring. Everyone has these beautifully blended colors. Mine just look blobby. That!

I'm in the arrows and embellishment clusters club.
Why oh why does every ephemera pack contain a zillion arrows? I try to use them. I put them on the page, move them all around, and then pull them back off.
Embellishment clusters just will never work for me. I have watched so many videos, and I just can't get the hang of it. Even as I watch, I think what they are layering is ugly and will never work. Then they get all done, and it is beautiful. I just don't get it.

Victoria Marie has started a "Scrapbooking for Mortals" series on her YouTube channel where she does a process video (they're long!) showing how to use different products. She has done one on layering, one on misting and one on modeling paste and is a very good teacher. I think there are 5 videos in the series to date. Here's the first one... How to Layer

Using pennants/banners never quite works for me. They always look out of place. I wish they would work. I love the way they look on other people's layouts.

Another layering drop out. It just never looks right. Arrows don't work right for me either.

Ink or mist splatters. They sorta work on a scrap paper but are an epic fail on a real project.
Does keeping my scrap table clean count?

I wish I didn't need a sketch or layout to start my creative process. Once I get going my page never looks like the sketch but still...I want to just "go" on my own.

I'm in the watercolor group. I can't ever get it to look like I think it should.

Layering. My layers are 2D and dull. (I did check out that Victoria Marie You Tube video though.) Anything wet. Paint, spray mists, ink drops, watercolor, I'm like a kindergartener finger painting. (I tried looking at a Wilna video for this.) Journaling. My stories and handwriting are boring to me. I wish I could punch them up a la Ali. So you see I've got some things to work on lol.

I don't find it easy to create really heavy, painted, textured pages. In the early days when I started scrapping those kind of pages were really 'in' - the sort with lots of layers and prima flowers and lace etc. I struggled then, but I like to think I have found my style now.

Heavily embellished and altered layouts, especially with one photo surrounded by embellishment clusters. My personal style is very clean, minimalist, linear, and symmetrical; focusing on multiple photos. When I try and do otherwise, it always looks contrived or half-assed. Some people make it look effortless and natural. Different brains have different styles they naturally gravitate to. Some people love to play with putting down clusters, I love to measure and position just so.

I cannot stamp worth a darn. My stamping always has blurred edges and it's messy. I just don't like it. Probably why I rarely make cards.

Water coloring--- but even more-- getting a smooth blend with distress inks! I have given up on watercolors....I really want to blend distress inks beautifully!

I help my friend make kits. She'll pull a few embellishments out and I will cluster them somewhere and she comes by and adjusts them and they always looks so much better. She says I have a better eye for paper.

Stamping. Of any kind. I never get a clean image, tried the tricks. Ihe placement always looks wonky, and it just never seems to blend in with the look of my layout.

Washi tape. I've never been able to fit that into paper crafting, so I don't bother trying anymore. I have about 15 rolls or so that sit, collecting dust. I only keep them so my friend has more to pick from when she comes over to crop, lol.

Probably many things, designing a page from scratch, stamping, doing techniques. Good thing I'm okay making simple pages and getting my design inspiration from pinterest.

Leaving white space on a layout. I can't do it! It ends up looking like a hole I forgot to embellish.

I really love the way Missy Whidden does these little thread embellishments that look like a tangled tumbleweed with colors that match the background colors. Such a cute accent and on her videos, it looks like such an easy technique. I tried it and mine looks like the aftermath of a tornado rather than a squiggly decorative accent.
I saw a recent Celine Navarro video where she applied a wet paintbrush to the Neocolor crayon and then watercolored the page. I'm going to try that one today ((fingers crossed)).

Come up w/a design for a page. OK, maybe everyone else doesn't do it easily, but I can't do it at all. I scraplift all. the. time. If I don't have someone else's sketch to work from/copy, there ain't no page comin'. Layers. Forget it. Haven't tried watercolors or Copics. I can just envision the struggle, the crumpling up of the paper & the launching of it across the room. I don't do well w/clusters either, but I'm getting better. I think. And mixing patterns. Big, small, striped, dots, floral . . . . freaks me out. Again - if I'm not copying someone else's idea exactly (and using papers from a kit/pad so they all coordinate), it ain't happenin'.
